Curing Ailments from Mafatih & Baqiyatus salehat |
Sayyid Ibn ��w�s (may Allah have mercy upon him) in his book of Muhaj al-Da`aw�t has reported Sa`�d ibn Abi�l-Fat� of W�si� as saying:
I was once inflicted by a serious disease that overtired all physicians. Therefore, my father took me to the hospital where all physicians, headed by the Christian doctor of medicine, tried to find me treatment, but failed. Finally, they had to confess, �This disease cannot be healed except by God the All-exalted.� With breaking heart and distress, I had to go back home. Browsing one of my father�s books, I found the following inscribed on the back of the book:
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said: Any diseased person who repeats these statements forty times immediately after the Dawn Prayer and then rubs the painful part with his hand, Almighty Allah will free him from the disease and restore him to health:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�ni alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ |
al�amdu lill�hi rabbi al`�lam�na |
All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. |
حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ |
�asbun� all�hu wa ni`ma alwak�lu |
Sufficient to us is Allah, and most excellent is the Protector. |
تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ احْسَنُ ٱلْخَالِقِينَ |
tab�raka all�hu a�sanu alkh�liq�na |
Blessed be Allah, the Best of all creators. |
وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاََّ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَلِيِّ ٱلْعَظِيمِ |
wa l� �awla wa l� quwwata ill� bill�hi al`aliyyi al`a��mi |
There is neither might nor power save with Allah, the Most High and All-great. |
I, the patient, waited for dawn, performed the obligatory prayer, and sat in my place repeating these words while I was fearful lest the pains would return to me. Keeping on this state for three days, the disease was gone. My father, after I had told him about this, thanked Almighty Allah. When he informed one of the physicians about the restoration of my health, the physician, who was non-Muslim, visited and examined me. When he was sure that my disease had gone, he converted to Islam, bore witness that Mu�ammad is the messenger of God, and committed himself to the teachings of Islam.
Al-Kaf`am�, in his book entitled al-Mi�b��, has mentioned that whoever is diseased, may rub over the place of his prostration (in prayers) with his hand and then rub the ailed organ after each obligatory prayer seven times. He may then say the following prayer:
يَا مَنْ كَبَسَ ٱلارْضَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْمَاءِ |
y� man kabasa al-ar�a `al� alm�'i |
O He Who has pressed the earth on water, |
وَسَدَّ ٱلْهَوَاءَ بِٱلسَّمَاءِ |
wa sadda alhaw�'a bilssam�'i |
blocked the air with the sky, |
وَٱخْتَارَ لِنَفْسِهِ احْسَنَ ٱلاسْمَاءِ |
wakht�ra linafsih� a�sana al-asm�'i |
and chose for Himself the most excellent of all names, |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
(please) send blessings upon Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad, |
وَٱفْعَلْ بِي� |
waf`al b�� |
do to me� |
وَٱرْزُقْنِي وَعَافِنِي مِنْ� |
warzuqn� wa `�fin� min� |
grant me sustenance, and cure me of� |
[Instead of the three dots, you may submit your requests and mention your ailed organ.]
Quoting Mi�b�� al-Mutahajjid, al-Kaf`am� has reported that whoever is ailed, may say the following prayer in the second prostration of the first two units of the Night Prayer:
يَا عَلِيُّ يَا عَظِيمُ |
y� `aliyyu y� `��mu |
O Most High! O All-great! |
يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ |
y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu |
O All-beneficent! O All-merciful! |
يَا سَمِيعَ ٱلدَّعَوَاتِ |
y� sam�`a aldda`aw�ti |
O Hearer of all prayers! |
يَا مُعْطِيَ ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ |
y� mu`�iya alkhayr�ti |
O Giver of the good things! |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �lih� |
(Please) bless Mu�ammad and his Household, |
وَاعْطِنِي مِنْ خَيْرِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ مَا انْتَ اهْلُهُ |
wa a`�in� min khayri aldduny� wal-�khirati m� anta ahluh� |
give me from the good of this world and the Next World in the amount that fits You, |
وَٱصْرِفْ عَنِّي مِنْ شَرِّ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ مَا انْتَ اهْلُهُ |
wa�rif `ann� min sharri aldduny� wal-�khirati m� anta ahluh� |
dispel from me the evils of this world and the Next World in the way that fits You, |
وَاذْهِبْ عَنِّي هٰذَا ٱلْوَجَعَ� |
wa adhhib `ann� h�dh� alwaja`a� |
and remove from me this ailment� |
The disease or ailment may be now mentioned�
فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ غَاظَنِي وَاحْزَنَنِي |
fa'innah� qad gh��an� wa a�zanan� |
for it has enraged and depressed me. |
It is recommended to supplicate earnestly, because the more earnest the sooner in response.
