Genie and Sorcery is the revised and enlarged edition of Wonder Acts, Magic, and Sorcery published by our Trust in 1973.
In compiling this revised and enlarged edition, materials from the following have been added: An Article from Ghandni-e-lslam of November 1944 under the title Islam and Jadoo, an article on Hamzaad from daily Millat dated 17-3-75, an article Jinn and Jadoo written by Maulana Jauhar Saheb, Traditions from al-Makaasib, Iran and Safinatul Behaar, Iran.
The compilers are also indebted to Maulana Syed Muhammad Jafar Zaidi, Mujtahid, Pesh Imam of Shia Jamia Masjid, Lahore, and Maulana Syed Ibne Hasan Rizvi, Mujtahid, Peshnamaz Kharadar Masjid, Karachi, for their valuable suggestions and their very kindly going through the manuscript and improving it thereby for which we owe gratitude.
Sorcery is infidelity. Its existence and that of Jinn is proved by the verses of Holy Quran. To take shelter of sorcery, soothsayers, and fortunate tellers is nothing short of weakness in faith. The Westerners due to their progress and advances in the field of material world have turned away their attention from it but Muslims of India and Pakistan are still after achieving its knowledge. The names of Muhammad Ali Jinni and others possessing super-human powers are well-known and their magical tricks not only make the observers spell-bound but also awakens the dead belief of the students in sorcery. Holy Quran in clear words prohibits its followers to practise sorcery at the same time makes them believe in its existence. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said:
He who confirms the statement of a soothsayer, Magician or fortune teller, is a disbeliever of what has been revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) Allah is the Knower of the manifest and of the Unseen none else can know the Unseen.
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) says:
Doa (invoking Allah) is the sure weapon of a believer. Allah says: (O Muhammad!) Verily I am nigh; answer the prayer of the supplicant when he beseeches Me.[1]
A believer says to another believer: I entrust my affair to Allah. Allah sees well (His) servants.[2] Instead of emptying your pocket of the hard earned money and filling those of wily persons, offer sadqah (charity), for charity wards off evil. The wonder acts are sometimes performed through the agency of some beings known as Mowakkals. They are good as well bad for beneficial or harmful purposes. It is difficult to maintain once they are under control. The act of subjugating Mowakkals is not easy and not within the reach of every one. To have faith in soothsayer, magician, astronomer and in person carrying out wonder acts is a definite sign of weakness of faith. Results of black magic are terrific and money earned by magic is not enjoyed by the magician. In the end to recapitulate the substance of the preface and of the book as advice to all Muslims in general and our readers in particular who should carry out the commandments of the Shariat and remain aloof from its prohibitions, entrust all your affairs to Allah the Omnipotent for He is over everything Powerful. There is no might and power but with Him. Beseech Him. He will surely answer your prayers for anything that is lawful and that which will benefit you, seek His guidance and He will guide you.

28th December 1975
The Trustees of the Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust have undertaken to present to the general public good reading matter, suited to their physical, mental, moral and spiritual needs. The sensational pornographic reading material that goes by the name of literary production in the market has served to vitiate the whole social milieu, so that the restraints on social conduct are ever-more being relaxed, with resultant indiscipline in the home atmosphere, no less than in the wider fields of human activities outside the dome. If such a situation is allowed to go on flourishing unchecked a veritable hell on earth is the natural outcome, as we are witnessing in the waves of crime sweeping over some of the so-called civilised countries of the West which are already affecting us. Back To Religion is now the watch-word of the saner elements among them. It is with this sense of perturbation that the trustees have embarked on the venture of publishing books, which are calculated to offset the baneful effect of low-grade, anti-social forms of reading material and to inculcate a taste for and appreciation of sound and healthful mental food.
No commercialisation is aimed at by this venture, as would be apparent to even the most superficial observer, from the standard of prices of the books, which are fixed below the actual cost and that too, because free distribution of books depreciates the worth of the same in the eyes of the general reading public and are also waste.
The Trustees are conscious of the fact that in spite of all precautions on their part to avoid errors if something goes amiss in the form of errors of judgement involuntarily for no one can be in a position to comprehend the entire field of knowledge on any subject. Of one thing they can assure the discreet readers, to wit, that the material for reading is being presented with the best of intentions for the benefit of the public and for the pleasure of the Almighty Allah. If any reader finds anything which contradicts this objective, his observations in this behalf shall receive the maximum possible care to redress any remissness that may be pointed out as having crept into the reading matter with the best of wishes for the reader, we remain.
There are many Wonder Acts performed by various scholars. It is said that we should not be fooled by even the Wonder Acts. It is not necessary that only the true followers can demonstrate wonder acts but even the Kafir by putting his spirit in trouble and by doing certain actions can also demonstrate Wonder Acts. God will not bless him on the day of judgement but given the rewards in this very world. The truth is not proved by doing certain acts (for the worldly gains), by putting exertion on the spirit and so we should not get fooled by such deeds. It is said that in some places in India they stand with the wet clay in the palm with seeds in it in front of the idol. They stand in that manner for a long time and when the seeds germinate in a plant then the desire is attained. They think that their idol has fulfilled their wishes, which is not so. Many stop their breath or in the whole night breathe just once or twice and hence practise abstinence. The uncle of the writer of Qasasul Ulema described an incident as follows:
I went for the pilgrimage of Imam Reza (a.s.) and stayed there for some time. I saw a mendicant who knew the art of Taiul Arz (i.e. of covering long distances in short time as travelling fifty miles on one hour). I became friendly with him and requested him to teach me that art. He declined. On further insistence he replied: You cannot learn this wonder act and you are not capable of it. At last on my further insistence he agreed to teach me that Wonder Act, provided I agreed to abide by two conditions:
1. That I will not accept Imam Reza (a.s.) as Imam.
2. That I will not pray to the Almighty for one week.
I agreed to abide by the two conditions and then I returned to my place. I thought to myself that to call an Imam the Imam is a matter of heart. Although I have agreed not to accept Imam Reza (a.s.) as the Imam but I still accept him as the Imam in my heart and that mendicant cannot find out what is in my heart I will also pray inside my house after closing all doors and tell that mendicant that I did not pray. Making this resolve, I started to pray. After ablution that mendicant came at that moment and said, Did I not say that you are not capable of learning? He then went away and was never seen again. This shows that by exhibiting such Wonder Acts, bonafides cannot be proved.
The compiler says that it is not quite improbable that the mendicant was a devil and for leading him astray that he took vows from that man. He should have told that mendicant that he was not a mendicant but devil. I do not want to learn such Wonder Acts at the cost of my faith.
Another story is narrated to prove that Wonder Acts manifested by one do not prove him to be right or just. In the times of Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) a man came from Hindustan. He could tell what the other person was hiding in his hands. This news reached Imam Jafar e-Sadiq (a.s.) and he summoned him. Hiding something in his hand, the Imam asked, Say what is in my hand? After thinking and meditating for some time he replied: Such and such thing is in your hand. His guess was correct and the Imam (a.s.) confirmed his answer. Then Imam (a.s.) said that once again he would hide something in his hand saying this the Imam (a.s.) put his hand out of his window for a while, then pulled it back and inquired as to what was in his hand?
He mediated and thought but he could not guess what the Imam had in his hand. After a long time of mediating he said that on such and such island in India such and such bird has an egg missing from its nest. Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) opened his hand and said: Your guess is correct. Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) then inquired: From where did you learn this art. He replied: I act contrary to what my soul tells me, and by acting in this manner I have mastered this art.
Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) asked: Does your soul advocate Islam or Paganism? He replied, Paganism. Imam (a.s.) said: In this matter why do not you go against your soul? He said: I will go against my soul even in this matter and embrace Islam. Saying this he became a Muslim.
Imam asked him if he could still guess anything? He replied in negative. Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) said that, You are right, because before you embraced Islam you had been blessed with this art as a reward to your spirit and devotion because you would not have been rewarded on the day of Judgement. But now you are a Muslim. God has reserved the requital for the Day of Judgement and you will be rewarded there so, now your power is gone. Materially he gained the world-fame and money but spiritually he lost his Hereafter.
