This chapter demonstrates the forms of ziy¡rah of our master Imam `Al¢ ibn M£s¡ al-Ri¤¡, the chief of both men and jinn, the buried in the strange land, and the piece of the flesh of the chief of creatures (i.e. the Holy Prophet). May Allah’s blessings be upon his fathers and sons the leaders to true guidance.
The merits and great rewards that are gained due to visiting the holy tomb of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) are too many to be counted. However, we seek blessings from mentioning several traditions, most of which are quoted from the book of Tu¦fat al-Z¡'ir.
First Tradition: The Holy Prophet (¥) is reported to have said, “A piece of my flesh will be buried in Khur¡s¡n. Any faithful believer visits him will win Paradise as reward recorded obligatorily by Almighty Allah and will have Hellfire prohibited by Him from consuming his body.”
According to another validly reported tradition, the Holy Prophet (¥) has said, “A piece of my flesh will be buried in Khur¡s¡n. Any agonized person visits him, will have his agonies relieved by Almighty Allah and any sinful person visits him, will have his sins forgiven by Almighty Allah.”
Second Tradition: According to a valid chain of authority, Imam M£s¡ ibn Ja`far (al-K¡¨im), peace and Allah’s blessings be upon him, is reported to have said, “Whoever visits the tomb of my son `Al¢, shall be awarded by Almighty Allah the reward of seventy times of performing admissible ¦ajj.”
The reporter said in astonishment, “Do you really mean the reward of seventy times of performing admissible ¦ajj?”
The Imam (`a) said, “Yes, even seventy thousand times of performing ¦ajj.”
The Imam (`a) added, “Some performances of ¦ajj may be inadmissible; therefore, whoever visits him or spends a night next to him, will be regarded as having visited Almighty Allah in His Throne.”
The reporter said in astonishment, “Is it really regarded as visiting Almighty Allah in His Throne!”
The Imam answered, “Yes, it is. When the Resurrection Day comes, four persons from the past generations and four others from the last generations shall surround the Throne of Almighty Allah. Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus are the four persons from the past generations. Mu¦ammad, `Al¢, al-°asan, and al-°usayn are the four persons from the last generations. Then, a rope will be extended and the visitors of the tombs of the Imams will be allowed to sit with us. The highest of rank and the most welcomed of them will be the visitors of the tomb of my son `Al¢.”
Third Tradition: Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) is reported to have said, “In Khur¡s¡n, there is an area, which will soon be frequently visited by the angels; a group is descending and another is ascending until the Trumpet will be blown (to declare the coming of the Resurrection Day).”
“Son of Allah’s Messenger,” the Imam (`a) was asked, “What is this area?”
He answered, “It is in the land of ±£s. By Allah (I swear), it is one of the gardens of Paradise. Whoever visits me therein, will be as if he has visited the Messenger of Allah (¥). For that visit too, Almighty Allah will record the reward of one thousand times of going on admissible ¦ajj and one thousand times of going on admissible `umrah; and my fathers and I will be his intercessors on the Resurrection Day.”
Fourth Tradition: According to authentic chain of authority, Ibn Ab¢-Na¥r has reported that he himself read the following letter of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a): “Pass on the following information to my Sh¢`ah (i.e. adherents): Almighty Allah regards one visitation to me as equal in reward to one thousand times of ¦ajj.”
When I reported this tradition to Imam Mu¦ammad al-Taq¢, Allah’s blessings be upon him, he commented, “Yes, it is. I swear it by Allah. It is even equal in reward to one million times of ¦ajj for those who visit him, recognizing his actual standing.”
Fifth Tradition: Through two valid chains of authority, Imam al-Ri¤¡, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said, “If one visits me despite farness of my place, I will come to him on three occasions of the Resurrection Day so as to save him from the horrors of these occasions: (1) When the records of deeds are thrown right and left, (2) When the Discriminating Bridge (¯ir¡§) is crossed, and (3) when the scale of deeds is set up.”
Sixth Tradition: According to another validly reporter tradition, Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) is reported to have said, “I will be killed wrongfully by poison and I will be entombed beside H¡r£n the `Abb¡sid ruler. Almighty Allah shall then make the soil of my tomb frequently visited by my adherents (i.e. Sh¢`ah). Hence, whoever visits me in my strange land, it will be incumbent on me to pay him a visit on the Resurrection Day. I swear by Him Who honored Mu¦ammad with prophethood and chose him over all the creatures, any one of you who offers a two-unit prayer near my tomb shall be worthy of receiving forgiveness of Almighty Allah on the day when he will meet Him. I swear by Him Who honored us after Mu¦ammad with Imamate and gave us succession (of Prophethood) in particular, the visitors of my tomb shall be the most honored delegations of Almighty Allah on the Resurrection Day. Any faithful believer whose face is touched by a drop of the sky (on his way to visit us), Almighty Allah shall forbid Hellfire to consume his body.”
Seventh Tradition: Through a valid chain of authority, Mu¦ammad ibn Sulaym¡n has reported that he asked Imam Mu¦ammad al-Taq¢ (`a) about a man who went to perform his obligatory ¦ajj and then went to perform ‘umrah, and Almighty Allah granted him success to perform both ¦ajj and `umrah together. Then he went to al-Mad¢nah and greeted the Holy Prophet. He then went to visit your forefather the Commander of the Faithful, recognizing that he is rightfully the Argument of Allah against His creatures and His door from which the Almighty must be approached. So, he greeted him. Then he went to visit Imam al-°usayn and greeted him. Then he went to Baghdad and greeted Imam M£s¡ al-K¡¨im. Then he went back to his hometown. If once again Almighty Allah grants him opportunity to go on ¦ajj; to whom will it be better for him to go under these conditions? Should he who has already performed ¦ajj go on pilgrimage to the Holy Ka`bah, or should he turn towards Khur¡s¡n to greet and visit the shrine of your father `Al¢ ibn M£s¡ al-Ri¤¡?”
The Imam (`a) replied, “It is better for him to go towards Khur¡s¡n to greet my father. This visit will be even much better if it is done in the month of Rajab. However, it is not appropriate to do this now, because the ruling authorities have had bad idea about us.”
Eighth Tradition: Shaykh al-¯ad£q, in his book of man-l¡-ya¦¤uruhul-faq¢h, has reported Imam Mu¦ammad al-Taq¢ (`a) as saying, “Between the two mountains of ±£s, there is an area brought from Paradise. Hence, whoever enters that area will be secured against Hellfire on the Resurrection Day.”
