Evil Repelling prayers

This section comprises a number of brief supplicatory and evil-repelling prayers

that I have selected from the two books entitled Muhaj al-Da`aw�t and al-Mujtan� compiled by Sayyid Ra�� al-D�n Ibn ��w�s.

First: Imam M�s� ibn Ja`far (`a) is reported to have quoted the Holy Prophet (�) as instructing Imam `Al� (`a) to say this supplicatory prayer whenever a hardship would bother him:

Imam Zayn al-`�bid�n�s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Third: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam `Al� ibn al-�usayn Zayn al-`�bid�n (`a):

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ	bismill�hi wa bill�hi	In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I put my trust).
سَدَدْتُ افْوَاهَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ	sadadtu afw�ha aljinni wal-insi	I shut the mouths of jinn, human beings,
وَٱلشَّيَاطِينِ وَٱلسَّحَرَةِ وَٱلابَالِسَةِ	walshshay��ni walssa�arati wal-ab�lisati	devils, sorcerers, demons,
مِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ	min aljinni wal-insi	both jinn and human beings,
وَٱلسَّلاَطِينِ وَمَنْ يَلُوذُ بِهِمْ	walssal��ni wa man yal�dhu bihim	rulers, and their prot�g�s
بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلاعَزِّ	bill�hi al`az�zi al-a`azzi	in the name of Allah the Almighty and Mightiest,
وَبِٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَبِيرِ ٱلاكْبَرِ	wa bill�hi alkab�ri al-akbari	in the name of Allah the Great and Greatest,
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلظَّاهِرِ ٱلْبَاطِنِ	bismill�hi al��hiri alb��ini	and in the name of Allah that is evident, immanent,
ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ٱلْمَخْزُونِ	almakn�ni almakhz�ni	hoarded, and stored,
ٱلَّذِي اقَامَ بِهِ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلارْضَ	alladh� aq�ma bih� alssam�w�ti wal-ar�a	and by which Allah has established the heavens and the earth
ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ ٱلْعَرْشِ	thumma istaw� `al� al`arshi	and then prevailed on the Throne.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	�In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
�وَوَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمَا ظَلَمُوٱ	wa waqa`a alqawlu `alayhim bim� �alam�	And the word shall come to pass against them because they were unjust,
فَهُمْ لاَ يَنْطِقُونَ.�	fahum l� yan�iq�na	so they shall not speak.�
�قَالَ ٱخْسَئُوٱ فِيهَا وَلاَ تُكَلِّمُونِ.�	q�la ikhsa'� f�h� wa l� tukallim�ni	�He shall say: Go away into it and speak not to Me.�
�وَعَنَتِ ٱلْوُجُوهُ لِلْحَيِّ ٱلْقَيُّوْمِ	wa `anat alwuj�hu lil�ayyi alqayy�mi	�And the faces shall be humbled before the Living, the Self-subsistent Allah,
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْماً.�	wa qad kh�ba man �amala �ulman	and he who bears iniquity is indeed in a failure.�
�وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلاصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ	wa khasha`at al-a�w�tu lilrra�m�ni	�And the voices shall be low before the Beneficent Allah
فَلاَ تَسْمَعُ إِلاَّ هَمْساً.�	fal� tasma`u ill� hamsan	so that you shall not hear aught but a soft sound.�
�وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ اكِنَّةً انْ يَفْقَهُوهُ	wa ja`aln� `al� qul�bihim akinnatan an yafqah�hu	�And We have cast veils over their hearts lest they understand it
وَفِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْراً.�	wa f� �dh�nihim waqran	and a heaviness into their ears.�
�وَإِذَا ذَكَرْتَ رَبَّكَ فِي ٱلْقُرْآنِ وَحْدَهُ	wa idh� dhakarta rabbaka f� alqur'�ni wa�dah�	�And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur'�n
وَلَّوَْٱ عَلَىٰ ادْبَارِهِمْ نُفُوراً.�	wallaw `al� adb�rihim nuf�ran	they turn their backs in aversion.�
�وَإِذَا قَرَاتَ ٱلْقُرْآنَ	wa idh� qara'ta alqur'�na	�And when you recite the Qur'�n,
جَعَلْنَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ ٱلَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلآخِرَةِ	ja`aln� baynaka wa bayna alladh�na l� yu'min�na bil�khirati	We place between you and those who do not believe in the hereafter
حِجَاباً مَسْتُوراً.�	�ij�ban mast�ran	a hidden barrier.�
�وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِ ايْدِيهِمْ سَدّاً	wa ja`aln� min bayni ayd�him saddan	�And We have made before them a barrier
وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدّاً	wa min khalfihim saddan	and a barrier behind them,
فَاغْشَيْنَاهُمْ فَهُمْ لاَ يُبْصِرُونَ.�	fa'aghshayn�hum fahum l� yub�ir�na	then We have covered them over so that they do not see.�
�الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَىٰ افْوَاهِهِمْ	alyawma nakhtimu `al� afw�hihim	�On that day, We will set a seal upon their mouths,
وَتُكَلِّمُنَا ايْدِيهِمْ.�	wa tukallimun� ayd�him	and their hands shall speak to Us.�
�فَهُمْ لاَ يَنْطِقُونَ.�	fahum l� yan�iq�na	�So, they shall not speak.�
�لَوْ انْفَقْتَ مَا فِي ٱلارْضِ جَمِيعاً	law anfaqta m� f� al-ar�i jam�`an	�Had you spent all that is in the earth,
مَا الَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ	m� allafta bayna qul�bihim	you could not have united their hearts,
وَلَكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ الَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ	wa l�kinna all�ha allafa baynahum	but Allah united them.
إِنَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ.�	innah� `az�zun �ak�mun	Surely, He is Mighty, Wise.�
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ	wa �all� all�hu `al� mu�ammadin wa �lih� al��hir�na	May Allah bless Mu�ammad and his immaculate Household.

