Dua Abaraat
for Great Hardships.

Signifcance of this Duaa

Supplication of Abaraat from the book ‘Balad ul Ameen’ p. 461 of Sheikh Kaf’ami (R.A.).
He writes:This is a valuable and virtuous supplication narrated from Imam Mahdi (A.S.) and should be recited at times of great sufferings and hardships; this supplication has been named as the ‘Supplication of Abaraat’.
[1] We have narrated from Allama Hilli (R.A.) that the supplication of Abaraat is associated with our master, Imam Sadiq (A.S.) and Imam Mahdi (A.S.) commanded Razi ud Deen Aavi for its recitation.

Allāhumma innī as'aluka yā rāḥima l-'abarāt, wa yā kāshifa z-zafarāt,
O Allāh, I ask You, O Merciful to tears, and O Remover of sighs,

Anta l-ladhī taqsha'u saḥāba l-miḥan, wa qad amsat thiqālā,
You are the One Who dispels the clouds of tribulations, when they have become heavy,

wa tajlū ḍabāba l-fitan, wa qad saḥabat adhyālā,
and clears the fog of seditions, when they have dragged their tails (spread widely),

wa taj'alu zar'ahā hashīman, wa bunyānahā hadīman, wa 'iẓāmahā ramīman,
and makes its crops (of tribulation) straw, its structures ruins, and its bones decayed,

wa taruddu l-maghlūba ghāliban, wa l-maṭlūba ṭāliban,
and returns the vanquished as a victor, and the pursued as a pursuer,

wa l-maqhūra qāhiran, wa l-maqdūra 'alayhi qādiran.
and the oppressed as an oppressor, and the overpowered as powerful.

Fakam min 'abdin nādāka rabbi innī maghlūbun fa-ntaṣir,
How many a servant called upon You: My Lord, I am vanquished, so grant victory,

fa-fataḥta lahu min naṣrika abwāba s-samā'i bi-mā'in munhamir,
so You opened for him, from Your victory, the gates of the heaven with pouring water,

wa fajja'rta lahu min 'awnika 'uyūnan, fa-ltaqā l-mā'u 'alā amrin qad qudir,
and You caused springs to gush forth for him from Your aid, so the water met for an affair already decreed,

wa ḥamaltahu min kifāyatika 'alā dhāti alwāḥin wa dusur.
and You carried him, out of Your sufficiency, upon that of planks and nails (the Ark).

Rabbi ṣalli 'alā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammad,
My Lord, bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad,

wa-ftaḥ lī min naṣrika abwāba s-samā'i bi-mā'in munhamir,
and open for me, from Your victory, the gates of the heaven with pouring water,

wa fajji'r lī min 'awnika 'uyūnan li-yaltaqiya mā'u farajī 'alā amrin qad qudir,
and cause springs to gush forth for me from Your aid so the water of my relief may meet for an affair already decreed,

wa-ḥmilnī yā rabbi min kifāyatika 'alā dhāti alwāḥin wa dusur.
and carry me, O Lord, out of Your sufficiency, upon that of planks and nails.

Yā man idhā walaja l-'abdu fī laylin min ḥīratihi yahīm,
O You, when the servant enters a night of his confusion, wandering,

wa lam yajid lahu ṣarīkhan yaṣrukhuhu min waliyyin wa lā ḥamīm,
and finds no helper to call upon, neither a guardian nor a close friend,

wajada yā rabbi min ma'ūnatika ṣarīkhan mughīthan,
he finds, O Lord, from Your aid, a helper who provides relief,

wa waliyyan yaṭlubuhu ḥathīthan, yunjīhi min ḍīqi amrihi wa ḥarajihi,
and a guardian seeking him quickly, rescuing him from the narrowness and difficulty of his situation,

wa yuẓhiru lahu a'lāma farajihi.
and revealing to him the signs of his relief.