Ninth Tradition: Imam Mu¦ammad al-Taq¢ (`a) is also reported to have said, “I will guarantee Paradise on behalf of Almighty Allah for those who visit my father in ±£s.”
Tenth Tradition: Shaykh al-¯ad£q, in his book of `Uy£n Akhb¡r al-Ri¤¡, has reported the following:
A righteous man saw the Holy Prophet (¥) in his dream, “O Allah’s Messenger,” the man asked, “Which of your offspring should I go to visit?”
The Holy Prophet (¥) answered, “Some of them have come to me poisoned. Others have come slain.”
“Then,” the man asked, “Given the great distances between their shrines, which one of them do you recommend me to go and visit?”
The Holy Prophet (¥) said, “You may visit the one closest to you, who is buried in the land of loneliness.”
“O Allah’s Messenger,” the man asked, “Do you mean al-Ri¤¡?”
The Holy Prophet (¥) instructed, “You should have added (after mentioning his name): Allah’s blessings be upon him! Allah’s blessings be upon him! Allah’s blessings be upon him! (three times)”
In the books of Was¡'il al-Sh¢`ah and al-Mustadrak `al¡ Was¡'il al-Sh¢`ah, chapters have been dedicated to the recommendation of seeking blessings from the shrine of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) as well as the shrines of the other Holy Imams (`a), the recommendation of preceding pilgrimage to Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) to pilgrimage to Imam al-°usayn (`a) as well as all the other Holy Imams (`a) and preceding it even to the supererogatory ¦ajj and `umrah.
Because this book is too brief to cope with lengthiness, I will mention no more than the aforementioned ten traditions.
Several forms of ziy¡rah of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) have been mentioned. However, the most famous form has been mentioned in the most reliable books and reported from the sublime Shaykh Mu¦ammad ibn al-°asan ibn al-Wal¢d, one of the mentors of Shaykh al-¯ad£q. From the book of al-Maz¡r by Ibn Qawlawayh, we can conclude that this form of ziy¡rah has been reported from the Holy Imams. This form of ziy¡rah, according to Shaykh al-¯ad£q’s book of man-l¡-ya¦¤uruhul-faq¢h, is as follows:
When you intend to visit Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) in ±£s, you may bathe yourself before you leave your house (at your hometown) and say the following words:
اَللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْنِي وَطَهِّرْ قَلْبِي |
all¡humma §ahhirn¢ wa §ahhir qalb¢ |
O Allah, (please) cleanse me, cleanse my heart, |
washra¦ l¢ ¥adr¢ |
expand my breast, |
wa ajri `al¡ lis¡n¢ mid¦atika walththan¡'a `alayka |
and let Your praise and eulogy flow out from my tongue; |
fa'innah£ l¡ ¦awla wa l¡ quwwata ill¡ bika |
since indeed there is neither might nor power except with You. |
all¡humma ij`alhu l¢ §ah£ran wa shif¡'an |
O Allah, (please) establish it as a means of cleansing and healing for me. |
Say the following supplicatory words as you leave your house:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismi all¡hi alrra¦m¡ni alrra¦¢mi |
In the name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
bismi all¡hi wa bill¡hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust), |
wa il¡ all¡hi wa il¡ ibni ras£li all¡hi |
to Allah and towards the son of Allah’s Messenger (I trun my face). |
¦asbiya all¡hu tawakkaltu `al¡ all¡hi |
Allah is Sufficient unto me and on Allah do I rely. |
all¡humma ilayka tawajjahtu wa ilayka qa¥adtu |
O Allah, I have set out to You, directed toward You, |
wa m¡ `indaka aradtu |
and desired for what You have in possession. |
When you go out of your house, you may stop at the door and say the following supplicatory words:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي |
all¡humma ilayka wajjahtu wajh¢ |
O Allah, to You am I turning my face |
wa `alayka khallaftu ahl¢ wa m¡l¢ wa m¡ khawwaltan¢ |
and with You do I keep my family members, my property, and everything with which You have allowed me to behave. |
wa bika wathiqtu fal¡ tukhayyibn¢ |
I have trusted in You; so, do not disappoint me. |
y¡ man l¡ yukhayyibu man ar¡dah£ |
O He Who saves those who trust in Him from disappointment |
wa l¡ yu¤ayyi`u man ¦afi¨ah£ |
and He Who does not give up those whom He safeguards. |
all¡humma ¥alli `al¡ mu¦ammadin wa ¡li mu¦ammadin |
O Allah, (please do) send blessings upon Mu¦ammad and the Household of Mu¦ammad |
wa¦fa¨n¢ bi¦if¨ika |
and guard me under Your custody, |
fa'innah£ l¡ ya¤¢`u man ¦afi¨ta |
since nothing that You guard may be ruined. |
When you arrive there safely, Allah willing, and you intend to visit the Imam (`a), you may bathe yourself and say the following words meanwhile:
اَللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْنِي وَطَهِّرْ لِي قَلْبِي |
all¡humma §ahhirn¢ wa §ahhir l¢ qalb¢ |
O Allah, (please) cleanse me, cleanse my heart for me, |
washra¦ l¢ ¥adr¢ |
expand my breast, |
and let Your praise, eulogy, and love flow out from my tongue; |
fa'innah£ l¡ quwwata ill¡ bika |
since indeed there is no power except with You. |
wa qad `alimtu anna qiw¡ma d¢n¢ |
I know for sure that the basis of my faith |
alttasl¢mu li'amrika walittib¡`u lisunnati nabiyyika |
is to submit to Your decree, to keep to the traditions of Your Prophet, |
walshshah¡datu `al¡ jam¢`i khalqika |
and to bear witness to all Your creatures. |
all¡humma ij`alhu l¢ shif¡'an wa n£ran |
O Allah, (please) make it curative and light for me. |
innaka `al¡ kulli shay'in qad¢run |
You verily have power over all things. |
You may put on the purest and cleanest of your clothes, walk barefooted with tranquility and submission, and mention Almighty Allah in your heart, repeating the following statements:
اللَّهُ اكْبَرُ |
all¡hu akbaru |
Allah is the Most Great. |
l¡ il¡ha ill¡ all¡hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
sub¦¡na all¡hi |
All glory be to Allah. |
al¦amdu lill¡hi |
All praise be to Allah. |
While entering the sacred shrine, you may say the following words:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismi all¡hi wa bill¡hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust), |
wa `al¡ millati ras£li all¡hi |
and the course of Allah’s Messenger (I follow), |
¥all¡ all¡hu `alayhi wa ¡lih¢ |
peace be upon him and his Household. |
ashhadu an l¡ il¡ha ill¡ all¡hu |
I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, |
wa¦dah£ l¡ shar¢ka lah£ |
One and Only God and having no partner. |
wa ashhadu anna mu¦ammadan `abduh£ wa ras£luh£ |
And I bear witness that Mu¦ammad is His servant and Messenger |
wa anna `aliyyan waliyyu all¡hi |
and `Al¢ is Allah’s most intimate servant. |
You may then walk towards the tomb to stop there, face it, and say the following words:
اشْهَدُ انْ لاََ إِِلٰهَ إِِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ |
ashhadu an l¡ il¡ha ill¡ all¡hu |
I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, |
wa¦dah£ l¡ shar¢ka lah£ |
One and Only God and having no partner. |
wa ashhadu anna mu¦ammadan `abduh£ wa ras£luh£ |
And I bear witness that Mu¦ammad is His servant and Messenger, |