Imam Ja`far al-��diq�s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Fourth: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam Ja`far ibn Mu�ammad al-��diq (`a):

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
يَا خَالِقَ ٱلْخَلْقِ	y� kh�liqa alkhalqi	O Creator of the creation!
وَيَا بَاسِطَ ٱلرِّزْقِ	wa y� b�si�a alrrizqi	O Amplifying of sustenance!
وَيَا فَالِقَ ٱلْحَبِّ	wa y� f�liqa al�abbi	O Splitter of grains!
وَيَا بَارِئَ ٱلنَّسَمِ	wa y� b�ri'a alnnasami	O Originator of spirits!
وَمُحْيِيَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ	wa mu�yiyaa almawt�	O Reviver of the dead!
وَمُمِيتَ ٱلاحْيَاءِ	wa mum�ta al-a�y�'i	O Deadener of the living!
وَدَائِمَ ٱلثَّبَاتِ	wa d�'ima alththab�ti	O constantly Firm!
وَمُخْرِجَ ٱلنَّبَاتِ	wa mukhrija alnnab�ti	O Bringer forth of plants!
ٱفْعَلْ بِي مَا انْتَ اهْلُهُ	if`al b� m� anta ahluh�	(Please) do to me what befits You to do,
وَلاَ تَفْعَلْ بِي مَا انَا اهْلُهُ	wa l� taf`al b� m� ana ahluh�	but do not do to me what I deserve,
وَانْتَ اهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَاهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ	wa anta ahlu alttaqw� wa ahlu almaghfirati	for You are the worthiest to be feared and the worthiest to forgive.

Imam M�s� al-K��im�s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Fifth: `Al� ibn Yaq��n has reported that when Imam M�s� ibn Ja`far (`a) was with some of his relatives, he was informed about the decisions that M�s� ibn al-Mahd�, the brother of H�r�n the `Abb�sid ruler, had made about him. He asked his relatives, �What do you think?� They said, �We think that it is better for you to avoid him and hide yourself since no one can be immune from his wickedness.� Imam al-K��im (`a) smiled and quoted this poetic verse as example:

He (`a) then raised his hands towards the sky and said this supplicatory prayer:

إِلٰهِي كَمْ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ شَحَذَ لِي ظُبَةَ مُدْيَتِهِ	il�h� kam min `aduwwin sha�adha l� �ubata mudyatih�	O my God, too many are the enemies who honed their daggers� edge against me,
وَارْهَفَ لِي شَبَا حَدِّهِ	wa arhafa l� shab� �addih�	sharpened the heads of their weapons against me,
وَدَافَ لِي قَوَاتِلَ سُمُومِهِ	wa d�fa l� qaw�tila sum�mih�	mixed for me their deadly poisons,
وَلَمْ تَنَمْ عَنِّي عَيْنُ حِرَاسَتِهِ	wa lam tanam `ann� `aynu �ir�satih�	and kept a sleepless eye on me,
فَلَمَّا رَايْتَ ضَعْفِي عَنِ ٱحْتِمَالِ ٱلْفَوَادِحِ	falamm� ra'ayta �a`f� an i�tim�li alfaw�di�i	but when You considered that I am too weak to bear hardships
وَعَجْزِي عَنْ مُلِمَّاتِ ٱلْجَوَائِحِ	wa `ajz� `an mulimm�ti aljaw�'i�i	and I am too powerless to bear the accumulating cataclysms,
صَرَفْتَ ذٰلِكَ عَنِّي بِحَوْلِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ	�arafta dh�lika `ann� bi�awlika wa quwwatika	You warded off all that from me through Your might and power,
لاَ بِحَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ	l� bi�awlin minn� wa l� quwwatin	but not through my might or power.
فَالْقَيْتَهُ فِي ٱلْحَفِيرِ ٱلَّذِي ٱحْتَفَرَهُ لِي	fa'alqaytah� f� al�af�ri alladh� i�tafarah� l�	You have thus thrown him in the hole, which he had dug for me,
خَائِباً مِمَّا امَّلَهُ فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا	kh�'iban mimm� ammalah� f� aldduny�	making him lose any hope he had in this world
مُتَبَاعِداً مِمَّا رَجَاهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ	mutab�`idan mimm� raj�hu f� al-�khirati	and move away from what he had expected in the Hereafter.
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ ذٰلِكَ	falaka al�amdu `al� dh�lika	So, all praise be to you for that;
قَدْرَ ٱسْتِحْقَاقِكَ سَيِّدِي	qadra isti�q�qika sayyid�	praise that is comparable to what You deserve, O my master.
اَللَّهُمَّ فَخُذْهُ بِعِزَّتِكَ	all�humma fakhudhhu bi`izzatika	So, O Allah, (please) grasp him by Your almightiness,
وَٱفْلُلْ حَدَّهُ عَنِّي بِقُدْرَتِكَ	waflul �addah� `ann� biqudratika	notch his sharpness against me with Your omnipotence,
وَٱجْعَلْ لَهُ شُغْلاًَ فِيمَا يَلِيهِ	waj`al lah� shughlan f�m� yal�hi	and cause him to be engaged with what will inflict him
وَعَجْزاً عَمَّا يُنَاوِيهِ	wa `ajzan `amm� yun�w�hi	and to be too weak to face his rivals.
اَللَّهُمَّ وَاعْدِنِي عَلَيْهِ عَدْوَىًٰ حَاضِرَةً	all�humma wa a`din� `alayhi `adwan ��iratan	O Allah, (please) help me against his animosity with such help that is in progress
تَكُونُ مِنْ غَيْظِي شِفَاءً	tak�nu min ghay�� shif�'an	and due to which my rage will be healed
وَمِنْ حَنَقِي عَلَيْهِ وِقَاءً	wa min �anaq� `alayhi wiq�'an	and my anger will protect me against him.
وَصِلِ ٱللَّهُمَّ دُعَائِي بِٱلإِجَابَةِ	wa �il all�humma du`�'� bil-ij�bati	O Allah, (please) connect my prayer with Your response,
وَٱنْظِمْ شِكَايَتِي بِٱلتَّغْيِيرِ	wan�im shik�yat� bilttaghy�ri	attach my complaint to the reply that changes my state,
وَعَرِّفْهُ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ مَا اوْعَدْتَ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ	wa `arrifhu `amm� qal�lin m� aw`adta al��lim�na	show him very soon and practically what You have prepared threateningly for the wrongdoers,
وَعَرِّفْنِي مَا وَعَدْتَ فِي إِجَابَةِ ٱلْمُضْطَرِّينَ	wa `arrifn� m� wa`adta f� ij�bati almu��arr�na	and show me very soon and practically how You respond to the distressed ones.
إِنَّكَ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ	innaka dhulfa�li al`a��mi	Verily, You are the Lord of great favor
وَٱلْمَنِّ ٱلْكَرِيمِ	walmanni alkar�mi	and generous conferral.

The attendants then separated. Their next meeting was to discuss the news of the death of M�s� ibn al-Mahd�.