Allāhumma fa-yā man qudratuhu qāhirah, wa āyātuhu bāhirah,
O Allāh, O You Whose power is overwhelming, and Whose signs are dazzling,

wa naqimātuhu qāṣimatun li-kulli jabbār,
and Whose retaliations are crushing to every tyrant,

dāmighatun li-kulli kafūrin khattār, ṣalli yā rabbi 'alā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammad,
smashing to every ungrateful deceiver, O Lord, bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad,

wa-nẓur ilayya yā rabbi naẓratan min naẓarātika raḥīmah,
and look upon me, O Lord, with a glance from Your merciful glances,

tajlī bi-hā 'annī ẓulmatan 'ākifatan muqīmatan min 'āhah
by which You clear away from me an abiding, persistent darkness of an affliction,

jaffat minhā ḍ-ḍurū', wa talifat minhā z-zurū',
from which udders have dried up, and crops have perished,

wa-nhamalat min ajlihā d-dumū', wa-shtamala lahā 'alā l-qulūbi l-ya's,
and because of which tears have streamed, and despair has enveloped the hearts,

wa kharrat bi-sababihā l-anfās.
and for which breaths have collapsed.

Ilāhī fa-ḥifẓan ḥifẓan li-gharā'isa gharsuhā bi-yadi r-raḥmān,
My God, so (I beg for) protection, protection for the saplings whose planting is by the hand of the Most Merciful,

wa shurbuhā min mā'i l-ḥayawān, wa najātuhā bi-dukhūli l-jinān,
and whose drink is from the water of life, and whose salvation is by entering the Gardens,

an takūna bi-yadi sh-shayṭāni tuḥazz, wa bi-fa'sihi tuqṭa'u wa tujazz.
(from) being cut by the hand of Satan, and chopped and lopped by his axe.

Ilāhī fa-man awlā minka bi-an yakūna 'an ḥarīmika dāfi'an,
My God, who is worthier than You to be a defender of Your sanctuary,

wa man ajdaru minka bi-an yakūna 'an ḥimāka ḥārisan wa māni'an.
and who is more deserving than You to be a guardian and preventer of Your protection?

Ilāhī inna l-amra qad hāla fa-hawwinh, wa khashuna fa-alin'h,
My God, the matter has terrified, so make it easy, and it has become rough, so soften it,

wa inna l-qulūba kā'at fa-ṭamminhā, wa n-nufūsa rtā'at fa-sakkinhā.
and the hearts have become weak, so reassure them, and the souls have been terrified, so calm them.

Ilāhī ilāhī tadārak aqdāman zallat,
My God, my God, recover feet that have slipped,

wa afkāran fī mahāmati l-ḥīrati ḍallat,
and thoughts that have strayed in the wilderness of confusion,

bi-an ra'at jabraka 'alā kasīrihā, wa iṭlāqaka li-asīrihā,
by them seeing Your mending of its brokenness, and Your release of its captive,

wa ijārataka li-mustajīrihā ajḥafa ḍ-ḍurru bi-l-maḍrūr,
and Your granting of protection to its seeker of refuge, for the harm has been severe upon the afflicted,

wa labba dā'īhi bi-l-wayli wa th-thubūr.
and his caller has responded with woe and destruction.

Fa-hal yaḥsunu min 'adlika yā mawlāya an tada'ahu farīsata l-balā'i wa huwa laka rāj,
Does it befit Your justice, O my Master, that You leave him a prey to tribulation while he is hopeful in You,

am hal yajmulu min faḍlika an yakhūḍa lujjati l-ghammā'i wa huwa ilayka lāj.
or does it befit Your favor that he plunges into the deep sea of grief while he is seeking refuge with You?