Quoted from `Uddat al-D�`�, Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said:
When you are ailed, go outdoors, raise your hands towards the sky, and say the following prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَيَّرْتَ اقْوَاماً فِي كِتَابِكَ |
all�humma innaka `ayyarta aqw�man f� kit�bika |
O Allah! Having rebuked some people in Your Book, |
فَقُلْتَ: ﴿قُلِ ٱدْعُوٱ ٱلَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ |
faqulta qul id`� alladh�na za`amtum min d�nih� |
You said, �Say, �Call on those whom you assert besides Him. |
فَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ وَلاَ تَحْوِيلاًَ﴾ |
fal� yamlik�na kashfa al��urri `ankum wa l� ta�w�lan |
They shall not control the removal of distress from you nor its transference.�� |
فَيَا مَنْ لاَ يَمْلِكُ كَشْفَ ضُرِّي وَلاَ تَحْوِيلَهُ عَنِّي احَدٌ غَيْرُهُ |
fay�man l� yamliku kashfa �urr� wa l� ta�w�lah� `ann� a�adun ghayruh� |
O He save Whom no one controls the removal of distress nor its transference, |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �lih� |
(please) bless Mu�ammad and his Household, |
وَٱكْشِفْ ضُرِّي |
wakshif �urr� |
remove my distress, |
وَحَوِّلْهُ إِلَىٰ مَنْ يَدْعُو مَعَكَ إِلٰهاً آخَرَ |
wa �awwilhu il� man yad`� ma`aka il�han �khara |
and transfer it to one who calls on another deity besides You, |
فَإِنِّي اشْهَدُ انْ لاَ إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ |
fa'inn� ashhadu an l� il�ha ghayruka |
for I bear witness that there is no god save You. |
It is also reported that any believer who is diseased or ailed, should rub the ailed organ with his hand and repeat the following (holy verse) with sincerity:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ |
wa nunazzilu min alqur'�ni m� huwa shif�'un wa ra�matun lilmu'min�na |
�[And] We reveal of the Qur'�n that which is a healing and a mercy for believers |
وَلاَ يَزِيدُ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ إِلاََّ خَسَاراً. |
wa l� yaz�du al���lim�na ill� khas�ran |
though it increase the evil-doers in naught save ruin.� |
If he does, he will be restored to health no matter what his disease would be. Confirming this, the holy verse corroborates that it carries healing and mercy to the believers.
An ailed person is recommended to purchase one ��`([1]) of wheat, lie on his back, disperse the wheat grains on his chest, and say the following prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ بِٱسْمِكَ |
all�humma inn� as'aluka bismika |
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your Name� |
ٱلَّذِي إِذَا سَالَكَ بِهِ ٱلْمُضْطَرُّ كَشَفْتَ مَا بِهِ مِنْ ضُرٍّ |
alladh� idh� sa'alaka bih� almu��arra kashafta m� bih� min �urrin |
if the distressed asks You by Your Name, You shall remove whatever harm he suffers, |
وَمَكَّنْتَ لَهُ فِي ٱلارْضِ |
wa makkanta lah� f� al-ar�i |
give him power in the land, |
وَجَعَلْتَهُ خَلِيفَتَكَ عَلَىٰ خَلْقِكَ |
wa ja`altah� khal�fataka `al� khalqika |
and make him Your representative among Your creatures |
انْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ اهْلِ بَيْتِهِ |
an tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin wa `al� ahli baytih� |
to bless Mu�ammad and his Household |
وَانْ تُعَافِيَنِي مِنْ عِلَّتِي |
wa an tu`�fiyan� min `illat� |
and to cure me of my ailment. |
He may then sit, gather the wheat grains around him, repeat the same prayer, divide the wheat grains into four shares, give each share to a poor man, and repeat the same prayer. Once an ailed person does all that, he will be restored to health, Allah willing.