You may then raise your right hand towards the sky, stretch out your left hand on the tomb, and say the following supplicatory prayer:

all¡humma inn¢ ataqarrabu ilayka billa`nati `alayhim |
O Allah, I do seek nearness to You through invoking curse on these peoples (i.e. the enemies of the Holy Prophet’s Household) |
walbar¡'ati minhum f¢ aldduny¡ wal-¡khirati y¡ ra¦m¡nu |
and disavowing them in this world and the Hereafter, O All-beneficent Lord. |
You may turn to the side of the Imam’s feet and say the following words:
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابَا ٱلْحَسَنِ |
¥all¡ all¡hu `alayka y¡ ab¡ al¦asani |
Allah’s blessings be upon you, O Abu’l-°asan. |

Allah’s blessings be upon your soul and body. |

qatala all¡hu man qatalaka bil-ayd¢ wal-alsuni |
May Allah kill those who killed you with hands and tongues. |
You may then earnestly invoke the curse of Allah on the slayers of the Commander of the Faithful (Imam `Al¢), the slayers of Imams al-°asan and al-°usayn, and all the slayers of the family members of the Holy Prophet.
You may then return to the side of the Imam’s head and offer a two-unit prayer in which you may recite S£rah Y¡s¢n (No. 36) after S£rah al-F¡ti¦ah in one unit and S£rah al-Ra¦m¡n (No. 55) after S£rah al-F¡ti¦ah in the other.
You may also pray and implore Almighty Allah as earnestly as possible.
You may also pray for yourself, your parents, and your brothers and sisters-in-faith as much as you can.
You may stay at the side of the Imam’s head as long as you wish, offering all your prayers there.
The aforesaid form of ziy¡rah is in fact the most excellent. One of its statements has read:
وَسَخِرُوٱ بِإِِمَامِكَ |
wa sakhir£ bi'im¡mika |
…and scoffed at Your Imam… |
This statement has been quoted from the books of man-l¡-ya¦¤uruhul-faq¢h, `Uy£n Akhb¡r al-Ri¤¡, and the books of `All¡mah al-Majlis¢.
The statement involved thus means that these persons mocked at the Imam whom You have appointed for them.
However, according to the book of Mi¥b¡¦ al-Z¡'ir, the statement is mentioned in this form:
وَسَخِرُوٱ بِايَّامِكَ |
wa sakhir£ bi'ayy¡mika |
…and scoffed at Your Days… |
This meaning is also accurate and may be more accurate than the earlier from various aspects.
The Days are the Holy Imams, peace be upon them, according to the report of ¯aqr ibn Ab¢-Dalaf, which has been previously cited in the book (pp. 184, Vol. 1).
It is worth mentioning that invocation of Almighty Allah’s curse on the enemies of the Holy Imams can be said in any language or form. However, the most appropriate form may be the following, which is quoted from some validly reported supplications:
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱلْعَنْ قَتَلَةَ امِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ |
all¡humma il`an qatalata am¢ri almu'min¢na |
O Allah, pour curses on the slayers of the Commander of the Faithful, |
wa qatalata al¦asani wal¦usayni `alayhimu alssal¡mu |
the slayers of al-°asan and al-°usayn, peace be upon them, |
wa qatalata ahli bayti nabiyyika |
and the slayers of the members of Your Prophet’s Household. |
all¡humma il`an a`d¡'a ¡li mu¦ammadin wa qatalatahum |
O Allah, curse the enemies and slayers of Mu¦ammad’s family members, |
wa zid-hum `adh¡ban fawqa al`adh¡bi |
add up chastisement to the chastisement that You decide for them, |
wa haw¡nan fawqa haw¡nin |
add up humility to the humility that You decide for them, |
wa dhullan fawqa dhullin |
add up disgrace to the disgrace that You decide for them, |
wa khizyan fawqa khizyin |
and add up ignominy to the ignominy that You decide for them. |
all¡humma du``hum il¡ alnn¡ri da``an |
O Allah, thrust them into Hellfire with disdainful thrusting, |
wa arkishum f¢ al¢mi `adh¡bika raksan |
cast them down in the painful torment of You with violent casting, |
wa¦shurhm wa atb¡`ahum il¡ jahannama zumaran |
and drive them and their followers to Hell in groups. |
In the book of Tu¦fat al-Z¡'ir, Shaykh al-Muf¢d states that it is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer after accomplishing the prayer of visiting Imam al-Ri¤¡’s tomb:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِِنِّي اسْالُكَ يَا اللَّهُ |

In his book of Bi¦¡r al-Anw¡r, `All¡mah al-Majlis¢ has quoted another form of ziy¡rah of Imam al-Ri¤¡ ('a), known as al-Ziy¡rah al-Jaw¡diyyah, from books of some ancient authors.
After mentioning this form of ziy¡rah, `All¡mah al-Majlis¢ said: You may now offer the two-unit prayer of ziy¡rah, say statements of glorification of Almighty Allah, and dedicate these as present to Imam al-Ri¤¡, peace be upon him. You may then say the following supplication:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِِنِّي اسْالُكَ يَا اللَّهُ |

O Allah, I beseech You, O Allah |
aldd¡'imu f¢ mulkih¢… |
Who is permanent in His kingdom… |
Hence, he cited the aforesaid supplicatory prayer wholly.
Whenever one visits Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) with this form of ziy¡rah (i.e. al-Ziy¡rah al-Jaw¡diyyah), it is highly advised not to miss saying this supplicatory prayer after it.
Ibn Qawlawayh reported one of the Holy Imams (`a) to have said: When you reach the tomb of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a), you may say the following supplicatory words there:
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَىٰ |

In his book of al-Muqni`ah, Shaykh al-Muf¢d, reporting this form of ziy¡rah, has said:
After performing the ritual bathing of ziy¡rah and putting on the purest of your clothes, you may stop at the tomb of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) and say the following words:

يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ |
yabna ras£li all¡hi |
O son of Allah’s Messenger. |
wa ra¦matu all¡hi wa barak¡tuh£ |
Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you. |
ashhadu annaka al-im¡mu alh¡d¢ |
I bear witness that you are verily the guiding leader |
walwaliyyu almurshidu |
and the directing saint. |
abra'u il¡ all¡hi min a`d¡'ika |
I repudiate your enemies in the presence of Allah |
wa ataqarrabu il¡ all¡hi biwil¡yatika |
and seek nearness to Allah through declaring loyalty to you. |
¥all¡ all¡hu `alayka |
May Allah bless you. |
wa ra¦matu all¡hi wa barak¡tuh£ |
Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you. |
You may then offer the two-unit prayer of ziy¡rah after which you may offer any prayers you wish.
You may then turn to the side of the Imam’s foot and pray Almighty Allah for anything you want.
A great reward is gained when Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) is visited at the hours and on the occasions that are related to him, especially in the month of Rajab, on the twenty-third and twenty-fifth of Dhu’l-Qa`dah, and on the sixth of Rama¤¡n, as well as other days that are related to Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a), as has been previously detailed within the acts on these days mentioned in the previous section of this book.
When you intend to leave and bid farewell to the Imam, you may say the same form, which has been cited for bidding farewell to the Holy Prophet (¥). This form is as follows:
لاَ جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ آخِرَ تَسْلِيمِي عَلَيْكَ |
l¡ ja`alah£ all¡hu ¡khira tasl¢m¢ `alayka |
Allah may not decide this compliment of me to be the last. |
You may then add the following words:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ |
alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ waliyya all¡hi wa ra¦matu all¡hi wa barak¡tuh£ |
Peace and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you, O Allah’s authority. |
all¡humma l¡ taj`alhu ¡khira al`ahdi |
O Allah, (please) do not decide this visit |