Objection has been raised in this connection that why he was punished by God after he embraced Islam by taking away his power. He should, on the other hand, have been rewarded by God and should have increased his power, because it is stated in Quran that if any one does some good deeds, God awards at least ten times of that good act in this world as well as much more in the Hereafter.
To understand the correct position it is necessary to take into consideration the following facts: -
(1) Every man has been given independence by God to act rightly or wrongly without any intervention from God, after he has been given guidance.
(2) The disbelievers are rewarded in this very world for their good actions (if any); while Muslims are rewarded both in this world and the Hereafter.
(3) There are some acts which have far-reaching effects and cannot be re-compensated adequately in this world.
(4) Men are generally misled by wealth and luxuries of this world. Hence God deprives most of His obedient servants from the wealth and luxuries of life in this world.
This is His favour and not a punishment. He knows best as to how He should behave with a particular man.
(5) God has created some such powers in man which can be developed through constant, systematic and regular practice and man can do wonders after developing these hidden powers in him. If a man uses them for a good he deserves good reward, otherwise he is liable to chastisement.
(6) The above-mentioned infidel also developed his will power, but instead of utilising it for good purposes, he used it as amusement, became proud and at last challenged the Holy Imam (a.s.).
(7) He was deprived of that power after embracing Islam because there is no place in Islam for such juggleries and undesirable acts. Islam demands good deeds, purity of heart and piety from a Muslim. If he performs good deeds and is pious, he would deserve good reward in this world and in the Hereafter according to the nature of his actions.
(8) From worldly point of view he lost his power which did not benefit him in any way except that he took pride in his Wonder Act but in the Hereafter he made himself liable to be thrown in the Hell-fire eternally.
Allah has given many powers to the soul and a person who exerts himself and awakens dormant potentialities, can perform such feats that are quite out of the norm. For example, some people are gifted with telepathy, i.e. conveying their thoughts to other. Some can foresee and forecast events of future. These qualities are rare, but cannot be termed as spiritual or supernatural So they should not be confused with Wonder Act or Miracles. Even Wonder Act (Karamat) is not of the status of Miracle. Wonder Acts are gifts of Allah bestowed upon persons who suppress the desires of the self to attain a high spiritual position through devotedness to Allah. Sometimes Wonder Acts are manifested by persons who are not at all spiritual or devoted. Such persons gain their power through some other forces which may be even evil and are certainly not divine.
Miracles are exclusively for Prophets and Imams who were Masoomeen (Infallibles) and were manifested only when proof of Prophethood or Imamate was very necessarily required to be presented.
Wonder Act as stated above, can occur through evil forces even, hence it cannot be a proof of righteousness. It may be sorcery (magic) or influence of some evil spirits. Sometimes it so happens that a person who is not a Muslim, but exercises self restraint and suppresses the worldly desires of the self achieves a state of getting insight of the things and events; this is his worldly reward alone for abstaining from evil and self restraint and suppression of passion. Hence, to differentiate between a true and false Wonder Act, one of the criteria and touchstone is the conduct and personality of the performer of Wonder Act. If he is a devout person, following the True Path of Shariat, the phenomena can be true Wonder Acts otherwise it can be anything but Karamat (Wonder Act). As performed by true Ulemas described in the Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust (Karachi 05-11) in their publication entitled Biographies of the Learned (Ulema).
One of the Trustees of Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust recalls an incident which he witnessed in India in I930s. A friend mentioned of a Hindu who claimed that at times the Spirit of Miran Datar, a famous pious Muslim saint whose Shrine is near Ahmedabad (India), enters his body and then he could walk on fire. The friend forcefully invited the Trustee to witness this phenomenon for himself. He did so and told his friend that it was all false. Because, he argued, how could the spirit of Miran Datar, who was a pious man in his life time, enter the body of a Najas person?[3]
Many a time people get trapped when they find some forecasts and predictions come true and follow blindly such persons and ultimately ruin themselves materially in this world and spiritually in the Hereafter. Such predictions and false Wonder Acts, like stopping trains, throwing away a watch or something out of the window of moving trains and afterwards producing the thing back from the pocket of the owner or someone sitting there, may have been done with the help of evil spirits with whom they have made contact through evil ways and magic which are abominable and not worthy of mention.
Shias believe that there is one and only one way to achieve the pleasure and nearness to Allah and it is the way shown by the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and his Progeny (a.s.).
Shias are not the only sect in Islam who believes that Salvation is only through Shariat. A famous Sufi, Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria, whose Shrine is at Multan is a source of solace for many, writes in one of his books that the criterion of a true and false Sufi is Shariat. If a Sufi is a follower of Shariat-e-Muhammadi and guides his disciples to do the same, he is a true Sufi otherwise he is not a Sufi but a disciple of Satan.
Magic is perhaps the oldest attempt of Man at Spiritualism rather pseudo-spiritualism. Religiously speaking, as soon as man descended on this earth, Allah sent His Messengers to call him to recognise the Creator.
But recognition of the Deity means complete submission, without reservations. This is agreeable to the nobler side of the Soul (Nafs-e-Mutmainnah), as it is inherent in the soul to recognise Allah submit to Him and worship Him. But there is another side of the Soul, the baser side (Nafs-e-Ammaarah), the side which inclines towards Satan. This baser instinct is easily misled, and is rebellious. Magic is the attempt of this rebellious side to create a pseudo-spirituality to counteract divine spirituality. It is reported in Tafseer-e-Ayyaashi and Qummi on the authority of Hazrat Imam Baqir (a.s.) that after the death of Hazrat Sulaiman (a.s.), Satan wrote an incantation and buried it with his throne and misled people that powers of Hazrat Sulaiman (a.s.) were due to this incantation. Thus were the people of Sulaiman (a.s.) made to practise Magic
Allah has variously described Magic in Holy Quran.
At one place magic enchantments are called false:
Then to: it (the rod of Moses) swallowed (one after another all) that they falsely demonstrated.[4]
At another place Allah says that Magic is a wrought plan, a craft doomed to fail,
Verily they have wrought by a plan of a sorcerer, and a sorcerer shall not be successful whatsoever manner (of skill) he may come from.
Allah has also defined reciting incantations (wozeefo or mantar) as following devils and that practice of sorcery was taught to the people by the devils and it is infidelity (kufr).
They followed what the devil recite (falsely) against Solomans Kingdom; not that Soloman disbelieved but (it was the devils that disbelieved; sorcery did they teach to man and what was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut.[5]
At another place Allah says that sorcerers do nothing but hypnotize, cast a spell or rather create illusion (bewitch the eye of the people).
So when they cast they bewitched the eyes of the people and terrified them and produced them a great enchantment.[6]
Allah says that sorcery does not profit anyone but gives harm. The practitioners of sorcery learn that they bargain for tortures in the life hereafter by courting it.
And they learnt what harmed them and profited them not; and indeed they knew that he who bought that (art) had not snared in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vice was the price for which they did sell their selves, had they only known (it).[7]
Yet at another place Allah declares that mischief makers will not benefit by their work, and indeed sorcery is dispelled by Allah and can do no permanent harm.
Verily God will presently make it naught; Verity Allah causes not to thrive the work of mischief-makers.[8]
Said Moses unto them, Woe unto you: Forge you not a lie against God; lest He destroys you with His wrath. And fails he who forgets a lie.[9]
Abdullah bin Umar has quoted the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) as having said:
There are certain magicians among my followers. Do not call on them when they are sick, do not offer funeral prayers for them when they die; and do not greet them with salutations when you happen to meet them.
When the people enquired as to who were these magicians the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:
These are those people who commit evil acts and attribute their evil actions to the Will of God saying that they did what they were predestined by Allah to do.
Abdullah bin Abbas quotes the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) as having said:
No one will stand so much condemned on the Day of Judgement as the one who associates God with the evil he does say that he did what he was predestined by God to do.
