Evil repelling Duas
Baqiyatus Salehaat

Chapter nine
Evil-repelling prayers and supplicatory amulets
First: It is reported that when a man complained to Imam al-Sadiq (`a) about loneliness, the Imam (`a) said: May I lead you to a prayer that if you say, you will not feel lonely neither at nights nor in daytimes? It is this prayer:
bismillahi wa billahi
In the Name of Allah, in Allah (I trust),

wa tawakkaltu `ala allahi
and on Allah do I rely.

innahu man yatawakkal `ala allahi fahuwa hasbuhu
Verily, whoever trusts in Allah, He is sufficient for him.

inna allaha balighu amrihi
Surely, Allah attains His purpose.

qad ja`ala allahu likulli shay'in qadran
Allah indeed has appointed a measure for everything.

allahumma ij`alni fi kanafika wa fi jiwarika
O Allah, (please) put me under Your shade and in Your vicinity

waj`alni fi amanika wa fi man`ika
and put me under Your security and in Your shield.

Second: It is reported that whoever spends a night alone in a house or in a room, should recite Ayah al-Kursi and say this supplicatory prayer:
allahumma anis wahshati
O Allah, (please) entertain my loneliness,

wa amin raw`ati
secure my dread,

wa a`inni `ala wahdati
and help me against my being alone.

Third: The Holy Prophet (s) is reported to have used these words as evil-repelling prayer (`udhah) for Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husayn (`a):
u`idhukuma bikalimati allahi alttammati
I pray for Your protection the perfect Words of Allah

wa asma'ihi alhusna kulliha `ammatan
and all of His excellent names totally

min sharri alssammati walhammati
against the evil of poisonous things and the pestles,

wa min sharri kulli `aynin lammatin
against the evil of all evil eyes,

wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada
and against the evil of the envious when he envies.

Commenting, the Holy Prophet (s) added, “Thus did (Prophet) Abraham use to repel evil from Ishmael and Isaac.”
Fourth: The companions of the Holy Prophet (s) are reported, in one of the military expeditions, to have complained to him about fleas that annoyed them. Instructing them, the Holy Prophet (s) said: When you go to sleep, you may say this supplicatory prayer:
ayyuha al-aswadu alwaththabu
O black, leaping fleas

alladhi la yubali ghalaqan wa la baban
that care for neither a lock nor a door,

`azamtu `alayka bi'ummi alkitabi
I adjure you in the name of the Mother of the Book

an la tu'dhiyani wa ashabi
not to annoy my companions and me

ila an yadhhaba allaylu
until night terminates

wa yaji'a alssubhu bima ja'a
and morning comes carrying what it carries.

Fifth: Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu'minin (`a) is reported to have said: When you see a beast, you should say this:
a`udhu birabbi danyala waljubbi
I pray the protection of the Lord of Daniel and the well (in which Daniel was thrown with beasts)

min kulli asadin musta'sidin
against all strong, ravenous lions.

Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is reported to have said: When you face a beast, you should recite in its face ªyah al-Kursi and these words:
`azamtu `alayka bi`azimati allahi
I adjure you by the adjuration of Allah,

wa `azimati muhammadin salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi
the adjuration of Muhammad, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household,

wa `azimati sulaymana ibni dawuda
the adjuration of Solomon the son of David,

wa `azimati amiri almu'minina `aliyyi ibni abi talibin `alayhi alssalamu
the adjuration of the Commander of the Faithful `Ali the son of Abi-Talib, peace be upon him,

wal-a'immati alttahirina `alayhim alssalamu min ba`dihi
and the adjuration of the immaculate Imams after him, peace be upon them.

If you do so, the beast will go away, by the will of Allah the All-exalted.
Sixth: The Holy Prophet (s) is reported to have said to Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu'minin (`a): When you fall in a trouble or an ordeal, you may say the following words. Once you do, Allah the Almighty and All-exalted will ward off from you whatever sort of misfortune He wills:
bismi allahi alrrahmani alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

There is neither might nor power save with Allah the All-high and All-great.