Imam `Al� (`a) is reported to have said: Put your hand on the ailed organ and repeat the following prayer three times:
اللَّهُ اللَّهُ اللَّهُ رَبِّي حَقّاً |
all�hu all�hu all�hu rabb� �aqqan |
Allah, Allah, Allah is my Lord indeed. |
لاَ اشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئاً |
l� ushriku bih� shay'an |
I do not associate with Him anything. |
اللَّهُمَّ انْتَ لَهَا وَلِكُلِّ عَظِيمَةٍ فَفَرِّجْهَا |
all�humma anta lah� wa likulli `a��matin fafarrijh� |
O Allah, You are the only besought for this and for every terrible thing; so (please) relieve it. |
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said in this regard: You may put your hand on the ailed organ and say:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi |
In the Name of Allah. |
You may then rub the ailed organ with your hand and repeat the following evil-repelling prayer (`�dhah) seven times:
اعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ ٱللَّهِ |
a`�dhu bi`izzati all�hi |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s almightiness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِقُدْرَةِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu biqudrati all�hi |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s omnipotence, |
وَاعُوذُ بِجَلاَلِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bijal�li all�hi |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s majesty, |
وَاعُوذُ بِعَظَمَةِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bi`a�amati all�h |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s greatness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِجَمْعِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bijam`i all�hi |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s wholeness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِرَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ |
wa a`�dhu biras�li all�hi �all� all�hu `alayhi wa �lih� |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s Messenger, may Allah�s blessings be upon him and his Household, |
وَاعُوذُ بِاسْمَاءِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bi-asm�'i all�hi |
and I pray for the protection of Allah�s Names |
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا احْذَرُ |
min sharri m� a�dharu |
against the evil of what I concern |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا اخَافُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِي |
wa min sharri m� akh�fu `al� nafs� |
and the evil of what I fear for myself. |
It is reported that when a child is ailed, the mother may ascend to a roof, throw the head cover away, expose the hair of her head under the sky, prostrate herself, and say the following supplication:
اللَّهُمَّ رَبِّ انْتَ اعْطَيْتَنِيهِ |
all�humma rabbi anta a`�aytan�hi |
O Allah, O my Lord! It is You Who have given him to me |
وَانْتَ وَهَبْتَهُ لِي |
wa anta wahabtah� l� |
and it is You Who have endued me with Him. |
اللَّهُمَّ فَٱجْعَلْ هِبَتَكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ جَدِيدَةً |
all�humma faj`al hibataka alyawma jad�datan |
O Allah, so (please) renew Your donation to me on this day. |
إِنَّكَ قَادِرٌ مُقْتَدِرٌ |
innaka q�dirun muqtadirun |
You are verily all-powerful and omnipotent. |
The mother will not raise her head from the prostration but that her child is restored to health.
Al-Shah�d, may Allah have mercy upon him, has reported that whoever is tensely ailed may recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah forty times on a glass of water. He may then pour the water on his body. He may have a measure of wheat near him and hand over each beggar a measure and ask him to pray Almighty Allah to cure him. If he does so, he will be restored to health, Allah willing.
�Medicate your patients with alms.� This saying is reported through considerable chains of authority.