Mawlāya la-in kuntu lā ashuqqu 'alā nafsī fī t-tuqā,
My Master, if I do not exert myself in piety,

wa lā ablughu fī ḥamli a'bā'i ṭ-ṭā'ati mablagha r-riḍā,
nor reach the level of satisfaction in bearing the burdens of obedience,

wa lā antaẓimu fī silki qawmin rafaḍū d-dunyā,
nor join the ranks of a people who rejected the world,

fa-hum khumṣu l-buṭūni mina ṭ-ṭawā, dhublu sh-shifāhi mina ẓ-ẓamā',
so their bellies are empty from hunger, their lips withered from thirst,

wa 'umshu l-'uyūni mina l-bukā',
and their eyes dim from weeping,

bal ataytuka bi-ḍa'fin mina l-'amal, wa ẓahrin thaqīlin bi-l-khaṭāyā wa z-zalal,
but rather I came to You with weak deeds, and a back heavy with sins and errors,

wa nafsin li-r-rāḥati mu'tādah, wa li-dawā'ī sh-shahwati munqādah.
and a soul accustomed to comfort, and compliant to the calls of desire.

A-mā yakfīnī yā rabbi wasīlatan ilayka,
Does it not suffice me, O Lord, as a means to You,

wa dharī'atan ladayk, a-nnanī li-awliyā'i dīnika muwālin,
and an intercession before You, that I am loyal to the friends of Your religion,

wa fī maḥabbatihim mughālin, wa li-jilbābi l-balā'i fīhim lābis,
and excessive in their love, and wearing the garment of affliction for their sake,

wa li-kitābi taḥammuli l-'anā'i bihim dāris?
and studying the script of enduring hardship because of them?

A-mā yakfīnī an arūḥa fīhim maẓlūman, wa aghdū makẓūman,
Does it not suffice me that I leave among them as one wronged, and return choked with grief,

wa aqḍiya ba'da humūmin humūman, wa ba'da wujūmin wujūman,
and spend after worries, (more) worries, and after silent grief, (more) silent grief?

A-mā 'indaka yā mawlāya bi-hādhīhi ḥurmatun lā tuḍayya',
Is there not with You, O my Master, by this, a sanctity that is not neglected,

wa dhimmatun bi-adnāhā tuqtana', fa-li-ma lā tamna'unī yā rabbi wa hā anā dhā gharīq,
and a covenant that is satisfied with its least? So why do You not prevent (save) me, O Lord, while here I am drowning,

wa tada'unī hākadhā wa anā bi-nāri 'aduwwika ḥarīq?
and leave me thus while I am burning in the fire of Your enemy?

Mawlāya a-taj'alu awliyā'aka li-a'dā'ika ṭarā'id,
My Master, do You make Your friends as prey for Your enemies,

wa li-makrihim maṣā'id, wa tuqalliduhum min khasfihim qalā'id,
and snares for their deceit, and place around them necklaces of their humiliation,

wa anta māliku nufūsihim, an law qabaḍtahā jamadū,
while You are the Owner of their souls, that if You seized them they would freeze,

wa fī qabḍatika mawāddu anfāsihim, an law qaṭa'tahā khamadū,
and in Your grasp are the means of their breaths, that if You cut them off they would be extinguished?

Fa-mā yamna'uka yā rabbi an takuffa ba'sahum,
So what prevents You, O Lord, from restraining their might,

wa tanza'a 'anhum min ḥifẓika libāsahum,
and taking away from them the cloak of Your protection,

wa tu'arrīyahum min salāmatin bi-hā fī arḍika yasraḥūn,
and stripping them of the safety with which they roam freely in Your land,

wa fī maydāni l-baghyi 'alā 'ibādika yamraḥūn.
and they revel in the field of transgression against Your servants?

Allāhumma ṣalli 'alā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammad,
O Allāh, bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad,

wa adriknī wa lammā yudriknī l-gharaq,
and reach me before drowning overtakes me,

wa tadāraknī wa lammā ghayyaba shamsiya sh-shafaq,
and retrieve me before twilight hides my sun.