The Pocket Patch; Imam al-Ri��s Supplicatory Amulet

Sixth: Y�sir, the servant of al-Ma'm�n the `Abb�sid ruler, has reported that when Imam Abu�l-�asan `Al� ibn M�s� al-Ri�� (`a) arrived in the palace of �am�d ibn Qa��abah to live in, he took off his shirt and handed it over to �am�d, who took it and gave it to one of his she-servants to wash it. Soon after that, the she-servant returned carrying a patch. She gave it to �am�d and said, �I have found this in the pocket of Abu�l-�asan.�

Asking about it, �am�d said to Imam al-Ri�� (`a), �May Allah accept me as ransom for you! The she-servant has found a patch in your pocket. What is it?�

Answering him, the Imam (`a) said, ��am�d, this is a supplicatory amulet that I never put aside.�

Imam al-Ri�� (`a) further explained, �Whoever carries this supplicatory amulet in his pocket, will be saved from tribulations and it will protect him from Satan the accursed.�

Then, Imam al-Ri�� (`a) dictated its form to �am�d. It is thus the following:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ	bismill�hi	In the Name of Allah.
إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِٱلرَّحْمٰنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيّاً	inn� a`�dhu bilrra�m�ni minka in kunta taqiyyan	Surely, I seek refuge in the Beneficent Allah from you, if you are pious
اوْ غَيْرَ تَقِيٍّ	aw ghayra taqiyyin	or impious.
اخَذْتُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلسَّمِيعِ ٱلْبَصِيرِ	akhadhtu bill�hi alssam�`i alba��ri	I seek Allah the All-hearing and All-seeing
عَلَىٰ سَمْعِكَ وَبَصَرِكَ	`al� sam`ika wa ba�arika	to guard me against your hearing and your sight.
لاَ سُلْطَانَ لَكَ عَلَيَّ	l� sul��na laka `alayya	You have authority neither over me,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِي	wa l� `al� sam`�	nor over my hearing,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِي	wa l� `al� ba�ar�	nor over my sight,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ شَعْرِي	wa l� `al� sha`r�	nor over my hair,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ بَشَرِي	wa l� `al� bashar�	nor over my skin,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ لَحْمِي	wa l� `al� la�m�	nor over my flesh,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ دَمِي	wa l� `al� dam�	nor over my blood,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ مُخِّي	wa l� `al� mukhkh�	nor over my brain,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ عَصَبِي	wa l� `al� `a�ab�	nor over my veins,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ عِظَامِي	wa l� `al� `i��m�	nor over my bones,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ مَالِي	wa l� `al� m�l�	nor over my property,
وَلاَ عَلَىٰ مَا رَزَقَنِي رَبِّي	wa l� `al� m� razaqan� rabb�	nor over what my Lord has provided me.
سَتَرْتُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ بِسِتْرِ ٱلنُّبُوَّةِ	satartu bayn� wa baynaka bisitri alnnubuwwati	I block between you and me with the blockage of prophecy
ٱلَّذِي ٱسْتَتَرَ انْبِيَاءُ ٱللَّهِ بِهِ	alladh� istatara anby�'u all�hi bih�	with which the prophets of Allah blocked
مِنْ سَطَوَاتِ ٱلْجَبَابِرَةِ وَٱلْفَرَاعِنَةِ	min sa�aw�ti aljab�birati walfar�`inati	against the sways of the tyrants and the oppressive rules.
جَبْرَئِيلُ عَنْ يَمِينِي	jabra'�lu `an yam�n�	Gabriel is to my right side,
وَمِيكَائِيلُ عَنْ يَسَارِي	wa m�k�'�lu `an yas�r�	Michael to my left side,
وَإِسْرَافِيلُ عَنْ وَرَائِي	wa isr�f�lu `an wa r�'�	Seraph to my backside,
وَمُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ امَامِي	wa mu�ammadun �all� all�hu `alayhi wa �lih� am�m�	Mu�ammad, Allah�s blessings be upon him and his Household, to my front side,
وَٱللَّهُ مُطَّلِعٌ عَلَيَّ	wall�hu mu��ali`un `alayya	and Allah is overseeing me
يَمْنَعُكَ مِنِّي	yamna`uka minn�	to prevent you from me
وَيَمْنَعُ ٱلشَّيْطَانَ مِنِّي	wa yamna`u alshshay��na minn�	and prevent Satan from me.
اَللَّهُمَّ لاَ يَغْلِبُ جَهْلُهُ انَاتَكَ	all�humma l� yaghlibu jahluh� an�taka	O Allah, let not his intolerance overcome Your forbearance
انْ يَسْتَفِزَّنِي وَيَسْتَخِفَّنِي	an yastafizzan� wa yastakhiffan�	lest he may provoke and belittle me.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْتَجَاتُ	all�humma ilayka altaja'tu	O Allah, to You do I resort.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْتَجَاتُ	all�humma ilayka altaja'tu	O Allah, to You do I resort.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْتَجَاتُ	all�humma ilayka altaja'tu	O Allah, to You do I resort.

This supplicatory amulet is connected to a miraculous story that was reported by Ab��l-�alt who, reporting this story, has said: One day, my master `Al� ibn M�s� al-Ri�� (`a) was sitting in his house when a messenger of the ruler, al-Ma'm�n, came to him and informed that the ruler had summoned him to present himself before him. `Al� ibn M�s� al-Ri�� (`a) stood up and said to me, �Abu�l-�alt, it is not usual that the ruler summons me at such time unless there will be a catastrophic matter. No, by Allah! He will not be able to inflict any misfortunate thing upon me, because I carry with me a few words that came to my hand from my grandfather, the Holy Prophet (�).�

I, Abu�l-�alt, then came out with the Imam (`a) to respond to al-Ma'm�n�s summon. The moment Imam al-Ri��s eyes fell on al-Ma'm�n, he said this supplicatory amulet entirely. When he was present there, the ruler looked at the Imam (`a) and said, �Abu�l-�asan, I have ordered one hundred thousand dirhams to be given to you. You may also write to me whatever you need.�

When the Imam (`a) left, al-Ma'm�n looked at his back and said, �I wanted something, but Allah wanted another. However, what Allah wants must be better.�

Imam al-Jaw�d�s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Seventh: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam Mu�ammad ibn `Al� al-Jaw�d (`a):

Imam `Al� al-Naq��s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Eighth: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam `Al� ibn Mu�ammad al-Naq� al-H�d� (`a):