Magical phenomena are also scribed to the evil spirits that a practitioner conquers over and subjugates. In the opinion of such persons evil spirits are abounding all around us and if one endeavours he can subjugate one or the other of these spirits and can accomplish such amazing and astounding feasts. But one thing is certain and established. These evil spirits cannot harm one who is perfect in his faith.
And created not I, the Jinn and the humans but they may worship Me.[10]
Hazrat Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) has said that Allah did not create men but to know who with proper knowledge, automatically surrenders himself to Him and without knowledge adoration could never in the true sense of it be an adoration. Besides the actual meaning of adoration is not the performance of any rituals or only the few prescribed formal prayers recited by the mouth but the actual surrender of the ego to an individual, disciplining it, to act only in consonance with the expressed will of the Lord, through abiding with His prescribed law. The whole life activity of the individual should be nothing but the fulfilment of the will of the Lord.
This is clearly laid down in 6:l63 Allah commanded His Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
Say! Verily my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death (are all only) for Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
Every word and deed of the Holy Ahlul Bait (a.s.) was generated only from love of Allah. These Godly lives were sent on this earth to serve as models for mankind to be followed as faithfully as possible. If therefore you have love for Allah Allah will protect you from an evil spirit.
They followed what the devils (Satans) recited (falsely) against Solomans Kingdom; not that Solomon disbelieved but (it was) the devil that disbelieved, they did teach sorcery to[11]
but Ibees, he was from (among) the jinn.[12]
Moses said, Nay! Cast you down first. Then Lo! Their cords and their rods seemed to him by their Sorcery as if they were running.[13]
It means that sorcery is nothing but illusion.
(1) The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has been reported to have said:
He who confirms the statement or the word of an astrologer or of a soothsayer is an infidel disbeliever of what has been revealed to the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (s.a.w.a.).[14]
(2) Hazrat Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) said:
An astrologer is an accursed, soothsayer is an accursed.[15]
(3) The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said:
He who goes to a sorcerer, soothsayer or some liar and confirms what he says, is a disbeliever of the book of Allah revealed to Hazrat Muhammad (s.a.w.a.).[16]
(4) Hazrat Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) said:
An astrologer is like a soothsayer - soothsayer is like a sorcerer. And a sorcerer is like an infidel whose abode is Hell.[17]
In the light of the above quoted Quranic verses and Traditions the following conclusion is drawn.
(1) Jinn and sorcery have their existence.
(2) Satan is a Jinn who is a infidel.
(3) Sorcery is infidelity
(4) Believer of sorcery is a disbeliever of what has been revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
(5) A sorcerer is an infidel whose abode is Hell.
In the present age you will find many who practise sorcery and thrive on it, their prey being the innocent people. It is therefore necessary to throw light on this subject so as to save the innocent class of people from the traps of deceivers.
In this context it may be noted that certain people feel that there is nothing like sorcery they deny its existence, though there is a mention of the same in the Holy Quran. There are many verses about it. The story of Pharaoh in the Quran and how it produces its effect, we have mentioned two verses (2:102 and 20:66) above.
Exegetists of the Holy Quran have written on this subject in great detail which we feel is not necessary to reproduce in this small book.
Imam Raghib Isfahani in his book Mufradaatul Quran classifies sorcery as under:
(1) To deceive others so as to corrupt the mind, in the imagination things appear according to the wishes of the performer the sorcerer. There is no truth in it what is seen by the deceived person is not real it is but an illusion as a result of psychological change: The performer a juggler is popularly known as Shobdabaaz and his performance is Shobdabaazi or Nazarbandi bewitchment of the eyes.
(2) To conspire with Satan evil spirit or an infidel Jinn and seek help from them so as to have effects on others.
(3) Those actions which change the form or physical nature e.g. to change man into an ass. There is no reality in what is seen.
Ibne Aseer in his commentary writes:
This was practised by people worshipping seven planets. Towards them was sent Hazrat Ibrahim (a.s.) to falsify their belief. They believed that the seven stars (Planets) regulate the affairs of the Universe and responsible for creating good and evil actions.
Abu Abdullah Razi in his book Sirrul Makhtoom Fee Mukhatabush Shamse Wan Nojum has discussed the subject exhaustively. Hazrat Ali (a.s.) in his speech (recorded in Nahjul Balagha) Sermon No. 77, Vol. I refuting their belief says: It is infidelism to believe that stars are regulators and effective in the affairs of Universe. This he (a.s.) said when he (a.s.) decided to march towards Nehrwan to suppress the rising Kharijites. A person approaching him said: If you set out at this moment then according to astrology I fear you will not be successful in your aim. Whereupon Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) said,
Do you think you can tell the hour when a man goes out and no evil will befall him or can warn of the time at which if one goes out harm will accrue?
Whoever testifies to this falsifies the Holy Quran and becomes unmindful of Allah in achieving his desired objective and in warding off the undesirable. You cherish saying this so that he, who acts on what you say, should praise you rather than Allah because according to your misconception you have guided him about the hour in which he would secure benefit and avoid harm.
Then Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) advanced towards the men and said:
O people! Beware of learning the science of stars except that with which guidance is sought on land or sea, because it leads to divining and an astrologer is a diviner, while the diviner is like the sorcerer, the sorcerer is like the unbeliever and unbeliever would be in hell. Get forward in the name of Allah.
Ibne Aseer then writes:
The Second Type of sorcery comprise of actions performed under the influence of the faculty of thinking (Imagination) and will-power. It is said that imagination and will power has the ability to influence the psyche of others. For instance, a person moves on the bridge constructed on the land but hesitates and becomes fearful to walk on a bridge constructed on a river. The physicians are unanimous that the person suffering from epitasis (bleeding from nose) should avoid seeing articles of red colour and those suffering from epilepsy should avoid seeing things in rapid circular motion. This is so because the psyche is under the influence of faculty of thinking (Imagination). It is for this reason that the wise people are in full agreement regarding the reality of evil eye. And Razi is fully justified in arguing on the basis of the correct and authentic tradition of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). He said: Evil eye has reality if there is anything that can alter the destination it is the evil eye. Razi also says that when you have understood this fact, we can then say that persons with strong will-power need neither instruments nor other means in manifesting their actions. Conversely the souls with weak will-power need instrumental devices in manifesting their actions.
This fact is known by common observation of the soul which when overpowers the body gets absorbed by the heavenly world. That is to say that this soul becomes a spirit (Rooh) which has a powerful effect on the heavenly world. And when the soul is weak it is strongly related to the material world and exercises no effect on the heavenly world. The weakness of the soul can be removed by decreasing the intake of the food, severing relations with worldly people and protecting oneself against pretence and hypocrisy.
In the Third Type of sorcery, help is sought from earthly souls the Genie (Philosophers and Mutazalite do not believe in the existence of genie.) These are of two types: Momin Jinn and Kafir Jinn. The Kafirs are known as Satans. Razi says that it is easy to establish connections with Satans as compared to heavenly spirits. Both the jinn and heavenly spirits have great resemblance between themselves.
The experienced and the learned people have observed that connections can be established with the earthly souls by an easy programme of actions (aamal) i.e. amulets (Taveez), Fateela.[18] Privacy during the programme of action is essential. These actions are collectively known as Spiritualism or control over evil spirits.[19]
Masudi in his book Akhbar-uz-Zaman has recorded a saying of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) to the effect.
Anaaq Bint-e-Aadam was first woman who revolted on the earth and planted seeds of sinfulness and impiety. She began committing sins openly and subjugated the Satans to make her devotees. She assigned to them the duty of sorcery. This lady was the first to lay the foundation of sorcery and the sorcerers seek help from Satans who are not visible to human beings, their actions also are not visible. The victims fall a prey to disbelief and begin to visit the sorcerers who make the needy busy in actions in clear contravention to Shariat-e-Muhammadi. This type of sorcery is the worst and pushes the needy into a cave of disbelief (Kufr).