Ilāhī kam min khā'ifin iltaja'a ilā sulṭān,
My God, how many a fearful one sought refuge with a ruler,

fa-āba 'anhu maḥfūẓan bi-amnin wa amān,
and returned from him protected with security and safety,

a-fa-aqṣudu yā rabbi a'ẓama min sulṭānika sulṭānan,
Do I then seek, O Lord, a ruler greater than Your rulership,

am aws'a min iḥsānika iḥsānā,
or a kindness broader than Your kindness,

am akbara mina qtidārika iqtidārā,
or a power greater than Your capability,

am akrama mina ntiṣārika intiṣārā,
or a victory more noble than Your victory?

Mā 'udhrī yā ilāhī idhā ḥaramtu min ḥusni l-karāmati nā'ilak,
What is my excuse, O my God, if I am deprived of Your bounty of noble generosity,

wa anta l-ladhī lā tukhayyibu āmilak, wa lā taruddu sā'ilak.
while You are the One Who does not disappoint Your hopeful one and does not reject Your beggar?

Ilāhī ilāhī ayna ayna kifāyatuka l-latī hiya nuṣratu l-mustaḍ'afīna mina l-anām,
My God, my God, where, where is Your sufficiency which is the help of the oppressed among mankind,

wa ayna ayna 'ināyatuka l-latī hiya junnatu l-mustahdafīna bi-jawri l-ayyām,
and where, where is Your care which is the shield of those targeted by the injustice of the days?

Ilayya ilayya bi-hā yā rabbi najjinī mina l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīn,
Towards me, towards me with it! O Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people,

innī massaniya ḍ-ḍurru wa anta arḥamu r-rāḥimīn.
Indeed, affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Mawlāya tarā taḥayyuṛī fī amrī, wa taqallubī fī ḍurrī,
My Master, You see my confusion in my affair, and my turning over in my distress,

wa nṭiwāya 'alā ḥurqati qalbī, wa ḥarārati ṣadrī,
and my concealing of the burning of my heart, and the heat of my chest,

fa-ṣalli yā rabbi 'alā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammad,
so bless, O Lord, Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad,

wa jud lī yā rabbi bi-mā anta ahluhu farajan wa makhrajan,
and be generous to me, O Lord, with what You are worthy of: relief and a way out,

wa yassir lī yā rabbi naḥwa l-bushrā manhajan.
and facilitate for me, O Lord, a path towards good tidings.

Wa j'al yā rabbi man yanṣibu liya l-ḥibālah,
And make, O Lord, the one who sets the trap for me,

li-yaṣra'anī bihā ṣarī'a mā makar,
to strike me down with it, felled by what he plotted,

wa man yaḥfiru liya l-bi'ra li-yūqi'anī fīhā,
and the one who digs the pit for me to make me fall into it,

My God, Your servant, Your servant! Answer his plea,

ḍa'īfuka ḍa'īfuk fa-farrij ghummatab,
Your weak one, Your weak one! Relieve his distress,

fa-qadi nqaṭa'a bihi kullu ḥablin illā ḥablak,
for every rope has been cut off for him except Your rope,

wa taqallaba 'anhu kullu ẓillin illā ẓillak.
and every shade has turned away from him except Your shade.

Mawlāya da'watī hādhihi in radadtahā ayna tuṣādifu mawḍi'a l-ijābah,

wa lā tamna'u dūna janābika man lā ya'lamu siwāhu janābā.

Ilāhī inna wajhan ilayka fī raghbatihi tawajjaha khalīqun bi-an tujībahu,
My God, a face that has turned to You in its desire is worthy that You answer it,

wa inna jabīnan laka bi-btihālihi sajada ḥaqīqun an yablugha mā qaṣad,
and a forehead that prostrated to You in its supplication is deserving of reaching what it sought,

wa inna khaddan ladayka bi-mas'alatihi ta'affara jadīrun an yafūza bi-murādihi wa yaẓfar.
and a cheek that has smeared itself with dust before You in its request is deserving of attaining its wish and succeeding.