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
يَا عَزِيزَ ٱلْعِزِّ فِي عِزِّهِ	y� `az�za al`izzi f� `izzih�	O Mighty of all might in His almightiness!
مَا اعَزَّ عَزِيزَ ٱلْعِزِّ فِي عِزِّهِ	m� a`azza `az�za al`izzi f� `izzih�	How mighty the mighty of all might in His almightiness is!
يَا عَزِيزُ اعِزَّنِي بِعِزِّكَ	y� `az�zu a`izzan� bi`izzika	O Mighty, (please) make me mighty in the name of Your almightiness,
وَايِّدْنِي بِنَصْرِكَ	wa ayyidn� bina�rika	aide me with Your support,
وَٱدْفَعْ عَنِّي هَمَزَاتِ ٱلشَّيَاطِينِ	wadfa` `ann� hamaz�ti alshshay��ni	ward off from me the inspirations of devils,
وَٱدْفَعْ عَنِّي بِدَفْعِكَ	wadfa` `ann� bidaf`ika	defend me with Your defense,
وَٱمْنَعْ عَنِّي بِصُنْعِكَ	wamna` `ann� bi�un`ika	protect me with Your making,
وَٱجْعَلْنِي مِنْ خِيَارِ خَلْقِكَ	waj`aln� min khiy�ri khalqika	and make me of the best of Your creatures.
يَا وَاحِدُ يَا احَدُ	y� w��idu y� a�adu	O One! O One and Only!
يَا فَرْدُ يَا صَمَدُ	y� fardu y� �amadu	O Unique! O eternally besought of all.

Imam al-�asan al-`Askar��s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Ninth: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam al-�asan ibn `Al� al-`Askar� (`a):

Imam al-Mahd��s Evil-Repelling Prayer

Tenth: This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to our master the Rising Imam al-Mahd� (`a):

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
يَا مَالِكَ ٱلرِّقَابِ	y� m�lika alrriq�bi	O owner of all selves!
وَيَا هَازِمَ ٱلاحْزَابِ	wa y� h�zima al-a�z�bi	O defeater of the allies!
يَا مُفَتِّحَ ٱلا بْوَابِ	y� mufatti�a al-abw�bi	O opener of all doors!
يَا مُسَبِّبَ ٱلاسْبَابِ	y� musabbiba al-asb�bi	O creator of all causes!
سَبِّبْ لَنَا سَبَباً	sabbib lan� sababan	(Please) create for us a cause
لاَ نَسْتَطِيعُ لَهُ طَلَباً	l� nasta��`u lah� �alaban	that we cannot find anywhere else,
بِحَقِّ لاَ إِلٰهَ إلاَّ ٱللَّهُ	bi�aqqi l� il�ha ill� all�hu	in the name of �There is no god but Allah.
مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ	mu�ammadun ras�lu all�hi	Mu�ammad is the messenger of Allah.�
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ آلِهِ اجْمَعِينَ	�all� all�hu `alayhi wa `al� �lih� ajma`�na	May Allah�s blessings be upon him and all of the members of his Household.

Imam al-�usayn�s Supplication in Prayers

Eleventh: Imam al-�usayn (`a) is reported to have used to said this supplicatory prayer in the second units of the ritual prayers:

اَللَّهُمَّ مَنْ اوَىٰ إِلَىٰ مَاوَىًٰ فَانْتَ مَاوَايَ	all�humma man aw� il� ma'wan fa'anta ma'w�ya	O Allah, if someone may resort to a shelter, then my shelter is You.
وَمَنْ لَجَا إِلىٰ مَلْجإٍ فَانْتَ مَلْجَئِي	wa man laja'a il� malja'in fa'anta malja'�	If someone may seek refuge in an asylum, they my asylum is You.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ	all�humma �alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin	O Allah, (please) bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad,
وَٱسْمَعْ نِدَائِي	wasma` nid�'�	listen to my call,
وَاجِبْ دُعَائِي	wa ajib du`�'�	respond to my prayer,
وَٱجْعَلْ مَآبِي عِنْدَكَ وَمَثْوَايَ	waj`al ma'�b� `indaka wa mathw�ya	decide my final return and abode to be with You,
وَٱحْرُسْنِي فِي بَلْوَايَ	wa�rusn� f� balw�ya	and guard me, when I am afflicted by an ordeal,
مِنِ ٱفْتِنَانِ ٱلٱِمْتِحَانِ	min iftin�ni alimti��ni	against failure in the trial
وَلَمَّةِ ٱلشَّيْطَانِ	wa lammati alshshay��ni	and against the influence of Satan,
بِعَظَمَتِكَ ٱلَّتِي لاَ يَشُوبُهَا وَلَعُ نَفْسٍ بِتَفْتِينٍ	bi`a�amatika allat� l� yash�buh� wala`u nafsin bitaft�nin	[please do it] in the name of Your greatness that is admixed with neither infatuating fondness
وَلاَ وَارِدُ طَيْفٍ بِتَظْنِينٍ	wa l� w�ridu �ayfin bita�n�nin	nor assumed and transitory apparition
وَلاَ يَلُمُّ بِهَا فَرَحٌ حَتَّىٰ تَقْلِبَنِي إِلَيْكَ بِإِرَادَتِكَ	wa l� yalummu bih� fara�un �att� taqliban� ilayka bi'ir�datika	and is not charmed by a joyful situation, until You decide to take me to You by Your will
غَيْرَ ظَنِينٍ وَلاَ مَظْنُونٍ	ghayra �an�nin wa l�ma�n�nin	while I am neither accused, suspect,
وَلاَ مُرَابٍ وَلاَ مُرْتَابٍ	wa l� mur�bin wa l� murt�bin	suspicious, nor doubtful.
إِنَّكَ ارْحَمُ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ	innaka ar�amu alrr��im�na	Verily, You are the most merciful of all those who show mercy.

In his book entitled Muhaj al-Da`aw�t, Sayyid Ibn ��w�s has compiled the Holy Imams� supplications in the ritual prayers (i.e. qun�t). However, to avoid lengthiness, I have mentioned the previous supplication only.

The Holy Prophet�s Supplicatory Prayer for Security

Twelfth: This supplicatory prayer is ascribed to the Holy Prophet (�) who used to say it for security against jinn and human beings:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إلاَّ ٱللَّهُ	l� il�ha ill� all�hu	There is no god but Allah.
عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلتُ	`alayhi tawakkaltu	In Him do I put my trust
وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ	wa huwa rabbu al`arshi al`a��mi	and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.
مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّهُ كَانَ	m� sh�'a all�hu k�na	What Allah wills shall come to pass,
وَمَا لَمْ يَشَا لَمْ يَكُنْ	wa m� lam yasha' lam yakun	but what He does not will shall never come to pass.
اشْهَدُ انَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ	ashhadu anna all�ha `al� kulli shay'in qad�run	I bear witness that Allah has power over all things
وَانَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ احَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْماً	wa anna all�ha qad a��a bikulli shay'in `ilman	and Allah has encompassed all things in His knowledge.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي	all�humma inn� a`�dhu bika min sharri nafs�	O Allah, I pray Your protection against the evils of my self
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ انْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا	wa min sharri kulli d�bbatin anta �khidhun bin��iyatih�	and against the evil of every living creature that You hold by its forelock.
إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ	inna rabb� `al� �ir��in mustaq�min	Surely, my Lord is on the right path.