Chapter 5 Each Infalliable dua 1-10 BRIEF SUPPLICATORY AND EVIL-REPELLING PRAYERS
This section comprises a number of brief supplicatory and evil-repelling prayers that are selected from the two books entitled Muhaj al-Da`awat and al-Mujtana compiled by Sayyid Radi al-Din Ibn Tawus.
First: Imam Musa ibn Ja`far (`a) is reported to have quoted the Holy Prophet (s) as instructing Imam `Ali (`a) to say this supplicatory prayer whenever a hardship would bother him:
allahumma inni as'aluka bihaqqi muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
to bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

wa an tunjiyani min hadha alghammi
and to save me from this distress.

Lady Fatimah’s Evil-Repelling Prayer
Second: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Lady Fatimah (`a):
bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

ya hayyu ya qayyumu
O He Who is Ever-living; O He Who is Self-subsisting,

birahmatika astaghithu fa'aghithni
in the name of Your mercy I pray for Your aid; so, (please) come to my aid,

do not leave me with myself even for a winking of an eye,

wa aslih li sha'ni kullahu
and set aright my entire affair.

Imam Zayn al-`ªbidin’s Evil-Repelling Prayer
Third: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam `Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-`ªbidin (`a):
bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

bismillahi wa billahi
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I put my trust).

sadadtu afwaha aljinni wal-insi
I shut the mouths of jinn, human beings,

walshshayatini walssaharati wal-abalisati
devils, sorcerers, demons,

min aljinni wal-insi
both jinn and human beings,

walssalatini wa man yaludhu bihim
rulers, and their protégés

billahi al`azizi al-a`azzi
in the name of Allah the Almighty and Mightiest,

wa billahi alkabiri al-akbari
in the name of Allah the Great and Greatest,

bismillahi alzzahiri albatini
and in the name of Allah that is evident, immanent,

almaknuni almakhzuni
hoarded, and stored,

alladhi aqama bihi alssamawati wal-arda
and by which Allah has established the heavens and the earth

thumma istawa `ala al`arshi
and then prevailed on the Throne.

bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
“In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

wa waqa`a alqawlu `alayhim bima zalamu
And the word shall come to pass against them because they were unjust,

fahum la yantiquna
so they shall not speak.”

qala ikhsa'u fiha wa la tukallimuni
“He shall say: Go away into it and speak not to Me.”

wa `anat alwujuhu lilhayyi alqayyumi
“And the faces shall be humbled before the Living, the Self-subsistent Allah,

wa qad khaba man hamala zulman
and he who bears iniquity is indeed in a failure.”

wa khasha`at al-aswatu lilrrahmani
“And the voices shall be low before the Beneficent Allah

fala tasma`u illa hamsan
so that you shall not hear aught but a soft sound.”

wa ja`alna `ala qulubihim akinnatan an yafqahuhu
“And We have cast veils over their hearts lest they understand it

wa fi adhanihim waqran
and a heaviness into their ears.”

wa idha dhakarta rabbaka fi alqur'ani wahdahu
“And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur'an

wallaw `ala adbarihim nufuran
they turn their backs in aversion.”

wa idha qara'ta alqur'ana
“And when you recite the Qur'an,

We place between you and those who do not believe in the hereafter

hijaban masturan
a hidden barrier.”

wa ja`alna min bayni aydihim saddan
“And We have made before them a barrier

wa min khalfihim saddan
and a barrier behind them,

fa'aghshaynahum fahum la yubsiruna
then We have covered them over so that they do not see.”

alyawma nakhtimu `ala afwahihim
“On that day, We will set a seal upon their mouths,

wa tukallimuna aydihim
and their hands shall speak to Us.”

fahum la yantiquna
“So, they shall not speak.”

law anfaqta ma fi al-ardi jami`an
“Had you spent all that is in the earth,

ma allafta bayna qulubihim
you could not have united their hearts,

wa lakinna allaha allafa baynahum
but Allah united them.

innahu `azizun hakimun
Surely, He is Mighty, Wise.”

wa salla allahu `ala muhammadin wa alihi alttahirina
May Allah bless Muhammad and his immaculate Household.

Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq’s Evil-Repelling Prayer Fourth: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam Ja`far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (`a):
bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

ya khaliqa alkhalqi
O Creator of the creation!

wa ya basita alrrizqi
O Amplifying of sustenance!

wa ya faliqa alhabbi
O Splitter of grains!

wa ya bari'a alnnasami
O Originator of spirits!

wa muhyiyaa almawta
O Reviver of the dead!

wa mumita al-ahya'i
O Deadener of the living!

wa da'ima alththabati
O constantly Firm!

wa mukhrija alnnabati
O Bringer forth of plants!

if`al bi ma anta ahluhu
(Please) do to me what befits You to do,

wa la taf`al bi ma ana ahluhu
but do not do to me what I deserve,

wa anta ahlu alttaqwa wa ahlu almaghfirati
for You are the worthiest to be feared and the worthiest to forgive.

Imam Musa al-Kazim’s Evil-Repelling Prayer
Fifth: `Ali ibn Yaqtin has reported that when Imam Musa ibn Ja`far (`a) was with some of his relatives, he was informed about the decisions that Musa ibn al-Mahdi, the brother of Harun the `Abbasid ruler, had made about him. He asked his relatives, “What do you think?” They said, “We think that it is better for you to avoid him and hide yourself since no one can be immune from his wickedness.” Imam al-Kazim (`a) smiled and quoted this poetic verse as example:
The eaters of the hot, mean meals (i.e. Quraysh) have claimed that they will overcome their Lord.
Verily, the overcomer of all combatants shall most surely win.
He (`a) then raised his hands towards the sky and said this supplicatory prayer:
ilahi kam min `aduwwin shahadha li zubata mudyatihi
O my God, too many are the enemies who honed their daggers’ edge against me,

wa arhafa li shaba haddihi
sharpened the heads of their weapons against me,

wa dafa li qawatila sumumihi
mixed for me their deadly poisons,

wa lam tanam `anni `aynu hirasatihi
and kept a sleepless eye on me,

falamma ra'ayta da`fi an ihtimali alfawadihi
but when You considered that I am too weak to bear hardships

wa `ajzi `an mulimmati aljawa'ihi
and I am too powerless to bear the accumulating cataclysms,

sarafta dhalika `anni bihawlika wa quwwatika
You warded off all that from me through Your might and power,

la bihawlin minni wa la quwwatin
but not through my might or power.

fa'alqaytahu fi alhafiri alladhi ihtafarahu li
You have thus thrown him in the hole, which he had dug for me,

kha'iban mimma ammalahu fi alddunya
making him lose any hope he had in this world

mutaba`idan mimma rajahu fi al-akhirati
and move away from what he had expected in the Hereafter.

falaka alhamdu `ala dhalika
So, all praise be to you for that;

qadra istihqaqika sayyidi
praise that is comparable to what You deserve, O my master.

allahumma fakhudhhu bi`izzatika
So, O Allah, (please) grasp him by Your almightiness,

waflul haddahu `anni biqudratika
notch his sharpness against me with Your omnipotence,

waj`al lahu shughlan fima yalihi
and cause him to be engaged with what will inflict him

wa `ajzan `amma yunawihi
and to be too weak to face his rivals.

allahumma wa a`dini `alayhi `adwan hadiratan
O Allah, (please) help me against his animosity with such help that is in progress

takunu min ghayzi shifa'an
and due to which my rage will be healed

wa min hanaqi `alayhi wiqa'an
and my anger will protect me against him.

wa sil allahumma du`a'i bil-ijabati
O Allah, (please) connect my prayer with Your response,

wanzim shikayati bilttaghyiri
attach my complaint to the reply that changes my state,

wa `arrifhu `amma qalilin ma aw`adta alzzalimina
show him very soon and practically what You have prepared threateningly for the wrongdoers,

wa `arrifni ma wa`adta fi ijabati almudtarrina
and show me very soon and practically how You respond to the distressed ones.

innaka dhulfadli al`azimi
Verily, You are the Lord of great favor

walmanni alkarimi
and generous conferral.