Wa hā anā dhā yā ilāhī qad tarā ta'fīra khaddī,
And here I am, O my God, You certainly see the smearing of my cheek,

wa jtihādī fī mas'alatika wa jiddī,
and my effort and earnestness in my request to You,

fa-talaqqa yā rabbi raghabātī bi-raḥmatika qabūlā,
so receive, O Lord, my desires with Your mercy as acceptance,

wa sahhil ilā ṭalibātī bi-ra'fatika wuṣūlā,
and make easy to my requests, with Your compassion, attainment,

wa dhallil quṭūfa thammarati ijābatika lī tadhīlā.
and make the bunches of the fruit of Your answer submissive for me, submission.

Ilāhī fa-idhā qāma dhū ḥājatin bi-ḥājatihi shafī'ā,
My God, if a person in need stands with his need as an intercessor,

fa-wajadtahu mumtani'a n-najāḥi sahla l-qiyādi muṭī'ā,
and you found success difficult to attain, (but) easily led and obedient,

fa-innī astashfi'u ilayka bi-karāmatik,
then I intercede to You by Your nobility,

wa ṣ-ṣafwati min anāmika l-ladhīna ansha'ta lahum mā tuẓillu wa tuqill,
and by the elite of Your creatures for whom You originated what overshadows and what carries,

wa bara'ta mā yadiqqu wa yajill.

Wa lṭuf bī yā rabbi wa bi-jamī'i l-mu'minīna wa l-mu'mināt,
And be gentle with me, O Lord, and with all the believing men and women,

yā dhā l-quwwati l-matīn, bi-raḥmatika yā arḥama r-rāḥimīn,
O Possessor of firm strength, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful,

wa l-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-'ālamīn, wa ṣallā llāhu 'alā sayyidinā Muḥammadin an-nabiyyi wa ālihi ṭ-ṭāhirīn.
and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, and may God bless our Master Muḥammad the Prophet and his pure family.

O’ Allah, I beseech You, O’ He who showers Mercy upon the teardrops, O’ He who ends the sorrows of hearts, You are the One who scatters the clouds of sorrows and grief while they become extremely heavy, and you set aside the clouds of temptations while they stretch over the land, and make their group dry and breakable, and demolish its pillars, and disintegrate its bones, and help the dominated ones dominate, and the demanded one as the demander, and the suppressed one as the dominant, and the overpowered one as the Powerful.

How many people have called out, O’ Lord, I am suppressed, help me, and You have opened the doors of the sky for his help showering its water, and split the springs for his support, and the water met the command that was made the destiny, and carried him with Your Sufficiency over the object which has boards and nails (ships),

Repeat this line thrice
O’ Lord! I am dominated, thus help me .

O’ Lord! Bless Mohammad and his holy Progeny, and open the doors of Heaven from Your Help with showering water, and split open from Your support the springs so that the water of relief and peace meets what it has been destined for, and carry me, O’ My Lord, with Your Sufficiency, over the object having boards and nails (ships).

O’ He when his servant becomes confused with astonishment upon the arrival of night, and when he doesn’t find a supporter amongst his friend and relatives, O’ My Lord, he finds a supporter with Your Help, and a Guardian who helps him quickly, delivering him from the narrowness and entanglements of his affair, and makes the signs of his relief apparent for him.

O’ Allah! O’ He whose Power is Dominant, and Whose Signs are evident, and whose vengeance will destroys all the tyrants, and remove all the deceiving infidels, bless Mohammad and his holy Progeny, and supervise me, O’ My Lord, with a gaze of Your Merciful supervision, so that it sets aside the permanent and eternal darkness that had enveloped me, from the calamities which result in the dryness of the chests, and the destructions of cultivations, and result in bloodshed, and the overcoming of heart by hopelessness and distress, and due to which the heartbeats halt.