A Proved Supplicatory Prayer

Thirteenth: Anas is reported to have quoted the Holy Prophet (�) as saying: Whoever says this supplicatory prayer every morning and every evening, Allah the All-exalted will order four angels to defend him from the front side, the backside, the right side, and the left side, he will be kept under the security of Allah the Almighty and All-majestic, and no harm can ever affect him even if all jinn and all human beings try to cause him harm:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرِ ٱلاسْمَاءِ	bismill�hi khayri al-asm�'i	In the Name of Allah; the best of all names.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلارْضِ وَٱلسَّمَاءِ	bismill�hi rabbi al-ar�i walssam�'i	In the Name of Allah; the Lord of the earth and the heavens.
بِسمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ ٱسْمِهِ سَمٌّ وَلاَ دَاءٌ	bismill�hi alladh� l� ya�urru ma`a ismih� sammun wa l� d�'un	In the Name of Allah with Whose Name, neither poison nor malady can harm.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ اصْبَحْتُ	bismill�hi a�ba�tu	In the Name of Allah, I begin my day
وَعَلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ	wa `al� all�hi tawakkaltu	and in Allah, I put my trust.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِي وَنَفْسِي	bismill�hi `al� qalb� wa nafs�	In the Name of Allah on my heart and my self.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ دِينِي وَعَقْلِي	bismill�hi `al� d�n� wa `aql�	In the Name of Allah on my faith and my intellect.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ اهْلِي وَمَالِي	bismill�hi `al� ahl� wa m�l�	In the Name of Allah on my family members and my property.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ مَا اعْطَانِي رَبِّي	bismill�hi `al� m� a`��n� rabb�	In the Name of Allah on what Allah has given me.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ ٱسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ	bismill�hi alladh� l� ya�urr ma`a ismih� shay'un	In the Name of Allah with Whose Name nothing can ever harm
فِي ٱلارْضِ وَلاَ فِي ٱلسَّمَاءِ	f� al-ar�i wa l� f� alssam�'i	neither in the earth nor in the heavens,
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ	wa huwa alssam�`u al`al�mu	and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
اللَّهُ ٱللَّهُ رَبِّي	all�hu all�hu rabb�	Allah, Allah is my Lord.
لاَ اشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئاً	l� ushriku bih� shay'an	I do not associate any thing with Him.
اللَّهُ اكْبَرُ	all�hu akbaru	Allah is the Most Great.
اللَّهُ اكْبَرُ وَاعَزُّ وَاجَلُّ	all�hu akbaru wa a`azzu wa ajallu	Allah is greater, mightier, and more majestic
مِمَّا اخَافُ وَاحْذَرُ	mimm� akh�fu wa a�dharu	than what I fear and what I am afraid of.
عَزَّ جَارُكَ	`azza j�ruka	Strong is one who is in Your vicinity,
وَجَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ	wa jalla than�'uka	majestic is the praise of You,
وَلاَ إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ	wa l� il�ha ghayruka	and there is no god save You.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي	all�humma inn� a`�dhu bika min sharri nafs�	O Allah, I pray Your protection against the evil of my self,
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ سُلْطَانٍ شَدِيدٍ	wa min sharri kulli sul��nin shad�din	the evil of all stern rulers,
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَرِيدٍ	wa min sharri kulli shay��nin mar�din	the evil of all rebellious devils,
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ	wa min sharri kulli jabb�rin `an�din	the evil of all obstinate tyrants,
وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَضَاءِ ٱلسُّوءِ	wa min sharri qa��'i alss�'i	the evil of all misfortunate decrees,
وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ انْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا	wa min kulli d�bbatin anta �khidhun bin��iyatih�	and [the evil of] all living creatures that You grasp from the forelock.
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ	innaka `al� �ir��in mustaq�min	Verily, You are on a straight path
وَانْتَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٌ	wa anta `al� kulli shay'in �af��un	and You are the custodian over all things.
�إِنَّ وَ لِيِّيَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي نَزَّلَ ٱلْكِتَابَ	inn waliyyiya all�hu alladh� nazzala alkit�ba	�Surely, my guardian is Allah Who revealed the Book
وَهُوَ يَتَوَلَّىٰ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ.�	wa huwa yatawall� al��li��na	and He keeps the righteous people under His custody.�
�فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوَْٱ فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ ٱللَّهُ	fa'in tawallaw faqul �asbiya all�hu	�But if they turn back, then say, �Allah is sufficient for me.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ	l� il�ha ill� huwa	There is no god but He.
عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ	`alayhi tawakkaltu	On Him do I rely
وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ.�	wa huwa rabbu al`arshi al`a��mi	and He is the Lord of mighty power.��

The Holy Prophet�s Supplicatory Prayer

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِكَ	all�humma inn� a`�dhu bika	O Allah, I pray Your protection
انْ افْتَقِرَ فِي غِنَاكَ	an aftaqira f� ghin�ka	lest that I may be needy while Your riches are there for me,
اوْ اضِلَّ فِي هُدَاكَ	aw a�illa f� hud�ka	I may be led astray while Your guidance is there for me,
اوْ اذِلَّ فِي عِزِّكَ	aw adhilla f� `izzika	I may be humiliated while Your honoring is there for me,
اوْ اضَامَ فِي سُلْطَانِكَ	aw u��ma f� sul��nika	I may be subjugated while Your absolute authority is there for me,
اوْ اضْطَهَدَ وَٱلامْرُ إِلَيْكَ	aw u��ahada wal-amru ilayka	or I may be persecuted while the entire affair is Yours.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِكَ	all�humma inn� a`�dhu bika	O Allah, I pray Your protection
انْ اقُولَ زُوراً	an aq�la z�ran	lest I may say false things,
اوْ اغْشَىٰ فُجُوراً	aw aghsh� fuj�ran	commit wickedness,
اوْ اكُونَ بِكَ مَغْرُوراً	aw ak�na bika maghr�ran	or be seduced to exceed Your limits.

Imam al-B�qir�s Supplicatory Prayer

Fifteenth: Ab�-�amzah al-Thum�l� has reported that he, once, stopped at the door of Imam al-B�qir�s house, waiting for permission to enter. The Imam (`a) then came out while he was uttering something. �Have you heard these words of mine?� the Imam (`a) asked.