In some groups of Muslims there is a belief that Sufism with all its diverse creeds is a means of attainment of nearness to Allah. In Sufism there are groups who claim certain powers and attributes for their Sheikhs (Murshids.) Some so-called Murshids claim that they have gone so ahead on the way of spirituality that they have attained marefat (cognition) of Allah that they now need not follow Shariat (precepts and practices of Islam) like Namaz (Prayers) and fasting, etc. They are false claimants. An anecdote is related that a man approached a so-called Sufi (mystic) and expressed a desire to come under his tutelage. The Sufi said that obedience of the Murshid without question was the first condition and he would not be able to fulfil that condition. The man promised to obey him blindly. The Sufi told him to offer his Namaz with ablution (Wuzu) performed with urine, for one week and then come to him. He agreed to the condition thinking how the Sufi would know that he did not fulfil the condition. When the man went to the Sufi after one week, he enquired whether he had offered Namaz in the way he had directed. The man replied in affirmative. The Sufi got annoyed and told him he had not done so and chased him out. It can easily he infured that the so called Sufi was a devil because of his liking dirty things.
Tasawwuf or Mysticism arose as a cult in Islam in 1st Century Hijri with Hasan-e-Basri. Its main aim was to gain spirituality through prayers and devoutness. There were many divine persons who really attained spiritual high positions through righteous means. These persons were a strong source of spread of Islam and commanded great respect from masses for their piety. Some designing people imitating such persons cropped up through selfish and unrighteous ways and misled and are still misleading innocent people in the guise of piety and holiness
It has been claimed by mystics that they can control Genie and Muwakkals some sorts of beings entrusted with certain peculiar pious or foul powers and through these media they could perform acts of wonder pleasant and unpleasant, pacifying and horrifying, beneficial and harmful. For this purpose, they make use of Quranic verses and invocations.
Similarly the unbelievers Hindus and aboriginals all over the world where they exist, who resort to the profession of whitch craft claim to perform similar acts by chanting mantars (spells) and invoking their deities which are devilish in nature; while the Muwakkals are for good or can be for evil purposes, the deities are made use of for bad and destructive matters, just as mystics claim to control the Muwakkals the Hindus claim to control Bair.
Again, we find the same thing in Greek mythology. There they have two kinds of gods for good purpose and for evil purpose. They claim to get their work done either for the fulfilment of their desires or for suppressing and subduing their enemies by incantations and invoking the respective gods.
In both the Hindu and Greek mythology, one will find strange, fantastic and purely imaginative forms of their so-called gods or deities.
If seriously considered and logically analysed, it will be found that such Wonder Acts are either mere illusions and hallucination or the psychological effects created by Auto-suggestion or mass suggestion dubbed on the victims.
Magic, Sorcery, Astrology, and some Occult Sciences are in fact attempts of Man towards spiritualism but through means contrary to Divine injunctions.
Allah has denounced Magic as false, wrought plan, a craft and has positively declared that it will not succeed.
Astrology is based on wrong assumptions. The calculations made on these assumptions cannot be relied upon. Moreover, Islam does not allow such attempts to foresee future through so called Occult Sciences.[20]
Subjugation of Spirits, Muwakkals, Bair, etc. is also claimed by some persons, both Muslims and non-Muslims. But on analysis the most that can be said with certainty is that mostly these are illusions and psychological effects.
Muslims of Arabia, Iran and India do believe in the existence of genie and fairy. Hindus believe in Bhoot (male Satan) and Dakan (female Satan).
Satan are the descendants of nine sons of Iblees who is a jinn, Satan is made up of nine parts of spirit and one part of lifeless material. Genies are divided into twelve groups. Three groups are Muslims. Besides these Jinns and Satans there are fairies. Man gets mad if he comes under the shadow of a fairy. There is another type of a fairy known as Biyabaani[21] type.
The evil satanic spirits owing to their hatred towards human beings penetrate the human bodies. These haunting spirits harass the haunted persons by making him/her mad and ill or they demolish or damage the residential premises or take away the property.
When someone becomes speechless, sleep for an indefinitely longer period, becomes mad, goes on nodding his head or moves here and there with uneasiness, the relatives then get frightened and feel that an evil spirit has penetrated his body. An expert in exercising the evil spirit is approached who after asking a few relevant questions, decides the nature of his ailment, if it is the evil spirit he then has to decide the type of incantation.
The Holy Quran in clear words prohibits the practice of sorcery at the same time makes its followers believe in the existence of it. Though prohibited, yet the ladies and even men take its shelter to acquire the love of a person, to do away with the enemy or to create quarrels between two rivals.
For achieving the love or creating quarrels between two rivals, a drink creating love or hatred is given. For the third purpose i.e. do away with the enemy, an image of the enemy is made up of flour of mash dal (arad). In it are pierced needles and is reduced to pieces. An evil eye especially of a person from mean community has evil effects on the person.
The westerners due to their progress and advance in material field have turned away their attention from sorcery but Indian and Pakistani Muslims are still after achieving its knowledge. The names of Muhammad Ali Jinni and Muhammad Chhel possessing super-human power are well-known and their magical tricks not only make the observers spell-bound but awaken the dead belief of the students in sorcery.
There are two types of sorcery. First type is spiritual. Second type is Satanic this it prohibited in Islam.
Spiritual type be classified into (1) Earthly (2) Celestial in nature. It is a science. The learned people in religion learn it for good purpose. The perfection in celestial type lies in knowing thoroughly well the Greatest name of Allah i.e. Ism-e-Azam. Hazrat Sulaiman (a.s.) - the Prophet of Allah was the first person to possess this knowledge. This name was engraved on his ring. It was due to this very name of Allah that he could rule over men, genie, Satan, fairies, atmosphere and the carnivorous and grazing quadrupeds. His Vizier Asif bin Barkhia brought before Prophet Sulaiman (a.s.) the throne of Queen Bilqees studded with diamonds and jewels from Arab (Yemen) to Jerusalem within a wink of an eye through the blessings of the greatest name of Allah (Ism-e-Aazam).
Aadam and Eve possessed the faculty of thinking when they were in the Garden (Jannat), Allah commanded them thus:
And O Aadam! Dwell you and your wife in the garden so eat you to from wherever you desire but go not you two nigh unto this tree for then you two will be unjust.[22]
This verse clearly indicates that both of them possessed in their brain the faculty of thinking and understanding, wisdom to accept or refuse a thing
They were unjust to themselves Allah says:
Get down, some of you (being) the enemies of others.[23]
That is to say human psyche has two parts one working in the atmosphere of Garden (Jannat) and the other in the atmosphere of earth. The latter part from religious point of view is further divided into three sections. Every section is made up of many smaller sections and every section has the capacity to perform its function when developed. The first section of the latter part the part working in the atmosphere of earth, is known as Hamzaad. It has many names Hamzaad, Saayaa, Asseb, Luna, Muna, Teeta, Meeta, Peechhal Pehree, Luna Amaari Inka, Chudel, Bhoroot, Parit Mamu, Allabux, Daayan, etc.
Hamzaad remains nine inches above the human body. Its arms are nine inches above the human arms and so on for every part. This means that a complete human form of light is above the human being and its name is Hamzaad
The Second Section of the three sections of the latter part the part working in the atmosphere of the earth, is under the control of Hamzaad the first section. Hamzaad can be subdued if the section is made active to play its full role. The method to make it active is to strengthen the will-power by concentrating the vision on a point so that the mind remains focussed there at least for one to two hours. Nothing should occupy the mind during this period.
By subduing Hamzaad you can employ to your advantages the satanic forces that are present within us. People can be misled to your advantages. These advantages are of temporary duration they are perishable. The greatest harm of subduing Hamzaad is that it makes you lose your mind that works in the atmosphere of garden (Jannat) it loses its functions No harm other than this could be greater. Secondly the human psyche always remains confused and perplexed it is a prey to evil promptings of Satan. His is a dirty psyche that feels happy and pleased by harming others. In the end there is no advantage but only disadvantage.