O’ Lord! Protect the trees which have been placed by the divine hands, and have been watered with the reviving water, and which will be delivered by entering heaven, protect it from being demolished by the hands of Satan, and being cut down into pieces by his axe.

O’ Lord, who is worthier than You for defending Your Sanctity? And who is more suitable than You to undertake the responsibility of guarding his near and dear ones.

O’ Allah! The Affair has become difficult, so make it easy; and it has become rigid, thus make it soft; the hearts have become weak and shivering, thus give them confidence; the breaths have become fearful and frightened, thus make them relaxed;

O’ My Lord! O’ My Lord! Help the trembling feet, and help the wandering and lost thoughts, until they witness that You have compensated their defeat; and that You have released their slaves, and have provided shelter to their refugees; as helplessness has harmed the distressed more than his capability, and has responded to its invocator with moaning and wails.

O’ my Master! Is it appropriate for Your Justice to entangle in difficulties those who have hope in You? Or is it appropriate for Your Grace to drown in sorrows and distress those who seek shelter in You?

O’ My Master! Although I haven’t suffered hardships for observing Piety, and haven’t obeyed you the way it would satisfy You, and haven’t joined the group which has released the world and resultantly their stomachs are facing hunger for You, and their lips have dried, and their eyes have swollen with weeping; in fact I came to You with weakness of deeds and religion, and my back has heaved from the burden of sins and mistakes, and I have habituated my soul with ease and relaxation, and I have submitted to my forces of lust.

O’ Lord! Is it not sufficient for me as a means towards You that I befriend You Friends, and that I am highly devoted to them, and have worn the attire of difficulties for them, and have studied the book of enduring hardships for them.

Is it not sufficient for me that I have been oppressed for them, and have remained silent, and that I am continuously bearing sorrows and entanglements? And have muted myself out of extreme fear?

O’ My Master! Would all these things not create a sanctity for me which cannot be destroyed? Or would it not give me a right which would deliver me with its littleness?

O’ Master! Why don’t You protect me when You can see me drowning? And why don’t You protect me while You can witness that I am entangled by the fire that Your enemy has lit up?

O My Master! Will You throw Your Friends before Your Enemies? And let them be deceived by their schemes? Will you let them be enslaved with their humiliation and disgrace? While all the souls are in Your hands; such that if You take their souls, they will freeze; their source of breathing is also in Your hands, such that if You stop it, they will die; then what stops You,

O’ Lord, from ending their mischief, and uncovering them from the cover of Your guardianship, and take away the good-health through which they wander on Your Earth, the same good-health that makes them stand arrogantly against Your Servants in the fields of oppression.

O’ Allah! Bless Mohammad and his holy Progeny, and help me before I drown, and hold me before my life’s sun disappears in the horizon.

O’ Allah! How many frightened men have sought shelter in the kings and received protection and safety from them;

O’ Lord! Is there a King with a greater Dominion than You so that I turn towards him? Or whose favors are more extensive than You? Or whose reign is greater than Your rein? Or Whose support is more kind than Your support? What excuse would I have if You deprive someone who has come near You from Your Beneficence and kind behavior? While You are the one who never makes the hopeful hopeless, and You never reject the request of a requester.

O’ Lord! O’ Lord! Where is Your Sufficiency which becomes the support of the weak against the people, and where is Your blessings which itself is the shield for those who are targeted by the oppressions of life? Give it to me, give it to me,

O’ Lord, deliver me from the nation of oppressors, indeed I am distressed and You are the Most Merciful of all the Merciful.