�Yes, I have. May Allah accept me as ransom for You!� answered Ab�-�amzah.

The Imam (`a) said, �I have been uttering some words that none says them but that Allah the All-exalted will save him from whatever distresses him, including the affairs of this world and the Next World.�

�May Allah accept me as ransom for you.� said Ab�-�amzah, �Will you please teach me these words?�

�Yes, I will,� responded the Imam (`a), �Whoever says these words before leaving his house, all his matters that concern him will be made easy:�

Imam al-��diq�s Evil-averting Prayer (�ij�b)

Seventeenth: This supplicatory prayer is described as Imam al-��diq�s evil-averting prayer (i.e. �ij�b):

يَا مَنْ إِذَا ٱسْتَعَذْتُ بِهِ اعَاذَنِي	y� man idh� ista`adhtu bih� a`�dhan�	O He Who unquestionably protects me whenever I pray Him for protection,
وَإِذَا ٱسْتَجَرْتُ بِهِ عِنْدَ ٱلشَّدَائِدِ اجَارَنِي	wa idh� istajartu bih� `inda alshshad�'idi aj�ran�	Who unquestionably shelters me whenever I pray for His shelter against hardships,
وَإِذَا ٱسْتَغَثْتُ بِهِ عِنْدَ ٱلنَّوَائِبِ اغَاثَنِي	wa idh� istaghathtu bih� `inda alnnaw�'ibi agh�than�	Who unquestionably aids me whenever I pray for His aid at calamities,
وَإِذَا ٱسْتَنْصَرْتُ بِهِ عَلَىٰ عَدُوِّي نَصَرَنِي وَاعَانَنِي	wa idh� istan�artu bih� `al� `aduww� na�aran� wa a`�nan�	and Who unquestionably supports and assists me whenever I pray for His support against my enemy.
إِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَفْزَعُ	ilayka almafza`u	Towards You is the flight
وَانْتَ ٱلثِّقَةُ	wa anta alththiqatu	and You are the most trustful;
فَٱقْمَعْ عَنِّي مَنْ ارَادَنِي	faqma` `ann� man ar�dan�	so, (please) subdue whoever intends evil to me
وَٱغْلِبْ لِي مَنْ كَادَنِي	waghlib l� man k�dan�	and overcome whoever plots against me.
يَا مَنْ قَالَ �إِنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَلاَ غَالِبَ لَكُمْ.�	y� man q�la in yan�urkum all�hu fal� gh�liba lakum	O He Who has said, �If Allah assists you, then there is none that can overcome you.�
يَا مَنْ نَجَّىٰ نُوحاً مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ	y� man najj� n��an min alqawmi al��lim�na	O He Who has saved Noah from the oppressing people!
يَا مَنْ نَجَّىٰ لُوطاً مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَاسِقِينَ	y� man najj� l��an min alqawmi alf�siq�na	O He Who has saved Lot from the wicked people!
يَا مَنْ نَجَّىٰ هُوداً مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْعَادِينَ	y� man najj� h�dan min alqawmi al`�d�na	O He Who has saved H�d from the transgressing people!
يَا مَنْ نَجَّىٰ مُحَمَّداً صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَافِرِينَ	y� man najj� mu�ammadan �all� all�hu `alayhi wa �lih� min alqawmi alk�fir�na	O He Who has saved Mu�ammad, Allah�s blessings be upon him and his Household, from the disbelieving people!
نَجِّنِي مِنْ اعْدَائِي وَاعْدَائِكَ	najjin� min a`d�'� wa a`d�'ika	(Please) save me from my and Your enemies,
بِاسْمَائِكَ يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ	bi-asm�'ika y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu	in the name of Your Names; O All-beneficent, O All-merciful.
لاَ سَبِيلَ لَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَنْ تَعَوَّذَ بِٱلْقُرْآنِ	l� sab�la lahum `al� man ta`awwadha bilqur'�ni	They have no way to harm whoever prays the protection of the Qur'�n
وَٱسْتَجَارَكَ بِٱلرَّحِيمِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ	wastaj�raka bilrar��mi alrra�m�ni	and prays the shelter of You in the name of Your Names: the All-merciful and the All-beneficent.
�ٱلرَّحْمٰنُ عَلَىٰ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ.�	alrra�m�nu `al� al`arshi istaw�	�The All-beneficent is firmly established on the throne (of authority).�
�إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ.	inna ba�sha rabbika lashad�dun	�Truly, strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.
إِنَّهُ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ.	innah� huwa yubdi'u wa yu`�du	It is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life),
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ.	wa huwa alghaf�ru alwad�du	and He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ.	dh� al`arshi almaj�du	Lord of the Throne of Glory,
فَعَّالٌ لِمَا يُرِيدُ.�	fa``�lun lim� yur�du	and Doer (without let) of all that He intends.�
�فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوَْٱ فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ ٱللَّهُ	fa'in tawallaw faqul �asbiya all�hu	�But if they turn away, then say: �Allah suffices me:
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ	l� il�ha ill� huwa	there is no god but He.:
عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ	`alayhi tawakkaltu	On Him is my trust,
وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ.�	wa huwa rabbu al`arshi al`a��mi	and He the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme.��

Imam al-K��im�s Evil-Averting Prayer

Eighteenth: This is Imam M�s� ibn Ja`far al-K��im�s evil-averting prayer:

تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَيِّ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَمُوتُ	tawakkaltu `al� al�ayyi alladh� l� yam�tu	I put my trust in the ever-living Lord Who never dies.
وَتَحَصَّنْتُ بِذِي ٱلْعِزَّةِ وَٱلْجَبَرُوتِ	wa ta�a��antu bidh� al`izzati waljabar�ti	I pray the immunity of the Lord of almightiness and omnipotence.
وَٱسْتَعَنْتُ بِذِي ٱلْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَٱلْمَلَكُوتِ	wasta`antu bidh� alkibriy�'i walmalak�ti	I pray the aid of the Lord of grandeur and kingdom.
مَوْلاَيَ ٱسْتَسْلَمْتُ إِلَيْكَ فَلاَ تُسْلِمْنِي	mawl�ya istaslamtu ilayka fal� tuslimn�	O my Master, I surrender to You; so, (please) do not disappoint me,
وَتَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَيْكَ فَلاَ تَخْذُلْنِي	wa tawakkaltu `alayka fal� takhdhuln�	I put my trust in You; so, (please) do not thwart me,
وَلَجَاتُ إِلَىٰ ظِلِّكَ ٱلْبَسِيطِ فَلاَ تَطْرَحْنِي	wa laja'tu il� �illika albas��i fal� ta�ra�n�	and to Your extensive shadow do I resort; so, (please) do not throw me away.
انْتَ ٱلْمَطْلَبُ وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَهْرَبُ	anta alma�labu wa ilayka almahrabu	You are the utmost purpose and to You are all flights made.
تَعْلَمُ مَا اخْفِي وَمَا اعْلِنُ	ta`lamu m� ukhf� wa m� u`linu	You know whatever I hide and whatever I do openly.
وَتَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ ٱلاعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي ٱلصُّدُورُ	wa ta`lamu kh�'inata al-a`yuni wa m� tukhf� al��ud�ru	You know the stealthy looks of eyes and what is concealed in breasts.
فَامْسِكْ عَنِّي ٱللَّهُمَّ ايْدِيَ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ	fa'amsik `anniya all�humma aydiya al��lim�na	So, O Allah, (please) withhold the hands of the transgressors against me,
مِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ اجْمَعِينَ	min aljinni wal-insi ajma`�na	including all jinn and all human beings,
وَٱشْفِنِي وَعَافِنِي	washfin� wa `�fin�	heal me, and grant me wellbeing,
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ	y� ar�ama alrr��im�na	O most merciful of all those who show mercy!

Imam Mu�ammad al-Taq��s evil-averting prayer

Nineteenth: This is the evil-averting prayer (�ij�b) of Imam Mu�ammad ibn `Al� al-Taq� (`a):

الْخَالِقُ اعْظَمُ مِنَ ٱلْمَخْلُوقِينَ	alkh�liqu a`�amu min almakhl�q�na	The Creator is greater than the creatures.
وَٱلرَّازِقُ ابْسَطُ يَداً مِنَ ٱلْمَرْزُوقِينَ	walrr�ziqu absa�u yadan min almarz�q�na	The Sustaining Lord is more liberal than the sustained beings.
وَنَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُوصَدَةُ	wa n�ru all�hi alm��adatu	The awning over fire of Allah
فِي عَمَدٍ مُمَدَّدَةٍ	f� `amadin mumaddadatin	in outstretched columns
تَكِيدُ افْئِدَةَ ٱلْمَرَدَةِ	tak�du af'idata almaradati	will frustrate the plots of the hearts of the rebellious
وَتَرُدُّ كَيْدَ ٱلْحَسَدَةِ	wa taruddu kayda al�asadati	and will thwart the trickeries of the envious
بِٱلاقْسَامِ بِٱلاحْكَامِ	bil-aqs�mi bil-a�k�mi	in the name of the Oaths, the Decrees,
بِٱللَّوْحِ ٱلْمَحْفُوظِ	billaw�i alma�f��i	the Preserved Tablet,
وَٱلْحِجَابِ ٱلْمَضْرُوبِ	wal�ij�bi alma�r�bi	the Hanged Down Screen,
بِعَرْشِ رَبِّنَا ٱلْعَظِيمِ	bi`arshi rabbin� al`a��mi	and the Throne of our Great Lord.
ٱحْتَجَبْتُ وَٱسْتَتَرْتُ	i�tajabtu wastatartu	I seek the screen, the covering,
وَٱسْتَجَرْتُ وَٱعْتَصَمْتُ	wastajartu wa`ta�amtu	the shelter, the safeguard,
وَتَحَصَّنْتُ بِـ: الٰم وَبِـ:كٰهٰيٰعص	wa ta�a��antu bi-alif l�m m�m wa bik�f h�' y�' `ayn ��d	and the haven of �ail-l�m-m�m,� �k�f-h�'-y�'-`ayn-��d,�
وَبِـ:طٰهٰ وَبِـ:طٰسم	wa bi�� h� wa bi��' s�n m�m	��-h�,� ��'-s�n-m�m,�
وَبِـ:حٰم وَبِـ:حٰمعسقٰ وَنُونْ	wa bi��' m�m wa bi��' m�m `ayn s�n q�f wa n�n	��'-m�m,� ��'-m�m-`ayn-s�n-q�f,� �n�n,�
وَبِـ:طٰس وَبِـ:قٰ وَٱلْقُرْآنِ ٱلْمَجِيدِ	wa bi�� s�n wa biq�f walqur'�ni almaj�di	��-s�n,� �q�f,� �the Glorious Qur'�n,�
�وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ.�	wa innah� laqasamun law ta`lam�na `a��mun	and �And most surely, it is a very great oath if you only knew.�
وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيِّي وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ	wall�hu waliyy� wa ni`ma alwak�lu	Allah is my guardian, and the most excellent protector is He.

Twentieth: Shaykh al-Kulayn�, in his book entitled Ta`b�r al-Ru'y�, has reported on the authority of al-Washsh�' who reported Imam al-Ri�� (`a) as saying: In my sleep, I saw my father saying to me: Son, whenever you are in a trouble, repeat this saying as many times as possible:

يَا رَؤُوفُ يَا رَحِيمُ

y� ra'�fu y� ra��mu

O All-compassionate! O All-merciful!

Imam al-Ri�� (`a) then commented, �There is not any difference between what we (i.e. the Holy Infallibles) see in waking and what we see in sleep.�

Supplicatory Prayer for Sustenance

Twenty-first: In addition to sustenance, this supplicatory prayer, which is quoted from Sayyid Ibn ��w�s�s book of al-Mujtan�, may be used for other purposes:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ ذُنُوبِي لَمْ يَبْقَ لَهَا إِلاَّ رَجَاءُ عَفْوِكَ	all�humma inna dhun�b� lam yabqa lah� ill� raj�'u `afwika	O Allah, nothing has indeed left for my sins except my hope for You pardon
وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ آلَةَ ٱلْحِرْمَانِ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ	wa qad qaddamtu �lata al�irm�ni bayna yadayya	although I have done things due to which I deserve deprivation of Your pardon.
فَانَا اسْالُكَ مَا لاَ اسْتَحِقُّهُ	fa'ana as'aluka m� l� asta�iqquh�	Therefore, I beseech You for what I do not deserve,
وَادْعُوكَ مَا لاَ اسْتَوْجِبُهُ	wa ad`�ka m� l� astawjibuh�	I seek from You what I do not merit,
وَاتَضَرَّعُ إِلَيْكَ بِمَا لاَ اسْتَاهِلُهُ	wa ata�arra`u ilayka bim� l� asta'hiluh�	and I implore You for what I do not earn.
وَلَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَيْكَ حَالِي	wa lam yakhfa `alayka ��l�	My situation is not concealed from You
وَإِنْ خَفِيَ عَلَىٰ ٱلنَّاسِ كُنْهُ مَعْرِفَةِ امْرِي	wa in khafiya `al� alnn�si kunhu ma`rifati amr�	although the actual knowledge of my manners is hidden from people.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ رِزْقِي فِي ٱلسَّمَاءِ فَاهْبِطْهُ	all�humma in k�na rizq� f� alssam�'i fa'ahbi�hu	O Allah, if my sustenance in the sky, then (please) send it down to me,
وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي ٱلارْضِ فَاظْهِرْهُ	wa in k�na f� al-ar�i fa'a�hirhu	if it is in the earth, then (please) show it to me,
وَإِنْ كَانَ بَعِيداً فَقَرِّبْهُ	wa in k�na ba`�dan faqarribhu	if it is far off, then (please) draw it near me,
وَإِنْ كَانَ قَرِيباً فَيَسِّرْهُ	wa in k�na qar�ban fayassirhu	if it is near, then (please) make it easy for me to reach it,
وَإِنْ كَانَ قَلِيلاًَ فَكَثِّرْهُ	wa in k�na qal�lan fakaththirhu	and if it is little, then (please) multiply it for me
وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ	wa b�rik l� f�hi	and grant me its blessings.