and excellent the companionship of these is. |

I entrust you with Allah, ask Him to keep you under His custody, |

and invoke His blessings upon you. |

and in whatever you have come with and instructed. |
faktubn¡ ma`a alshsh¡hid¢na |
So, (please) write us down with those who bear witness. |
In this respect, it seems appropriate to mention a few matters, as follows:
First: According to an acceptable chain of authority, Imam `Al¢ al-Naq¢ (al-H¡d¢) is reported to have said, “Whoever has an urgent need to be granted by Almighty Allah, may visit the tomb of my grandfather al-Ri¤¡ in ±£s and, after bathing himself, offer a two-unit prayer at the side of his head and mention his need in the supplication (qun£t) of the prayer. Doing so, his need will be granted unless it results in an act of disobedience to Him or a rupture of relations with the relatives. Verily, the place of his tomb is an area of Paradise. Any faithful believer who visits him will be saved from Hellfire and allowed to enter Paradise by Almighty Allah.”
Second: `All¡mah al-Majlis¢ has reported the following from a statement handwritten by the sublime Shaykh °usayn ibn `Abd al-¯amad the father of Shaykh al-Bah¡'¢:
Shaykh Abu’l-±ayyib °usayn ibn A¦mad al-R¡z¢, the jurisprudent, has mentioned that whoever visits Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) or any other Imam and performs there the famous prayer known as ¯al¡t Ja`far, will have the reward of one who has gone on ritual ¦ajj for thousand times, gone on ritual `umrah for one thousand times, manumitted one thousand slaves for the sake of Allah, and participated in a holy war with a missioned Prophet one thousand times for each unit of prayer he performs. For each step that he makes, he will be granted the reward of one hundred times of going on ritual ¦ajj and one hundred times of going on ritual `umrah; and he will also gain the rewards of doing one hundred good deeds and one hundred punishable sins of him will be erased.
The method of ¯al¡t Ja`far has been previously cited in this book within the recommended acts on Fridays (pp. 160 of Vol. 1).
Third: Mu¦awwil al-Sajist¡n¢ is reported to have narrated the following:
When the official message of summoning Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) to be present in Khur¡s¡n (to hold the new office of crown princeship) was received (by the governor of al-Mad¢nah), Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) entered the Prophet’s Mosque to bid farewell to the Holy Prophet (¥). He repeated this act many times at each of which he would return to the Holy Prophet’s tomb and raise his voice with weeping and wailing. At one of these times, I approached, greeted, and congratulated him for the new office. The Imam (`a) greeted me back and said, “Visit me, for I will leave the vicinity of my grandfather, I will die in a strange land, and I will be buried next to H¡r£n (the `Abb¡sid ruler).”
Shaykh Y£suf ibn °¡tam al-Sh¡m¢, in his book of al-Durr al-Na¨¢m, reported the following, on the authority of a group of companions, from Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a):
“After I had prepared myself to leave al-Mad¢nah towards Khur¡s¡n, I gathered all my dependants and ordered them to weep for me in my presence so that I would hear them. I then distributed twelve thousand dinars among them and said, “I will never come back to my dependants.” I then took Ab£-Ja`far al-Jaw¡d to the mosque, put his hand on the edge of the Holy Prophet’s tomb, asked him to stick himself to the tomb, and prayed Allah to make Allah’s Messenger guard him. I then ordered all my deputies and retinue to listen to and obey him and warned them against disobeying him, because he would be my representative among them.”
Sayyid `Abd al-Kar¢m ibn ±¡w£s has reported that when al-Ma'm£n (the `Abb¡sid ruler) ordered that Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) should leave al-Mad¢nah towards Khur¡s¡n, the Imam took the way that led to al-Ba¥rah, not al-K£fah. From al-Ba¥rah, the Imam headed towards Baghdad from the way of al-K£fah. From Baghdad, the Imam headed towards the city of Qumm. When he entered this city, its people received him warmly and each one of them wanted the Imam to be his guest. However, the Imam referred the matter to his camel, saying, “My camel has been already ordered.” Hence, the camel headed for a certain house and sat at its door. The owner of this house had seen in dream that Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) would be his guest the next day.
Soon after that, this house became one of the high esteemed places. It has now become a renowned school.
Shaykh al-¯ad£q has reported the following story from Is¦¡q ibn R¡hawayh:
When Abu’l-°asan al-Ri¤¡ (`a) entered the city of Naysh¡b£r and then intended to leave it, the scholars of ¦ad¢th of that city gathered around him and asked, “Will you leave us before you deliver to us a tradition (¦ad¢th) from which we may benefit?” Hence, the Imam, who was in a howdah, took his head out of the howdah and said:
سَمِعْتُ ابِي مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ يَقُولُ: |
I heard my father M£s¡ ibn Ja`far saying: |
I heard my father Ja`far ibn Mu¦ammad saying: |
I heard my father Mu¦ammad ibn `Al¢ saying: |
I heard my father `Al¢ ibn al-°usayn saying: |
I heard my father al-°usayn ibn `Al¢ saying: |
I heard my father the Commander of the Faithful `Al¢ ibn Ab¢-±¡lib saying: |
I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: |
I heard (Archangel) Gabriel saying: |
I heard Allah the Almighty and All-majestic saying: |
There is no god save Allah; this is My fortress. Hence, whoever enters My fortress will be saved from My chastisement. |
When the caravan moved for a few steps, the Imam (`a) shouted at us:
بِشُرُوطِهَا؛ وَانَا مِنْ شُرُوطِهَا. |
This is contingent upon its conditions; and I am one of these conditions. |