O’ Master! You witness my astonishment in my affair, and my struggling in entanglements, and You can witness my heart burning in flames, and the heat of my chest; thus bless Mohammad and his holy Progeny, and bestow upon me, O’ Lord, with such relief and exit that You are worthy of; and open a luminous way, O’ Lord, before our glowing faces;

O’ Lord! Whoever plans a trap against me so that I fall in it with his schemes, make him fall in his own trap, and whoever digs a well to trap me into falling in it, make him fall in his own well, and keep me away,

O’ Lord, from his evil and his plots and his corruption and his harm, like You keep them away from the nation of god-fearing men, and from those who have submitted themselves completely to their religion only, and to the invocator who invites towards faith.

O’ Lord! Your Servant, Your Servant, answer his supplication; Your weak, Your weak, relieve his sorrows; verily all his connections have broken except his connection with You, all shadows have moved away from him except Your shadow of Mercy.

O’ Master! If you reject our supplication, then where will our supplications be answered? If our optimism towards You is rendered false, then where will we seek help from? Do not reject from Your door someone who doesn’t know of any other door, and do not deprive from Your Courtyard those who don’t know of any other courtyard.

Then prostrate and say
“O Lord! The face that has turned towards You with desire is worthy of receiving a position response, and the forehead that has prostrated before You with humility is worthy of reaching his goal, and the cheek that is rubbed on the ground before Your Threshold is worthy of attaining its motive and success;

O’ Lord! Here I am before You with my cheek rubbing the ground struggling for achieving my demand from You; O’ Lord! Accept from me that which I desire with Your Mercy, and help me reach my demand with Your exclusive benevolence and grace, and make me eat the fruit of Your acceptance.

O’ Lord! When a needy introduces an intercessor for his demand, and You find him in such a state that his prosperity is prevented and he will easily become obedient; I have also taken Your Generosity and Kindness, and the chosen ones from Your Creations as my intercessors, those for whose sake You have created all that casts shadow and all the big and small things.

I seek Your nearness by means of the first person whom You have crowned with the crown of glory, and have adorned him with a spiritual nature, who is Your apparent Proof among Your creations, and Your trusted one upon Your servants, Your Prophet, Mohammad (peace be upon him and his Progeny),

and I have chosen such a person as my intercessor who is the bearer of Prophet’s Light, and who presented the hidden secret of his holiness in the most eloquent way, the Chief of all the successors and the Imam of the Pious, the ruler of the religion, the leader of the bright-faced men, and the father of all the noble Imams, Ali bin Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him.

And I seek Your nearness by means of the best of the bests, the origin of the illuminating lights, the human-like nymph (Hawra), the Batool, the Pure, Lady Fatima az-Zahra; and I chose the two lights of the Prophet’s eye as my intercessors, the fruit of Lady Batool’s heart, the two Sayyids, the two Imams, Abu Mohammad al-Hasan, and Abu Abdullah al-Husain, and by the means of Sajjad, the beauty of worshippers, the one with patches (on the place of prostration), the monk of Arabs, Ali bin al-Husain,

and I seek You nearness through the protector and the knower, whom You have made the treasurer of all the earth’s treasures, the merciful father in whose hands lies the control of all the relief and narrowness, the Owner of Leadership and noble kingdom, the one who will uproot the cursed tree, who spoke to the people in his cradle, the leader towards the bright paths of excellence, who is concealed from the sights, who is present in the cities, but hidden from the eyes, and present in the thoughts, the remnant of the chosen ones, the inheritor of Zulfiqar, the one who will appear in the curtained ‘house of Allah’, the knower, the purified, Mohammad bin al-Hasan, may the best of greetings, absolute peace and greatest blessings be upon them.

O’ Allah, these noblemen are my shelters and means for presenting my requests in Your Threshold, bless them with a blessing whose quantity is not known to anyone except You, and the best of people’s effort cannot reach the least of its extent, fulfill my noblest of thoughts by their means, and fulfill my desires.

O’ Lord! No pillar is stronger than You for me, thus I seek shelter in this strong base, and no speech is more noble and firm than invocating You, thus I seek you with the best speech, and there are no intercessors for me who are better than them (Mohammad and his Progeny), thus I come to you through a desirable means; I have sought shelter in You, and have relied upon You for the fulfillment of my demands, and have called You the way You commanded me, then accept me as You have Promised.