The attendants then separated. Their next meeting was to discuss the news of the death of Musa ibn al-Mahdi.

The Pocket Patch; Imam al-Rida’s Supplicatory Amulet
Sixth: Yasir, the servant of al-Ma'mun the `Abbasid ruler, has reported that when Imam Abu’l-Hasan `Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (`a) arrived in the palace of Hamid ibn Qahtabah to live in, he took off his shirt and handed it over to Hamid, who took it and gave it to one of his she-servants to wash it. Soon after that, the she-servant returned carrying a patch. She gave it to Hamid and said, “I have found this in the pocket of Abu’l-Hasan.”
Asking about it, Hamid said to Imam al-Rida (`a), “May Allah accept me as ransom for you! The she-servant has found a patch in your pocket. What is it?”
Answering him, the Imam (`a) said, “Hamid, this is a supplicatory amulet that I never put aside.”
Hamid said, “Will you kindly honor us with it?”
Imam al-Rida (`a) further explained, “Whoever carries this supplicatory amulet in his pocket, will be saved from tribulations and it will protect him from Satan the accursed.”
Then, Imam al-Rida (`a) dictated its form to Hamid. It is thus the following:
bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

bismillahi
In the Name of Allah.

inni a`udhu bilrrahmani minka in kunta taqiyyan
Surely, I seek refuge in the Beneficent Allah from you, if you are pious

aw ghayra taqiyyin
or impious.

akhadhtu billahi alssami`i albasiri
I seek Allah the All-hearing and All-seeing

`ala sam`ika wa basarika
to guard me against your hearing and your sight.

la sultana laka `alayya
You have authority neither over me,

wa la `ala sam`i
nor over my hearing,

wa la `ala basari
nor over my sight,

wa la `ala sha`ri
nor over my hair,

wa la `ala bashari
nor over my skin,

wa la `ala lahmi
nor over my flesh,

wa la `ala dami
nor over my blood,

This supplicatory amulet is connected to a miraculous story that was reported by Abu’l-Salt who, reporting this story, has said: One day, my master `Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (`a) was sitting in his house when a messenger of the ruler, al-Ma'mun, came to him and informed that the ruler had summoned him to present himself before him. `Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (`a) stood up and said to me, “Abu’l-Salt, it is not usual that the ruler summons me at such time unless there will be a catastrophic matter. No, by Allah! He will not be able to inflict any misfortunate thing upon me, because I carry with me a few words that came to my hand from my grandfather, the Holy Prophet (s).”
I, Abu’l-Salt, then came out with the Imam (`a) to respond to al-Ma'mun’s summon. The moment Imam al-Rida’s eyes fell on al-Ma'mun, he said this supplicatory amulet entirely. When he was present there, the ruler looked at the Imam (`a) and said, “Abu’l-Hasan, I have ordered one hundred thousand dirhams to be given to you. You may also write to me whatever you need.”
When the Imam (`a) left, al-Ma'mun looked at his back and said, “I wanted something, but Allah wanted another. However, what Allah wants must be better.”