Supplicatory Prayer for repelling the evil of Ibl�s

Twenty-second: This supplicatory prayer for repelling the evil of Ibl�s (i.e. Satan) is also quoted from the book of al-Mujtan�:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ إِبْلِيسَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عَبِيدِكَ	all�humma inna ibl�sa `abdun min `ab�dika	O Allah, Ibl�s is not but one of Your servants;
يَرَانِي مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ ارَاهُ	yar�n� min �aythu l� ar�hu	he can see me from whence I cannot see him,
وَانْتَ تَرَاهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَرَاكَ	wa anta tar�hu min �aythu l� yar�ka	but You can see him from whence he cannot see You.
وَانْتَ اقْوَىٰ عَلَىٰ امْرِهِ كُلِّهِ	wa anta aqw� `al� amrih� kullih�	While You have full power over all of his deeds,
وَهُوَ لاَ يَقْوَىٰ عَلَىٰ شَيْءٍ مِنْ امْرِكَ	wa huwa l� yaqw� `al� shay'in min amrika	he has no power over any of Your decrees.
اَللَّهُمَّ فَانَا اسْتَعِينُ بِكَ عَلَيْهِ يَا رَبِّ	all�humma fa'ana asta`�nu bika `alayhi y� rabbi	So, O Allah, I pray Your help against him, O Lord,
فَإِنِّي لاَ طَاقَةَ لِي بِهِ	fa'inn� l� ��qata l� bih�	for I have no strength to challenge him
وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَيْهِ إِلاَّ بِكَ يَا رَبِّ	wa l� �awla wa l� quwwata l� `alayhi ill� bika y� rabbi	and I have neither might nor power against him except through You, O my Lord.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ ارَادَنِي فَارِدْهُ	all�humma in ar�dan� fa'arid-hu	O Allah, if he intends evil to me, then (please) deter him,
وَإِنْ كَادَنِي فَكِدْهُ	wa in k�dan� fakid-hu	if he plots against me, then (please) plot against him,
وَٱكْفِنِي شَرَّهُ	wakfin� sharrah�	save me from his evils,
وَٱجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُ فِي نَحْرِهِ	waj`al kaydah� f� na�rih�	and make his trickery to be hanged to his own neck,
بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ	bira�matika y� ar�ama alrr��im�na	in the name of Your mercy, O most merciful of all those who show mercy.
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ	wa �all� all�hu `al� mu�ammadin wa �lih� al��hir�na	May Allah bless Mu�ammad and his Immaculate Household.

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ	all�humma inn� as'aluka bi�aqqi mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin	O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad
انْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ	an tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin	to bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad
وَانْ تُنْجِيَنِي مِنْ هٰذَا ٱلْغَمِّ	wa an tunjiyan� min h�dh� alghammi	and to save me from this distress.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ	y� �ayyu y� qayy�mu	O He Who is Ever-living; O He Who is Self-subsisting,
بِرَحْمَتِكَ اسْتَغِيثُ فَاغِثْنِي	bira�matika astagh�thu fa'aghithn�	in the name of Your mercy I pray for Your aid; so, (please) come to my aid,
وَلاَ تَكِلْنِي إِلىٰ نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ ابَداً	wa l� takiln� il� nafs� �arfata `aynin abadan	do not leave me with myself even for a winking of an eye,
وَاصْلِحْ لِي شَانِي كُلَّهُ	wa a�li� l� sha'n� kullah�	and set aright my entire affair.

زَعَمَتْ سَخِينَةُ انْ سَتَغْلِبُ رَبَّهَا	The eaters of the hot, mean meals (i.e. Quraysh) have claimed that they will overcome their Lord.
فَلَيَغْلِبَنَّ مَغَالِبَ ٱلْغُلاَّبِ	Verily, the overcomer of all combatants shall most surely win.

يَا نُورُ يَا بُرْهَانُ	y� n�ru y� burh�nu	O Light! O Demonstrative Argument!
يَا مُبِينُ يَا مُنِيرُ	y� mub�nu y� mun�ru	O Evident! O Brilliant!
يَا رَبِّ ٱكْفِنِي ٱلشُّرُورَ	y� rabbi ikfin� alshshur�ra	O Lord, (please) save me from all evils
وَآفَاتِ ٱلدُّهُورِ	wa �f�ti aldduh�ri	and vicissitudes of times,
وَاسْالُكَ ٱلنَّجَاةَ يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي ٱلصُّورِ	wa as'aluka alnnaj�ta yawma yunfakhu f� al��ri	and I beseech You for redemption on the day when the Trumpet will be blown.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ	bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi	In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
يَا عُدَّتِي عِنْدَ شِدَّتِي	y� `uddat� `inda shiddat�	O my means in my ordeals!
وَيَا غَوْثِي عِنْدَ كُرْبَتِي	wa y� ghawth� `inda kurbat�	O my aide in my agonies!
وَيَا مُؤْنِسِي عِنْدَ وَحْدَتِي	wa y� mu'nis� `inda wa�dat�	O my entertainment in my loneliness!
ٱحْرُسْنِي بِعَيْنِكَ الَّتِي لاَ تَنَامُ	i�rusn� bi`aynika allat� l� tan�mu	(Please) guard me with Your eye that never sleeps
وَٱكْنُفْنِي بِرُكْنِكَ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يُرَامُ	waknufn� biruknika alladh� l� yur�mu	and embrace me with Your support that is invincible.