O’ Lord! Does anything remain except responding to my desires and having mercy upon my weeping and moaning? O’ He except whom there is no God, O’ He who answers the distressed when he calls Him, O’ Reliever of Jacob’s Ayyoob’s sorrow, O’ He who had mercy upon Yaqoob’s tears, forgive me and have mercy upon me, help me against the nation of oppressors, and make me victorious as You are the best victory-giver, and be kind to me,

O’ Lord, and to all the faithful men and women, O’ Possessor of great Power, through Your Mercy, O’ the Most Merciful of all the Merciful, and Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. May Allah bless our Master, Mohammad, the Prophet, and his purified Progeny. [2]

THE INCIDENT OF THE SUPPLICATION OF ABARAAT At the end of his book ‘Minhaj us Salah’, Allama Hilli (R.A.) writes about the supplication of Abaraat: This is a famous supplication that has been narrated from Imam Sadiq (A.S.). Sayyid Razi ud Deen Mohammad bin Mohammad bin Mohammad al-Aavi (R.A.) narrates a famous incident regarding this supplication, which is mentioned by one of the scholars in the footnotes of this supplication:
Fakhrud Deen Mohammad bin Sheikh Jamal ud Deen narrates from his honorable father, who narrates from his grandfather Yusuf, who was a jurisprudent, who narrates form the same Razi ud Deen that he said:
He was captured for a long period of time in the prison of one of the commanders of Sultan Jarmaghoon, and was living in extreme sufferings and hardships. Then one night, he witnessed the successor of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.), i.e. Imam Mahdi (A.S.), in his dream and requested before him with tears: O’ my Master! Intercede in the Holy Threshold of Allah for my deliverance from the hands of this tyrant.
His holiness said: Recite the supplication of Abaraat. He asked: What is the supplication of Abaraat?
He said: It is there in your book ‘Misbah’.
I asked: O’ my Master! It is not written in my book ‘Misbah’.
He said: Have a look in the book, you will find it.
He woke up from his sleep and offered the Morning Prayer. Then he opened his book ‘Misbah’ and found that between the pages of the book, a page has been placed on which the supplication of Abaraat has been written; he recited the supplication forty times.

The Commander had two wives. One of them was intelligent and had a nice perspective about the affairs, and this wife herself was reliable in the eyes of the commander.
The Commander went to her on her day. She told him: Have you captured one of the sons of Imam Ali (A.S.) in your prison?
He asked: Why do you ask such a question?
She said: I saw a man whose face illuminated like the sunlight, he caught my neck with two fingers and said: I see that your husband has imprisoned one of my sons, and makes him suffer for food and water?
I asked: Who are you, O’ my Master?
He said: I am Ali bin Abi Talib (A.S.). Tell your husband that if he doesn’t release my son, I will surely ruin his house.
This dream had an immense effect on the ruler, he said: I am unaware of this case; then he called for his representatives and asked: Have you imprisoned anyone?
They said: That Alavi old man whose imprisonment you had ordered.
He said: Release him and give him a horse for a ride and also guide him through the way so that he returns to his house. (End of the incident)

Ali bin Taoos (R.A.) writes at the end of his book ‘Muhaj ud Da’waat’: One among those incidents is the astonishing incident narrated to me by my dear friend, Mohammad bin Mohammad bin Qazi al-Aavi (May Allah exceed his good fortune and give him the best fate).

The incident was as follows:
An accident occurred in his life, as a result of which he found this supplication written on a few papers and placed in his book (whereas he hadn’t placed those papers in his book). He copied from those pages and after rewriting, he lost the original copy.
In the continuation, he wrote this supplication and mentioned that there is another manuscript narrated from a different way, whose text differs from this manuscript.[1]