O He Who has saved Lot from the wicked people!

ya man najja hudan min alqawmi al`adina
O He Who has saved Hud from the transgressing people!

ya man najja muhammadan salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi min alqawmi alkafirina
O He Who has saved Muhammad, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household, from the disbelieving people!

najjini min a`da'i wa a`da'ika
(Please) save me from my and Your enemies,

bi-asma'ika ya rahmanu ya rahimu
in the name of Your Names; O All-beneficent, O All-merciful.

la sabila lahum `ala man ta`awwadha bilqur'ani
They have no way to harm whoever prays the protection of the Qur'an

wastajaraka bilrarhimi alrrahmani
and prays the shelter of You in the name of Your Names: the All-merciful and the All-beneficent.

alrrahmanu `ala al`arshi istawa
“The All-beneficent is firmly established on the throne (of authority).”

inna batsha rabbika lashadidun
“Truly, strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.

innahu huwa yubdi'u wa yu`idu
It is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life),

wa huwa alghafuru alwadudu
and He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,

dhu al`arshi almajidu
Lord of the Throne of Glory,

fa``alun lima yuridu
and Doer (without let) of all that He intends.”

fa'in tawallaw faqul hasbiya allahu
“But if they turn away, then say: ‘Allah suffices me:

la ilaha illa huwa
there is no god but He.:

`alayhi tawakkaltu
On Him is my trust,

wa huwa rabbu al`arshi al`azimi
and He the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme.’”

Imam al-Kazim’s Evil-Averting Prayer
Eighteenth: This is Imam Musa ibn Ja`far al-Kazim’s evil-averting prayer:
tawakkaltu `ala alhayyi alladhi la yamutu
I put my trust in the ever-living Lord Who never dies.

wa tahassantu bidhi al`izzati waljabaruti
I pray the immunity of the Lord of almightiness and omnipotence.

wasta`antu bidhi alkibriya'i walmalakuti
I pray the aid of the Lord of grandeur and kingdom.

mawlaya istaslamtu ilayka fala tuslimni
O my Master, I surrender to You; so, (please) do not disappoint me,

wa tawakkaltu `alayka fala takhdhulni
I put my trust in You; so, (please) do not thwart me,

wa laja'tu ila zillika albasiti fala tatrahni
and to Your extensive shadow do I resort; so, (please) do not throw me away.

anta almatlabu wa ilayka almahrabu
You are the utmost purpose and to You are all flights made.

ta`lamu ma ukhfi wa ma u`linu
You know whatever I hide and whatever I do openly.

wa ta`lamu kha'inata al-a`yuni wa ma tukhfi alssuduru
You know the stealthy looks of eyes and what is concealed in breasts.

fa'amsik `anniya allahumma aydiya alzzalimina
So, O Allah, (please) withhold the hands of the transgressors against me,

min aljinni wal-insi ajma`ina
including all jinn and all human beings,

washfini wa `afini
heal me, and grant me wellbeing,

ya arhama alrrahimina
O most merciful of all those who show mercy!

Imam Muhammad al-Taqi’s evil-averting prayer
Nineteenth: This is the evil-averting prayer (Hijab) of Imam Muhammad ibn `Ali al-Taqi (`a):
alkhaliqu a`zamu min almakhluqina
The Creator is greater than the creatures.

walrraziqu absatu yadan min almarzuqina
The Sustaining Lord is more liberal than the sustained beings.

wa naru allahi almusadatu
The awning over fire of Allah

fi `amadin mumaddadatin
in outstretched columns

takidu af'idata almaradati
will frustrate the plots of the hearts of the rebellious

wa taruddu kayda alhasadati
and will thwart the trickeries of the envious

bil-aqsami bil-ahkami
in the name of the Oaths, the Decrees,

billawhi almahfuzi
the Preserved Tablet,

walhijabi almadrubi
the Hanged Down Screen,

bi`arshi rabbina al`azimi
and the Throne of our Great Lord.

ihtajabtu wastatartu
I seek the screen, the covering,

wastajartu wa`tasamtu
the shelter, the safeguard,

and the haven of ‘ail-lam-mim,’ ‘kaf-ha'-ya'-`ayn-sad,’

wa bita ha wa bita' sin mim
‘ta-ha,’ ‘ta'-sin-mim,’

wa biha' mim wa biha' mim `ayn sin qaf wa nun
‘ha'-mim,’ ‘ha'-mim-`ayn-sin-qaf,’ ‘nun,’

wa bita sin wa biqaf walqur'ani almajidi
‘ta-sin,’ ‘qaf,’ ‘the Glorious Qur'an,’

wa innahu laqasamun law ta`lamuna `azimun
and ‘And most surely, it is a very great oath if you only knew.’

wallahu waliyyi wa ni`ma alwakilu
Allah is my guardian, and the most excellent protector is He.