Abu’l-¯alt has reported that when Imam al-Ri¤¡, on his way to meet al-Ma'm£n, passed by the Red Village, some of the companions said to him, “O Son of Allah’s Messenger! It is midday. Shall we perform the prayer?” So, the Imam rode off and asked for some water to do the ritual ablution. When he was informed that they did not have any water with them, the Imam scratched the ground with his hand and a quantity of water, which was enough for him and his companions to do the ritual ablution with, gushed out from there. The trace of this water is still existent up to the present day.
When the Imam entered the city of San¡bad, he reclined to the mountain from which pots were made and prayed, “O Allah! Grant them benefits from this mountain and bless whatever is hewed from it.”
The Imam then ordered them to make some pots from the rocks of that mountain for him. He then said, “You may eat no food except that which is cooked in these pots.” Since that day, people were attracted to this profession and the blessings of the Imam’s prayer have been noticed.
Kings Visiting Imam al-Ri¤¡’s Holy Shrine
Fourth: The author of Ma§la` al-Shams (a book of history) has mentioned that Shah `Abb¡s I (AD 1588–1629) resided in Mashhad on the twenty-fifth of Dhu’l-°ijjah, AH 1006 after `Abd al-Ra¦m¡n the Uzbek had robbed the holy shrine of Imam al-Ri¤¡, leaving nothing except the golden fence. On the twenty-eighth of the same month, Shah `Abb¡s I headed towards the city of Har¡t and brought back all the robbed things and arranged the affairs in that city. When he came back to Mashhad, he resided for a whole month during which he reconstructed the yard of Imam al-Ri¤¡’s holy shrine, conferred upon the custodians of that holy place generously, and endued them with his kindness. When he returned to Iraq, he visited Khur¡s¡n again in AH 1008 and spent the entire winter there. During this period, he had the honor of serving the holy shrine by himself.
Fulfilling the vow that he had made, Shah `Abb¡s I, in AH 1009, traveled to the holy shrine of Imam al-Ri¤¡ walking. He covered this long distance in twenty-eight days. When he arrived in Khur¡s¡n, he ordered to enlarge the yard of the holy shrine. At that time, the entrance to the holy shrine was from the hall known as `Al¢ Sh¢r’s Hall, which was an untidy hall to the end of one side of the holy shrine. Shah `Abb¡s I thus ordered the yard to be reconstructed in a way making this hall lie in its center. He then built another hall in the opposite side. He also built a central way that passed through the two gates of the yard and the hall and enrolled the city from its western gate to the eastern. He also dug out many springs and channels in the city. In the middle of this public central street, he dug a rivulet flowing to a big pond that he made in the center of the yard of the holy shrine to penetrate it towards the eastern side of the street.
The inscriptions found on these buildings were carved by M¢rz¡ Mu¦ammad Ri¤¡ ¯adr al-Kutt¡b, `Al¢ Ri¤¡ al-`Abb¡s¢, and Mu¦ammad Ri¤¡ al-Im¡m¢.
Shah `Abb¡s I also gilded the blessed dome, as is known from the inscription carved on this dome and reading the following: “In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. This is one of the greatest successful matters that Allah the All-glorified has granted to the greatest Sultan, the lord of the Iranians, the owner of the Prophetic immaculate lineage and the `Al¢d dazzling pedigree, who seeks blessings from the dust of the feet of the custodians of this Divinely purified shrine and the visitors of this Paradisiacal, shining garden, and who propagates the traditions of his infallible forefathers, the Safavid Sultan and the son of the Sultan, Abu’l-Mu¨affar Shah `Abb¡s al-°usayn¢ al-M£saw¢ Bah¡dir Kh¡n who had the pleasure to walk on feet from the sultanate house in I¥fah¡n to visit this most honorable sanctuary. He had the honor of gilding this dome from his purest money in AH 1010. This was finished in AH 1016.”
In his book of I`l¡m al-War¡ bi-A`l¡m al-Hud¡, al-±abris¢, after mentioning some miracles of Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a), states the following:
“The miraculous blessings of Imam al-Ri¤¡’s holy shrine that were shown to people after his demise, as well as the signs and marvelous matters that the creatures saw in that place and to which the general and the elite people submitted and of which the dissidents and the adherents (of him) confessed up to this day are too many to be counted. In that holy shrine, blind and leprous people were cured, prayers were responded, requests were granted, and intricate matters were relieved. We have certainly seen many examples of these miracles without doubt.”
In his book of Ithb¡t al-Hud¡t, the sublime Shaykh al-°urr al-`ªmil¢, after quoting the aforesaid statement of al-±abris¢, says the following:
“The author of this book, Mu¦ammad ibn al-°asan al-°urr, says: I myself have seen many of such miracles as Shaykh al-±abris¢ did and I have been certain of them as Shaykh al-±abris¢ was. That was during my neighborhood of the holy shrine for twenty-six years. I have also heard about such miracles in such a certain way that it exceeds the uninterruptability of the chains of authority. I cannot remember that I would not be granted any request that I prayed for in this holy shrine. All praise be to Allah for so. However, because details of this topic are too lengthy to be mentioned in this book, I am resorting to mentioning a summary of it.”
Shaykh `Abb¡s al-Qumm¢, the author of this book, says: We do not need to mention the miraculous things that were shown from this sacred Paradisiacal place in the past and that have been taking place in every age. In Section Two of this book, within the recommended rites at the twenty-seventh night of Rajab, I have cited a discussion related to this topic.