(a) Recitation of certain words, beautiful names of Allah, names of Prophets of Allah, Quranic chapters and verses. This is compulsory for those who can recite with correct pronunciations. Refer to Peer Mahomed Ebrahim Trust Publication Doa, Vol. I for beautiful names of Allah; Vols. II, III, IV and V will also help in this regard.
(b) Amulets: This is for those who do not know recitations or they know it but are liable to make mistakes in pronunciations.
(c) Exorcising: The haunting spirit is expelled from the body by an exorcist.[24]
(1) Incantation of Prophet Sulaimans name dispels the evil spirit from the body.
(2) Ihtam Qarshat and Ihtam Fazshat are the names of two Jinn which are recited (differently) to court madness or to remove it.
(3) The name of Prophets of Allah have miraculous effects hidden in them and in those of certain learned godly persons.
(4) Chapters, Verses and words of the Holy Quran have miraculous effects.
(5) Beautiful names of Allah: These are of two types.
(a) Awe-inspiring
(b) Those, manifesting Divine mercy.
Al-Khafeezo the Abaser; al-Aadelo Equitable, al-Qahhaaro The Dominant. These are awe-inspiring names of Allah. Their recitation creates dreadful and frightening scenes.
Ar-Rahmano The Merciful, Ar-Rahimo The Compassionate, al-Ghaffaaro The Forgiver, are names manifesting Divine Mercy. Recitation of these names causes the angels appear in heart-pleasing and beautiful faces and forms.
It is difficult to achieve perfection in the awe-inspiring names of Allah but the incantation of those names more and quickly effective in achieving, the desired wants.
Al-Wadoodo is Allahs name manifesting Divine Mercy. Its recitation as Yaa Wadoodo will make certain spirits and jinn obedient to the incantator for good purpose
Al-Jabbaaro is Allahs awe-inspiring name. Recitation of this beautiful name of Allah as Yaa Jabbaaro over-powers certain spirits and Jinn for bad purpose.
(6) Words Quranic verses and chapters.
You can bring the atmosphere under your control by incantation of some particulars words, verses of the Holy Quran and certain beautiful names of Allah. With the recitation of the same, you can rule, over power people, serpents, scorpion, etc.[25]
The scorpion loses its power of biting by the recitation of 15th and 16th verses of Chapter At-Taareq (No. 86) These verses are:
Verily scheme they (against the truth) a scheme and I too do a scheme.
Amulet of these two verses written in occult numerical figures in particular arrangement and in a particular shape is a means of blessings to the one who wears it on his person.
(7) Ibne Khaldoon referring to Muslim an expert in occult knowledge says. The words Tamaghus, Baaadaan, Yaswaad, Vaghdaas, Nufnaa, Ghaadus, have miraculous power hidden in them. Incantation of these words with full concentration after a bath and before going to bed in clean clothes guides the incantator in his dream as to what he should do to achieve his object. Muslim further says that this incantation makes a personality appear in the vision of the incantator It is this personality who guides him as to the course of action he should adopt to achieve his objective. Ibne Khaldoon states that he was guided in his vision with wonderful instructions to out of the difficult situation of his life. In order to get the desired and beneficial effects of those miraculous words, the incantator has to abstain from eating some articles, of food. These are animal products like, meat, milk, ghee, butter, animal fat, eggs and all articles inciting temper and sex.
Before treating the afflicted through an Aamil[26] - please see that you approach the right person we hereunder reproduce the experience of a businessman.
A businessman suffered heavy losses and his business was going down. He therefore approached an Alim who after some time told him that black Magic has been dug in his country house in a particular room which he pointed out and unless this is removed he will continue to suffer heavy losses.
Businessman told Alim to accompany him and help to remove the black Magic and accordingly a trip was arranged and when the place was dug black Magic containing Kuja (drinking pot) with some papers written were removed to the utter surprise of businessman. Agreed sum amounting to thousands of rupees were paid to him.
Businessman thought that his difficulties would be over but his business as usual went down and there was no improvement.
The above fact was narrated by an Alim that going to persons of such means will never be beneficial.
That Alim had jinn in his control who used to go in advance and arrange things according to his instructions and that Alim instructed Jinn to dig all such things to create confidence in his clients. That Alim is now alive and he is fabulously rich but ultimately he will go to hell and burn eternally.
We have clearly shown most of the persons claiming to ward off effects of magic are either false or designing persons who have only one object in their minds to extort money in the name of curing persons from the evil effects of magic. In fact they fleece innocent people. People are strongly advised not to fall prey to such tricksters and quacks. Authenticity of Taweez and Doas given by them is not known. Our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and the Imams have taught us many Doas which if recited as prescribed, will surely benefit the sufferer of Magic Inshallah.
The following Doa is from Sahifa-e-Kamela, of Imam Zainul Abedeen (a.s.). This Doa is for safety from all ills, witchcrafts, diseases and oppression. When needed, it may be recited after any wajib prayer daily till the affliction is removed. It is better to keep one fixed for its recitation, e.g. if one starts to recite after Morning Prayer till the purpose is served, i.e. the affliction is removed or danger has passed, one should offer two rakat namaz and recite this Doa with intention to offer thanks.

O Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and his progeny.
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
O Lord! Bless Muhammad and his Aal (progeny), and clothe me with Your safety, and honour me with Your safety, and guard me with Your safety, and make me independent with Your safety, and bestow on me as alms Your safety, and favour me with Your safety, and spread out for me Your safety, and make Your safety suitable to me, and do not interpose distance between me and Your safety, either in this world or the next.
O Lord! Bless Muhammad and his Aal (progeny) and grant me a safety, sufficient, healing, exalted, growing, and a safety that would create safety in my body, a safety of this world and the next.
And favour me with health, and security, and peace, in my faith and body; and insight in my mind and success in my affairs; and fear of You and dread of You; and power to perform what You have commanded, or Your service, and avoidance of what you have forbidden me to do.
My God! O Lord! Always give me grace to perform the Hajj and Umrah and to visit the tomb of Your Prophet Your blessings on him, and Your mercy and favours on him and his Aal (progeny) and tombs of the Aal (progeny) of Your Prophet, peace be on them, as long as You keep me alive, in my present year and every future year.
And let this be accepted, approved, remembered by You and stored up by You.
And let my tongue utter Your praise, Your thanks, Your remembrance and a handsome eulogy upon you.
And enlarge my mind for receiving direction (for the acceptance) of Your faith.
And protect me and my offspring from the Devil, the one who was driven away with stones, and from the mischief of venomous and stinging creatures and vulgar and the mean and from the mischief of every obstinate devil, and from the mischief of every malicious king, and from the mischief of the weak and the strong, the high and the low, the great and the small, the nigh and the distant and from the mischief of everyone of the genie or mankind, who insisted upon fighting against Your Prophet and the people of his house; and from the evil of every creature that moves on the earth, and whose forelock is held by You, Verily! You are on the right path.
O Lord! Bless Muhammad and his Aal (progeny), and whoever intends to wrong me, turn him away from me and ward off from me his device, and repel from me his evil, and put (the noose of) his fraud around his own neck, and place before him a barrier till You make blind his eyes from seeing me, and deafen his ears that he may not hear of me, and lock up his mind when about to think of me, and render his tongue dumb concerning me and crush his head, disgrace his dignity, and humble his neck, and demolish his greatness, and render me safe from all his mischief, evil, backbiting, tale bearing, slander, envy, malice, toils, traps and his foot soldiers and cavalry.
Verily, You are possessor of glory and power!
O Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and his progeny. Aameen.

Who honoured him with His communion, Who prevailed with Moosas rod over those who wrought fraud with magic against Moosa (a.s.) and Who retransformed it into a serpent, after transforming it to its original state, Who got the falsehood of the liars swallowed up. Who reduced to naught the craft of the magicians, and O You Who nullified the mischief of the mischief mongers, whoever vexes me with magic, or inflicts harm on me intentionally or otherwise, whether I know about it or not, whether I am afraid of it or not. With heavenly means cut off his action, till it is warded off from me without being executed without being harmful to me, and without having malevolent effect on me.