Twentieth: Shaykh al-Kulayni, in his book entitled Ta`bir al-Ru'ya, has reported on the authority of al-Washsha' who reported Imam al-Rida (`a) as saying: In my sleep, I saw my father saying to me: Son, whenever you are in a trouble, repeat this saying as many times as possible:
ya ra'ufu ya rahimu
O All-compassionate! O All-merciful!

Imam al-Rida (`a) then commented, “There is not any difference between what we (i.e. the Holy Infallibles) see in waking and what we see in sleep.”
Supplicatory Prayer for Sustenance
Twenty-first: In addition to sustenance, this supplicatory prayer, which is quoted from Sayyid Ibn Tawus’s book of al-Mujtana, may be used for other purposes:
allahumma inna dhunubi lam yabqa laha illa raja'u `afwika
O Allah, nothing has indeed left for my sins except my hope for You pardon

wa qad qaddamtu alata alhirmani bayna yadayya
although I have done things due to which I deserve deprivation of Your pardon.

fa'ana as'aluka ma la astahiqquhu
Therefore, I beseech You for what I do not deserve,

wa ad`uka ma la astawjibuhu
I seek from You what I do not merit,

and I implore You for what I do not earn.

wa lam yakhfa `alayka hali
My situation is not concealed from You

wa in khafiya `ala alnnasi kunhu ma`rifati amri
although the actual knowledge of my manners is hidden from people.

allahumma in kana rizqi fi alssama'i fa'ahbithu
O Allah, if my sustenance in the sky, then (please) send it down to me,

wa in kana fi al-ardi fa'azhirhu
if it is in the earth, then (please) show it to me,

wa in kana ba`idan faqarribhu
if it is far off, then (please) draw it near me,

wa in kana qariban fayassirhu
if it is near, then (please) make it easy for me to reach it,

wa in kana qalilan fakaththirhu
and if it is little, then (please) multiply it for me

wa barik li fihi
and grant me its blessings.

Supplicatory Prayer for repelling the evil of Iblis Twenty-second: This supplicatory prayer for repelling the evil of Iblis (i.e. Satan) is also quoted from the book of al-Mujtana:
allahumma inna iblisa `abdun min `abidika
O Allah, Iblis is not but one of Your servants;

yarani min haythu la arahu
he can see me from whence I cannot see him,

wa anta tarahu min haythu la yaraka
but You can see him from whence he cannot see You.

wa anta aqwa `ala amrihi kullihi
While You have full power over all of his deeds,

wa huwa la yaqwa `ala shay'in min amrika
he has no power over any of Your decrees.

allahumma fa'ana asta`inu bika `alayhi ya rabbi
So, O Allah, I pray Your help against him, O Lord,

fa'inni la taqata li bihi
for I have no strength to challenge him

and I have neither might nor power against him except through You, O my Lord.

allahumma in aradani fa'arid-hu
O Allah, if he intends evil to me, then (please) deter him,

wa in kadani fakid-hu
if he plots against me, then (please) plot against him,

wakfini sharrahu
save me from his evils,

waj`al kaydahu fi nahrihi
and make his trickery to be hanged to his own neck,

birahmatika ya arhama alrrahimina
in the name of Your mercy, O most merciful of all those who show mercy.

wa salla allahu `ala muhammadin wa alihi alttahirina
May Allah bless Muhammad and his Immaculate Household.