Let us close up this chapter with mentioning a couple of poetic verses composed by al-J¡m¢, praising Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a):
Peace be upon the family of ±¡h¡ and Y¡s¢n.
Peace be upon the family of the Prophets.
Peace be upon a garden in which resided,
an Imam about whom kingship and religion are boasted.
It is highly advisable to visit the Holy Shrine of Imam al-Riza (a.s) in Rajab, since it enjoys a special rank in this month:
Whenever you intend to visit Imam al-Riza (a.s) in ±us, then perform the ritual bath before you leave your house (at your hometown) and say the following while you are performing the ritual bath:
اَللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْنِي وَطَهِّرْ قَلْبِي |
allahumma tahhirne wa-tahhir qalbe |
O God! Please cleanse me, and cleanse my heart! |
wa’shrah le sadre |
(Please) ‘expand my breast’, |
wa’ajri ‘ala lisane midhatika wa-ththana’i ‘alayka |
and let Thy praise and eulogy flow out from my tongue |
since indeed there is no power but in Thee. |
allahumma-j’alhu le tahuran wa-shifa’a(n) |
O God! Please establish it as a means of cleansing and treatment for me. |
Say the following as you leave your house:
بِسْم اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |
bismil-lahir-rahmanir-rahem. |
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. |
bismillahi wa-billahi |
In the name of God. By God, |
wa-ilal-lahi wa-ilabni rasulil-lahi |
I turn to God and towards the son of God’s Prophet. |
hasbiyal-lahu tawakkaltu ‘alal-lahi |
God suffices me, and I rely on God. |
allahumma ilayka tawajjahtu wa-ilayka qasadtu |
O God! I have set out to Thee. And I have directed toward You, |
wa-ma ‘indaka aradtu. |
And I have decided (to get) what is near Thee. |
When you go out stop at the door of your house and say:
اللّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي، |
allahumma ilayka wajjahtu wajhe |
O God! I have turned my face towards Thee. |
wa’alayka khallaftu ahle wa-male wa-walade wa-ma khawwaltane |
And I have left behind my family, wealth and whatever Thee have granted me. |
wa-bika wathiqtu fala tukhayyibne ya man la yukhayyabu man aradahu |
I have trusted Thee. Then (please) do not turn me into a loser, O the One who would not make a loser anyone whom Thee wish, |
wa-la yuzayya’u man hafizhahu |
and will not ruin whatever he possesses. |
salli ‘ala muhammadin wa-ali muhammadin |
Blessings be upon Muhammad and Muhammad’s Household. |
wa-hfazhne bi-hifzhika |
And (please) guard me under Thy custody |
fa-innahu la yaze`u man hafizht(a). |
since nothing that Thee guard gets ruined. |
Then whenever you want to go to visit, perform the ritual bathing and while you are bathing say:
اللّهُمَّ طَهِّرْنِي، |
allahumma tahhirne |
O God! Please cleanse me, |
wa-tahhir qalbe |
and cleanse my heart! |
wa’shrah le sadre |
(Please) ‘expand my breast’; |
wa-ajri ‘ala lisane mid-hatika wa-mahabbatika wa’th-thana`i ‘alayka |
and let Thy praise, love and eulogy flow out from my tongue |
fa-innahu la quwwata illa bika |
since indeed there is no power but in Thee. |
wa-qad ‘alimtu anna qiwama dene al-taslemu li-amrika |
I have indeed realized that the strength of my religion depends upon my submission to Thy decrees, |
walit-tiba’u li-sunnati nabiyyika |
and the following of Thy Prophet’s traditions, |
wash-shahadatu ‘ala jame’i khalqika |
and bearing witness (to this) for all Thy creatures. |
allahumma-j’alhu le shifa`an wa-nuran |
O God! Please establish it as a means of healing for me, and as a light, |
innaka ‘ala kulli shay’in qader. |
since Thee are capable of all things. |
Then put on your cleanest clothes.
Walk with bare feet, with calmness, dignity, exaltation, acclamation and glorification of God; that is, you may repeat the following statements:
اللّهُ أَكْبَرُ، |
allahu akbaru |
Allah is the Most Great |
la ilaha illallahu |
There is no god save Allah |
subhanallahi |
All glory be to Allah |
alhamdu lillahi |
All praise be to Allah |
Take short steps and while you are entering (the holy shrine) say:
بِسْم اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |
bismillahir-rahmanir-rahem |
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. |
bismil-lahi wa-billahi |
In the name of God and by God |
wa-‘ala millati rasulil-lahi sallal-lahu ‘alayhi wa-alih. |
and to the nation of God’s Prophet: God’s blessings be upon him and his Household. |
ash-hadu an-la ilaha wahdahu la shareka lahu |
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. He is One and He has no partners. |
wa-ash-hadu anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa-rasuluhu |
And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger. |
wa-anna ‘aliyyan waliyyu’l-lah. |
And I bear witness that Ali is God’s friend. |
Then walk until you stop at his tomb. Then face him by turning your back towards the Qibla (prayer direction) and say:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلهَ إِلاَّ اللّهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، |
ash-hadu an la ilaha illal-lahu wahdahu la shareka lahu |
I bear witness that there is no god but God, the One; and there are no partners for Him. |
wa-ash-hadu anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa-rasuluhu |
I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger. |
wa-annahu sayyidu’l-awwalena wa’l-akhirena |
Verily, he is the Master of all those of old and those of later times. |
wa-annahu sayyidu’l-anbiya`i wa’l-mursalen. |
Verily, he is the Master of the Prophets and the Messengers. |
allahumma salli ‘ala muhammadin |
O God! God’s Blessings be upon Muhammad |
‘abdika wa-rasulika |
Thy Servant; Thy Messenger, |
wa-nabiyyika wa-sayyidi khalqika ajma’ena |
Thy Prophet and the Master of all Thy creatures |
salatan la yaqwa ‘ala ihsa`iha ghayruka. |
blessings that no one but Thee can measure. |
allahumma salli ‘ala ameri’l-mu`minena |
O God! God’s blessings be upon the Commander of the Faithful |
‘aliyyi-bni abe talibin |
`Ale ibn Abe-±alib, |

