Supplication of Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) - 1
اَللَّهُمَّ احْرُسْنِيْ بِعَيْنِك الَّتِىْ لاَ تَنَامُ وَ اكْفِنِيْ بِرُكْنِكَ الَّذِىْ لاَ يُرَامُ،
Allaahummah’ rusnee bi-a’inikallatee laa tanaamu wakfinee biruknikalladhee laa yuraam.
O Allah guard me by Your eye that does not sleep and suffice for me by Your support which does not decline
وَ اغْفِرْلِىْ بِقُدْرَتِكَ حَتّٰی لاَ اَهْلُكَ وَ اَنْتَ رَجَائِىْ،
Waghfirlee biqudratika h’attaa laa ahluka wa anta rajaa-ee.
and forgive me by Your power. For You are my Hope.
رَبِّ كَمْ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ اَنْعَمْتَ بِهَا عَلَىَّ قَلَّ عِنْدَهَا شُكْرِىْ،
Rabbi kam min ni’matin an-a’mta bihaa a’layya qalla i’ndahaa shukree.
My Lord how many bounties have You bestowed to me. And very less is my thankfulness for them.
وَ كَمْ مِنْ بَلِيَّةٍ اِبْتَلَيْتَنِيْ بِهَا قَلَّ لَكَ عِنْدَهَا صَبْرِىْ،
Wa kam mim baleeyatin ibtalaitanee bihaa qalla laka i’ndahaa s’abree.
And how many tests You have put me through and how less was my patience for You in them.
فَيَا مَنْ قَلَّ مِنْ نِعْمَتِهِ شُكْرِىْ فَلَمْ يَحْرِمَنِيْ،
Fayaaman qalla min ni’matihi shukree falam yah’rimnee.
O One Who does not deprive me when my thankfulness for His bounties is less.
وَ يَا مَنْ رَآنِيْ عَلٰی الْمَعَاصِىْ فَلَمْ يفْضَحْنِيْ،
Wa yaa mar raa-anee a’lal maa’a’s’ee falam yafz”ah’nee.
Then O One Who does not degrade me when my patience is less during the tests put by Him. O One Who sees the mistakes but does not degrade me.
يَا ذَا الْمَعْرُوْفِ الَّذِىْ لاَ يَنْقَضِىْ مَعْرُوْفُهُ اَبَداً،
Yaa dhal ma’roofilladhee laa yanqaz”ee ma’roofuhu abadaa.
O One Whose goodness is never reduced
وَ يَا ذَا النَّعْمَاءِ الَّتِىْ لاَ تُحْصِىْ عَدَدًا،
yaa dhan ni’maa illatee laa tuh’see a’dadaa.
O One Whose bounties can never be calculated.
اَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّىَ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ…
As-aluka an tu’salli a’laa muh’ammadinw wa aali muh’ammad…
Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad…
وَ بِكَ اَدْراَ فِىْ نُحُوْرِ اْلاَعْدَاءِ وَ الْجَبَّارِيْنَ،
Wa bika adraa fee nuh’ooril aa’daaa-i wal jabbaareen.
By You I hit on the necks of the enemies and tyrants.
اَللَّهُمَّ اَعِنِّيْ عَلٰی دِيْنِيْ بِالدُّنْيَا،
Allaahumma aa’nnee a’laa deenee biddunyaa.
O Allah, help me in my religion by the world
وَ عَلٰى آخِرَتِىْ بِالتَّقْوٰی،
Wa a’laa aakhiratee bittaqwa.
and on my hereafter by my piety.
وَ احْفَظْنِيْ فِيْمَا غَيْبَتَ عَنِّيْ،
Wa ah’faz’nee feema ghaibata a’nnee.
And protect me from what is hidden from me.
وَ لاَ تَكِلْنِيْ إِلٰی نَفْسِى فِيْمَا خَطَرْتُهُ عَلىَّ،
Wa laa takilnee ilaa nafsee feemaa khat’artuhu a’lai.
And do not leave me to my self in what is dangerous for me.
يَا مَنْ لاَ تَضَرُّهُ الذُّنُوْبُ وَ لاَ تَنْقَصُهُ الْمَغْفِرَةُ،
Yaa mal laa tadharruhudh dhunoobu wa laa tanqas’uhul maghfirah.
O One with Whom no sin causes harm and there is no decrease in forgiveness.
اغْفِرْ لِىْ مَا لاَ يَضُرَّكَ،
ighfirlee maa laa yaz’’urrak.
Forgive me which does not harm You
وَ اعْطِنْيْ مَا لاَ يَنْقَصُكَ إِنَّكَ وَهَّابُ،
wa’t’inee maa laa yanqas’uka. innaka wahhaab.
and give that which is not decreased for You. Indeed You are the greatest Giver.
اَسْاَلُكَ فَرَجًا قَرِيْباً وَ صَبْراً عَاجِلاً وَ رِزْقًا وَاسِعًا،
As-aluka farajan qareebanw wa s’abran a’a’jilanw wa rizqanw waasia’-a.
I ask You for a quick release, an immediate patience and a wide sustenance,
وَ الْعَافِيَةَ مِنْ جَمِيْعِ الْبَلايَا يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.
wal a’a’fiyatika min jameei’l balaayaa. yaa arh’amar rah’imeen.
and release from all calamities. O the best of the merciful ones.

5. Four simple effective quranic duas
- From Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) ( See i to iv below)
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as)had expressed surprise why Momins do not use the 4 simple effective duas available to them when they’re in need
i. To Overcome Fear of Authority/Ruler:The Imam (as) wondered that when a person’s enemies are deceitful against him, he doesn’t recite these words.Because Allah says, thereafter, that when the Mu’mins of the Tribe of Pharo recited these words, He protected them from the deceit of their enemies.
So Allah saved him from the evil of their schemes. (Verse 45)
وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِي إِلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَادِ
Wa ufawwidhu amree ilallaah inallaaha baseerun bil ‘ibad
So you shall remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allah, Surely Allah sees the servants. [Sura Ghafir v 44)
ii. For Rizq (Sustenance):The Imam (as) wondered that when a person aspires for wealth and property, why doesn’t he recite the following words.Because Allah has said that those who utter these words have acquired a great Bounty.
مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ ۚ
Mashallahu la quwwata illa billah
It is as Allah has pleased, there is no power save in Allah [Sura Kahf, Verse 39]
iii For Sorrows/Sufferings:
The Imam (as) was surprised that why people don’t recite the following words that Prophet Yunus (as) recited while he was in the belly of the fish:Because Allah says that He heard the prayer of Yunus and gave him relief from his trouble.
لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Laa ilaaha ilaa anta subhanaka innee kuntu minadhaalimeen
There is no god but Thou, glory be to Thee; surely I am of those who make themselves to suffer loss.Sura 21:87
iv. Other Issues/Needs: Because thereafter, Allah has promised to answer the Mu’min’s prayers.
حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Hasbunallahu wa n’emal wakeel
Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector.3:173

However, there are some preconditions for the dua to be accepted which include:
· Taqwa - Fear of Allah (swt)
· Efforts and Perseverance. Efforts like that of Hajra who ran between the mountains of Safa and Marwah with patience and perseverance in not giving up and continuing to run for seven rounds.
· Conviction and belief in the words and possible result
The reward will then exceed all expectations, like the well of zam zam although what Lady Hajira asked for was only a cupful!