This Amal is equally useful to get rid of any insurmountable difficulty (and also to pray 730 times after 2 Rakat Namaz) in which case, the recital to be with a special self-discipline: -
1. Avoid all kinds of animal food.
2. The recital to be at a fixed time after midnight with 2 (two) Rakat Namaz.
3. Self being fed with food legally earned.
4. This Amal will be done for forty days.
5. Sadat to be fed or cash given, if Sadat not available then Namazi.

Verily your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself upon the Arsh (throne). He throws the veil of night over the day, which pursues it incessantly, and the sun and the moon and the stars, made (absolutely) subservient to His command; Be it known (that) His is the creation and the command; Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
Call you on your Lord, humbly and secretly; Verily loves not Allah the transgressors. And make you not mischief in the earth after its reformation, and call you on Him fearing (His wrath) and Hoping (for His mercy), verily the Mercy of Allah is well-nigh unto those who do good.[30]
O Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and his progeny. Aameen.

Said unto them Moses! Cast you down what you have to cast.[36]
So when they had cast down (their rods and cords) said Moses (unto them) what you have brought of sorcery! Verily God causes not to thrive the work of the mischief makers. And God will prove the truth to be the truth by His words, though the guilt ones be averse (to it).[37]
And (then) will We proceed to what they have wrought of deeds, and We will render them like to the dust scattered in air.[38]
Nay! We hurl truth upon falsehood, that it crushes its head, and lo it vanishes; and woe to you for what you describe (of God).[39]
And cast down what is in your right hand; it shall swallow up what they have wrought. Verily they have wrought by the plan of a sorcerer shall not be successful whatsoever manner (of skill) he may come from. Then fell down the sorcerers prostrating (in obeisance) they said: We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Musa![40]

And you were not on the Western side (of Mount Sinai) when passed We to Moses the Commandment, nor were you one of the (eye) witnesses. Get out from it by the might of Allah. O the accursed one! By the fear of awe of Allah the Lord of worlds, get out from it or else you will be one of the imprisoned ones. Get out from it for it does not befit you to behave proudly therein. Get out; verily you are of the despised ones. Get out of this (state), despised, driven away and accursed in the manner We cursed the people of Sabath; and (know you that) the Command of God is ever executed.
O Soora the stinking! Get out, O Soora! Get out - here is the fortress of the most excellent hidden name of God - O Tataroon Taroon Maraaoon! Blessed be God, the best of the Creators.
O Haya! O Haya! for the sake of the name of self subsisting God which is written on the forehead of Israafeel, get away, from person wearing this amulet, whoever you may be from genie or a fairy, or a satanic male or female spirit, accompanying since the birth of this person a sorcerer or a sorceress, a ghost or a female demon or a conjurer used to nonsensical mischief with the sons of Aadam and daughters of Eve.
There is no might or power but with God the Sublime and Majestic. May God bless Muhammad and all his purified, holy and infallible progeny.
The techniques of subduing or overpowering the evil spirits or genie could be learnt from Bhuvas or aamils. These persons are expert in this art. He who wants to learn it should maintain perfect (religious) cleanliness and purity. For internal purity one has to observe fasts for a number of days and recite certain doas and beautiful names of Allah. He has to adhere certain restrictions in his daily food and learn certain numbers of occult nature. He has to study the effects of stars and has to pass most of his time in recitations of religious nature. It is usually the Syed and religiously learned people who learn the art of exorcizing the evil spirits.
It is usually the programme of forty days of incantation of prescribed words or verses or chapters of the Holy Quran in order to become a qualified Aamil. The prescribed words or verses or chapters of the Holy Quran are to be recited daily at a fixed clean and isolated place. The number of daily recitations is also fixed. If someday the fixed time is missed the programme is to be restarted afresh and to be reckoned as the first day. Benzoin and other types of incense are to be ignited at the time of incantation to make the surrounding fragrant. He should keep himself and his clothes pure and clean. The jinn who come under the control of the prescribed recitation try to prevent the completion of the programme of forty days by appearing before the incantator in a very dreadful and frightening figure. The incantator gets mad if he gets frightened and gives up the incantation. He passes the rest of the life in madness or gets affected by paralysis or some other ailment which makes him disabled for the rest of his life no medicine or treatment can cure him of his disability.
The jinn try some other devices to enable them to break the programme if the incantator possess strong will power.
Once I was busy incantating for achieving perfection in the art of overpowering the bites of poisonous insects and animals. I suddenly saw my father being brought to me in shackles and fetters by my fathers dead enemy. I then saw that the enemy was commanding my father to bend at the knees. When he did so, the enemy look out his sword from the scabbard to behead my old father. At that time my father conjured me to save his life for the sake of the parental love. My father further said that the enemy entered his house and when he (my father) shouted for help, he was tied and brought before me.
I was on the verge of giving up my incantation and was ready to come out of the circle within which I was sitting busy reciting the incantation to save my old father. But all of a sudden it struck me and I understood the device of the jinn. I therefore turned my attention away from that dreadful scene I became unmindful of it and got again busy with my incantation. The jinn accepting the defeat disappeared.
The same jinn tried another device, I felt that the whole house where I was busy with my programme, was oscillating sidewards and that it would fall down to crush me. But the jinn did not succeed in his device and allowed me to complete my programme peacefully.
The Aamil recites the prescribed formula on piece of sugar and gives it to eat to the one beaten by a serpent or a rabid dog. This treatment has cured many.
Satanic sorcery popularly known as earthly or infernal sorcery is played through the agency of disbelieving jinn known as Satan.
They are Kafir jinn. Student desirous of learning this art has to maintain internal and external uncleanliness and impurity and has to act similarly in his behaviour just as the seeker of heavenly and spiritual knowledge has to maintain religious purity and cleanliness both of body and mind. The incantator loses all the power achieved through earthly and infernal (satanic) knowledge, should he remain clean and pure even for a moment. He takes no bath, applies no fragrance, offers no prayers and performs no deed of virtue and goodness.
During the month of Diwali, in the dark half of the month of Katric the first month of Hindu year and especially on the night of 14th of the dark half of the month of Asso (last month of Hindu year) when dirty jinn (Satan) are all allowed to visit their previous abodes, the seeker of this knowledge dons dirtiest types of clothes, applies bad smelling oil on the body and takes with him provisions of eatables which are unlawful a sharp knife and gugal (a foul smelling gum) for igniting at the time of incantation to subdue the Satan. He goes to a place of cremation of the city, graveyard of mean community or of those given the Capital punishment. There he incantates and draws a circle wherein he sits for further recitation keeping with him the knife ready. As he incantates he goes on throwing black mung. The incantator asks the devil when they present themselves before him on whose invitation they appear, as to what they (devils) would like to eat. He goes on throwing pieces of meat which he had brought with him, if the devils demand it. The incantator has to cut a piece of flesh from his thigh, should one of these devils demand the human flesh. In case he fails to supply him with human flesh the incantator himself becomes a morsel for the devil. In case of compliance, the devil remains obedient to him for one year and helps him in his black deeds.
At times the incantator does not want to risk his life or cut a piece of flesh from his thigh. It is for this reason that he takes with him his pupil or a friend. When the devil demands human flesh he offers the sacrifice of his companion with the condition that the devil should not even touch the companion till he reaches his home. The devil accepts the condition. After the incantator completes incantation, the devil follows his prey to his house. He eats his liver and kills him. The following morning he is found dead with a blood vomit.
Islam advises its followers to remain clean and pure and to have explicit faith in the All-Powerful Omnipotent Allah. It also advises them to remain aloof from such dirty and filthy things. Quran prohibits playing sorcery. It is difficult to gain perfection in satanic knowledge for a person as it is beyond the reach of most people, most of whom are entangled in worldly anxieties. They therefore hardly can spare time for it. Moreover there are greater chances of failures than those of success. The wise perfects his religious knowledge and passes an ideal life, without going into all these irreligious and devilish things resulting in grave consequences. In religion lies happiness and pleasure for the soul.