allahumma ilayka samadtu min arze |
O God! I set out towards Thee from my homeland, |

|
|
|
|
|
Then you raise your right hand up and extend your left hand towards the tomb and say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ بِحُبِّهِمْ وَبِوِلايَتِهِمْ، |
allahumma inne ataqarrabu ilayka bi-hubbihim wa-biwilayatihim, |
O God! I seek Thy nearness through my love and friendship for them. |
atawalla akhirahum bima tawallaytu bihe awwalahum |
I love the last one of them as much as I love the first one, |
wa-abra`u min kulli walejatin dunahum. |
and avoid any intimate friendship with anyone but them. |
allahummal-‘anil-ladhena baddalu ni’mataka |
My God! (Please) curse those who altered Thy blessings, |

wa-sakhiru bi-imamika |
mocked Thy appointed leader, |
wa-hamalun-nasa ‘ala aktafi ali muhammad. |
and placed the burden of the people upon the shoulders of the members of the Household of Muhammad (a.s). |
allahumma inne ataqarrabu ilayka bil-la’nati ‘alayhim wal-bara`ati minhum fid-dunya wal-akhirati ya rahman. |
O God! I seek Thy nearness by cursing them (your enemies), and by staying away from them in this world and in the Hereafter, O the Beneficent! |
Then you turn towards the position of his feet and say:
صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ، |

صَبَرْتَ وَأَنْتَ الصَّادِقُ المُصَدَّقُ، |
sabarta wa-antas-sadiqul-musaddaqu |
You persevered. You were truthful and your truthfulness has been confirmed. |
qatalal-lahu man qatalaka bil-ayde wal-alsun. |
May God curse whoever martyred you with his hands and tongue. |
Then supplicate and curse the murderer of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s) and the murderers of al-Hasan (a.s), al-Husayn (a.s) and all those who murdered the members of the Household of the God’s Messenger (a.s). Then turn towards the position of his head from behind his back and offer two units of prayers. Recite the chapters al-Fatihah (No. 1) and Yasen (No. 36) in the first unit, and recite the chapters al-Fatihah and al-Rahman(No. 55) in the second unit. But if you have not memorized them recite the chapter al-Tawhed (No. 112) in both units. And pray for the believing men and women, and especially pray for your parents. Also make an effort to say supplications, cry, and pray a lot for yourself, your parents and all your brethren. And stay near the position of his head as much as you wish. And you must say your prayers at the tomb.