Scientifically such phenomena of magic and sorcery have not yet been explained and science is at a loss to understand them. Whether in future it will be able to do so remains to be seen.
One explanation has however been given and apart from religious and traditional point of view is a more hypothesis to work on. It is as follows:
Scientists are of the opinion that Man possesses many potential capabilities of which even he himself is unaware. According to them, apart from five senses of Taste, Touch, Hearing, Smell and Sight, there are other senses in the Man which lie dormant. It seems probable because we see sometime a man with such capabilities which seem extraordinary. It is also a common experience that some people can foresee what is going to happen in near future. As one advances in age he develops a capability of judging characters intuitively, though he himself cannot offer any rational reason why he judges one as honest or dishonest even if he is proved correct by later experience.
Intuition itself is a power which varies from person to person and is quite apart from the five senses
Sometimes one becomes averse to some person whom he has never seen before and sometimes likes without any rational explanation. All this goes to show that there are some powers in man that can be harnessed and put to work out of ordinary. People seeing such abnormal actions call them magic. If ever these phenomena are understood they may be promoted to the status of Science.
So it can be one explanation of magic that its feats are accomplished by harnessing such dormant powers of soul intentionally or consciously or subconsciously.
Astronomy is a branch of science which deals with physical nature of cosmic bodies in heavens and universe as a whole. Like other natural sciences it has two aspects, abstract and applied. Abstract Astronomy deals with theoretical side-origin of universe, its nature, chemical and physical; speculation on optimum conditions for existence of life in different parts of universe, etc. etc.
Applied side of the Astronomy deals with the physical observation of the structure of different cosmic bodies through Telescopes, Radio Telescopes space exploration or even actual landing on celestial bodies. This last mode of exploration has yet been possible in case of Moon only.
Astrology on the other hand is pure speculative in nature and is mysticism of a sort. The first premise put forth by its supporters is that stars and planets affect the life of people of this earth. If given a penetrating thought, it becomes obvious that Astrology dates back to the period when people thought the starts to be gods. Assyrians Babylonians and Egyptians did much to perfect calculations based on the movement of celestial bodies.
The basis of this thought, the same premise that stars, gods or no gods do affect the lives of mortals, persists in this 20th century, even though the world has changed. Now modern Astrologers talk about Radiation, Magnetic waves, etc. and harp on the same strings that stars do affect the fortunes of people. The bases of calculation remain the same as worked out five or six thousand years ago. Astrologers think that all planets, 7 in number (now nine) move along a belt called Zodiac. This Zodiac is divided in 12 Houses or Burooj. Every House has distinctive characteristics and has direct link with some aspect of human life, wealth, poverty, children, etc. These stars have been arbitrarily given good and bad attributes. Astrologers have certain calculations according to which they judge a person to belong to some House and predict the main events of his life on a sheet which is called Horoscope.
Whether it should be relied upon or not or it serves any useful purpose? People go after finding out a true Astrologer by spending a lot of money but let us examine to what purpose.
Assuming that one finds out a true Astrologer who correctly tells future, what benefit or loss one derives there from? If the Astrologer forecasts for one that he would become very big person or millionaire within 2 to 5 years or any period named, of course this would be very good news but the anxiety and suspense it would bring, would be terrible and may make the person very unhappy and even drive him mad. He, in anticipation of acquiring position and/or riches may incur debts which may lead him to trouble if the prophecy does not come true or is delayed. In another way if the prophecy is for anything bad, i.e. any calamity, financial or physical i.e. accident within certain period, the person would become unhappy in advance and in trying to avert, which cannot be averted if destined, goes into lot of expenses and anxiety which may also drive him mad besides making him unhappy. It is argued that if one would come to know in advance of any calamity he could do some Sadaqa (Charity).[49] It is true but why Sadaqa should not be given without anticipating any calamity.
Islam does not favour the foreseeing of future. It is totally forbidden to take augury or omen through any medium and believe in it.
The reason for it being forbidden is obvious. If any one presages or comes to know anyhow about future happenings he will either try to forestall, prevent or hasten the same according to his whim, fancy or liking. If he comes to know about coming of any misfortune he will try to avoid it through that calamity might be one, which if happened would have warded off a greater calamity in store for him. By avoiding that lesser evil he might expose himself to that greater calamity about which he knew nothing.
Maulana Jalaluddin Roomi has narrated a story in his great Masnavi. It runs as follows:
A man requested the Prophet of his time to pray to Allah to grant him power of understanding the sounds (dialects) of all the animals. The Prophet tried to dissuade him from it saying that what Allah has hidden from His creatures is not to be discovered, as there may be harm in it. The man insisted. On the request of the Prophet, Allah gave that man the power he sought. On his return, he heard his dog complaining to his cock that he did not get enough food. The cock replied that he should not worry as on the following day a goat belonging to his master would die and the dog would have his fill. On hearing this, the man disposed off the goat and thus prevented the loss. Next day he overheard the dog complaining and calling the cock a liar. The cock replied that he was not a liar. The goat did die but the master was shrewd and sold off the goat which died in the house of the new owner. But the dog was not to worry as now the turn was that of his horse. The man at once got rid of the horse in similar manner. Then the turn of his camel and slave came. When the slave also died in the house of his new owner, the dog said to the cock that it was certainly a liar, as all his forecasts proved untrue. The cock replied that it was not a liar. The master acted foolishly. In fact there were two men in that town and it was ordained by Allah that one of them was to die and for the man owing all these things was to suffer slight monetary loss by the death of his pet goat. He averted that loss by selling it. Then his horse was to die as it was to be that he suffered a loss. He averted that loss too by disposing off his horse, and so was the case of camel and the slave. The man averted those losses by getting rid of them. On the other hand the man whose time was up unconsciously bought all those things which were to die by the will of Allah and sustained monetary losses one after the other. So the fates changed. The man who was to die would now live and the man who tried to change his fate was to die on the following day.
The moral of this story, states Maulana Roomi, is that one should not try to find out what is in store for him in future. If it were the will of Allah to give the power of foreseeing future, He would have bestowed upon him this power. But in some matters ignorance is bliss.
The so-called diviners have their paid agents who indirectly canvass for them and know the desires of the victims and tell them so that when the victims approach them for the solution of their difficulties they foretell them and secure their confidence whereby to squeeze them. One instance may here be quoted that a dismissed Railway Station Master who knew morse signalling, gathered some accomplices and taught them morse code and he himself made his abode on a tree. These accomplices used to sing Bhajans accompanied by tick tick of morse signalling by which they informed him the desire of the victims visiting from whom they first used to find out their desires. Before the victims disclosed their desires he used to tell them their desires. The victims thus had confidence in him and thus allowed themselves to be fleeced. Once a Station Master who also knew morse signalling visited and when the accomplices started informing him morse signalling he understood and he was exposed with disgrace.
But in fact, our Imams (a.s.) have taught many Doas for each and every such need.
Safety from tyrants and enemies; for getting back lost things and persons; for release from prison; for love between husband and wife; for Marriage Proposal; for making turbulent wife obedient; for getting a child for safety of Pregnancy; for avoiding premature birth or abortion; for easy delivery of child; for avoiding early death of children; for ailments of children, such as weaning, weeping and other diseases; for wealth and prosperity; for removing poverty and worries. Readers are advised to see books Doa in 5 Volumes, published by Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust, Karachi - 05-11. They will find Doas for practically every legitimate purpose in these Volumes. In Volume No. V there are Merits of Surahs of the Holy Quran. These merits will tell the reader when and how a surah could be recited for certain purposes.
Readers may also see Mafatihul Jinaan, a collection of Doas and supplications. It is available in Urdu Language, with book-sellers.
Many a weak-minded people, especially women, being the victims of their own whims consider every evil even or misfortune an insinuous act of their enemies on them. Consequently, to find its solution they revert to so-called Palmists, Astrologers diviners and others who claim to (find out divine things through spiritual powers) by seeing Faal. Most of these persons being very shrewd and keen observers of human nature, describe the so-called divination in cautious, obscure and ambiguous terminology, yet so cleverly that the people approaching them unconsciously become their prey. Such diviners are only vile money grabbers. They live as parasites on simple minded people. What is the sense in opening the Faal to know who has done this or that? Who is the cause of mischief? Or for that purpose, what is in store for them in future? Besides this, seeing Faal is haraam (prohibited) in Islam.
Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) said on the occasion:
Do you think you can tell the hour when a man goes out and no evil will befall him or can warn of the time at which one goes out and harm will accrue? Whoever testifies to this falsifies the Quran and becomes unmindful of Allah in achieving his desired objective and in warding off the undesirable... O people! Beware of learning the Science of Stars except that with which guidance is sought on land or sea, because it heads to divining and an astrologer is a diviner, while the diviner is like the sorcerer, the sorcerer is like the unbeliever and the unbeliever is kafir and would be in Hell.
In explaining the above sermon Mufti Jafar Husain Sahib writes that accepting the view or divination is against Quran in which Allah says:
Say; None (either) in the heavens or in the earth knows the Unseen save God.[50]
Secondly that a diviner misconceives that he can know his benefit or harm through knowing future. So instead of turning to Allah in prayer for warding off calamity and seeking his help or for offering thanks for the bounties of Allah he becomes unduly self-reliant and indifferent to religion and Allah. This is a sort of heresy, and such person soon losses hope in Allah.
Thirdly if he proves true and succeeds in his objective he would praise his knowledge and himself and not Allah. He would expect that everybody who is benefited through his knowledge would praise him rather than Allah. This thought is in fact a spelling of heresy and atheism. Hence, the prohibition, strict and total, of all sorts and forms of fore-telling, divination, astrology and prediction. Allah may protect us from falling in this trap of being unbeliever i.e. kafirs.
(1) Ibne Idrees in his book Saraaer has recorded the following narration of Hasheem from the book Mashkatul Mashaaekh written by Ibne Mohaob. Hasheem says: -
I approached Hazrat Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) and said to him that there lived a man on our island, who reveals to us that the stolen goods are with such and such man; similarly he informs us about such other unknown matters. Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) replied:
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said the one who goes to ask about anything about from a magician, soothsayer, or a liar and believes in what he says certainly becomes an infidel and denier of all the Heavenly Scriptures revealed by Allah.[51]
(2) This clearly shows that one should never approach the fortune teller, palmists, astrologers and such others who claim to have power to peep in future and to know the secret as well as hidden matters.
(3) Why is it that the people are caught in the shares of such tricksters and quacks? The answer is very simple. They have lack of faith, trust and reliance in the Omnipotent Allah Who is the Supreme Protector of His creatures. They should entrust themselves body and soul to Allah the Omniscient.
(4) Mark what a believer among the people of Pharaoh says to another believer: -
And you shall remember what I say to you and I Entrust my affair to God. God sees well (His) servants.[52]
(5) Try this infallible prescription of Entrusting your affairs to Allah with full confidence and see for yourself the most wonderful effect. It will save your precious time, it will relieve you from unnecessary anxieties and worries, it will protect you from running from pillar to post in search of pseudo diviners, the tricksters, the quacks, the money grabbers it will unfailingly offer you the most required comfort, solace and peace of mind.
(6) Instead of going to and begging from the parasites in the garb of religion, why not involve implore and supplicate Allah the Omnipresent Who is sure to come to your succour and rescue: Said the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
Doa (supplication) is the sure weapon of a believer.
(7) Instead of emptying your pockets of your hard earned money and filling pockets of the vile money grabber, why do not you give in Sadaqa charity? Said the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
Charity wards off evil.
(8) Do not you know what Allah says in His Holy Book Quran?
Effaces out God whatever He pleases and confirms He (similarly) and with Him is the Mother (Basic source) of the Book.
Janab Hasan Askari Jafari who translated the Nahjul Balagha in English told one of the Trustees of Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust in 1950s in Kazmain Sharif that members of a family were fighting legal cases in court and one group used to lose all cases. This group having no hope of winning in court contacted a Black Magic doer and gave him Rs. 10,000/- to kill the members of the winning group. No sooner he started his Black Magic he got stung by a scorpion and suffered torture. Again he started and fell fracturing his leg. When again he started somebody warned him in the dream that he would not be successful as the other side had something superior for its protection on which he returned Rs. 10,000/- and tried to make friendship with the other side to know what superior thing they had. After making close friendship he found out that their mother used to pray daily Doa No. 23 for Aafeyat (protection) from Saheefa-e-Kamela by Hazrat Imam Zainul Abedeen (a.s.). Peermahomed Ebrahim Trust, Karachi - 05-11 has printed this book in English which contains this and many effective Doas for different desires.
He narrated another incident also in which the effect of recitation of this Doa No. 23 had on the doer of Black Magic that he was attacked by buffalo and ultimately he became mad and dashed his head against a tree and got seriously injured.
In many instances the Black Magic doer and those who pay for making Black Magic suffer terribly in this world in as much as they suffer physically that it would be unbearable to see their suffering. Besides this they lose their ill-gotten money and die pauper. Of course much more terrible punishment awaits them in the Hereafter.
It is therefore best and safest to rely on Allah through His chosen 14 Masoomeem who left for us several Doas etc. for our guidance to obtain solution of our difficulties and fulfilment of our desires with safety and success here and in the Hereafter.
What is the final fate of those who indulge in witchcraft, Sorcery, Black Magic and such other ignoble abominable and mean works? In the life hereafter there is disgracing, debasing and painful punishment which is unbearable. But even in their lives what do they get?
These wicked and vile persons make some worldly fans in shape of money, etc. temporarily but ultimately face the state of destitution and poverty worse than those of the real beggars. They run from pillar to post to get something to fill their belly the hellish pit.
They have to face many a hardship, misery and wretchedness. They get physically deformed-blind, lame, maim, bent like bows, and distorted face features-utterly helpless.
Lie and falsehood, cheating and receiving, cunningness and viciousness become their second nature with them. They are always after simple victims and grab at everything from them by their cunningness and foul, objectionable and questionable means.
They are hated by all and liked by none.
In their old age, they become totally infirm and weak both in mind and physique. They are at the mercy of others.
As a matter of fact ill-gotten money can never benefit its earner. It has a tendency to desert the person who sacrifices his tranquillity, peace of mind and faith in order to acquire it. This rule does not confine to the money earned through witchcraft and sorcery, but holds good to an ill-gotten wealth, be it by usury, cheating, bribery, usurpation, speculation, betting, etc. Such wealth cannot remain with its acquirer. It is a matter of common observation that such wealth is either spent in unethical and immoved pursuits like gambling, debauchery and such other things or on sickness, illness of themselves and their near and dear ones. In short, as is such wealth earned so it is spent. Moreover, if children are brought up on such money, they become generally speaking, unruly and run out of hands. They no longer respect their parents, becomes spend thrift and pass their time in such activities.
It is said that obnoxious diseases overtake them, the people flee from them. The worms germinate in their bodies giving out stinking unbearable odour. None can approach them. They, than long to die but death seem to be farthest off. They wriggle and writhe in extreme pain. There is no peace of mind for them. Their last moment plight sends shudders and creepers to the viewers. They wish they were dead, but they suffer agonies of death for long time. They do not have conscience even to repent for their past misdeeds and finally die an ignoble death none pitying them, none-showing any mercy for them, none feeling sorrow-none weeping.
Let us pray to Allah that He may save us from these wicked people through the intercession of fourteen infallibles (a.s.) (Chardah Masoomeen) and keep us on the Right Path.
Verily, Allah puts His servants due to their bad deeds on trial by decreasing the production of fruits, by stopping benedictions and by sealing the treasures of virtues so that the penitent may seek penitence, abstainer may abstain, rememberer of Allah may remember Him and the solicitor of lesson may learn.