With reference to removal of diseases, al-Shah�d has also reported that the right arm of a patient may be held while reciting S�rah al-F�ti�ah seven times. After that, the following prayer may be said:
اللَّهُمَّ ازِلْ عَنْهُ ٱلْعِلَلَ وَٱلدَّاءَ |
all�humma azil `anhu al`ilala waldd�'a |
O Allah, (please) remove ailments and maladies from him, |
وَاعِدْهُ إِلَىٰ ٱلصِّحَّةِ وَٱلشِّفَاءِ |
wa a`id-hu il� al��i��ati walshshif�'i |
restore him to health and cure, |
وَامِدَّهُ بِحُسْنِ ٱلْوِقَايَةِ |
wa amiddah� bi�usni alwiq�yati |
supply him with excellent protection, |
وَرُدَّهُ إِلَىٰ حُسْنِ ٱلْعَافِيَةِ |
wa ruddah� il� �usni al`�fiyati |
return him to excellent wellbeing, |
وَٱجْعَلْ مَا نَالَهُ فِي مَرَضِهِ هٰذَا مَادَّةً لِحَيَاتِهِ |
waj`al m� n�lah� f� mara�ih� h�dh� m�ddatan li�ay�tih� |
and cause what has afflicted him in this ailment of him to be material of his life |
وَكَفَّارَةً لِسَيِّئَاتِهِ |
wa kaff�ratan lisayyi'�tih� |
and remission of his evildoings. |
اللَّهُمَّ وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
all�humma wa �alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
O Allah, (please) bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad. |
If this does not work, S�rah al-F�ti�ah may be repeated seventy times, and it will be effective, Allah willing.
Imam al-B�qir (`a) is reported to have said, �Whoever is not healed by S�rah al-F�ti�ah and S�rah al-Taw��d, nothing else will heal him. Verily, these two S�rahs cure of all ailments.�
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said: Allah will certainly cure any ailed believer who says the following verse sincerely while rubbing his ailed organ with his hand:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ |
wa nunazzilu min alqur'�ni m� huwa shif�'un wa ra�matun lilmu'min�na |
�[And] We reveal of the Qur��n that which is a healing and a mercy for believers.� |
Imam al-Ri�� (`a) is reported to have said: For all ailments, you may say the following prayer:
يَا مُنْزِلَ ٱلشِّفَاءِ وَمُذْهِبَ ٱلدَّاءِ |
y� munzila alshshif�'i |
O revealer of cure and remover of remedy, |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ |
wa mudhhiba aldd�'i |
(please) bless Mu�ammad and his Household |
وَانْزِلْ عَلَىٰ وَجَعِي ٱلشِّفَاءَ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �lih� |
and reveal cure upon my ailment. |
Sayyid Ibn ��w�s, may Allah have mercy upon him, has mentioned the following narration in his book entitled Muhaj al-Da`aw�t:
Ibn `Abb�s is reported to have said that he was once present with Imam `Al� (`a) when a faint-faced man visited him and said, �O Commander of the Faithful, I am diseased person and many ailments and aches have afflicted me. So, please teach me a prayer that helps me endure my ailments.� Answering him, Imam `Al� (`a) said, �I will lead you to a prayer that was taught by Archangel Gabriel to the Holy Prophet (�) when al-�asan and al-�usayn fell ill. This is it:
إِلٰهِي كُلَّمَا انْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ نِعْمَةً |
il�h� kullam� an`amta `alayya ni`matan |
O my God, whenever You bestow upon me a favor, |
قَلَّ لَكَ عِنْدَهَا شُكْرِي |
qalla laka `indah� shukr� |
I am too short to thank it properly. |
وَكُلَّمَا ٱبْتَلَيْتَنِي بِبَلِيَّةٍ |
wa kullam� ibtalaytan� bibaliyyatin |
Whenever You test me with a tribulation, |
قَلَّ لَكَ عِنْدَهَا صَبْرِي |
qalla laka `indah� �abr� |
I am too short to endure it. |
فَيَا مَنْ قَلَّ شُكْرِي عِنْدَ نِعَمِهِ فَلَمْ يَحْرِمْنِي |
fay� man qalla shukr� `inda ni`amih� falam ya�rimn� |
O He Whose favors have not been thanked by me properly; yet, He has not deprived me of them! |
وَيَا مَنْ قَلَّ صَبْرِي عِنْدَ بَلاَئِهِ فَلَمْ يَخْذُلْنِي |
wa y�man qalla �abr� `inda bal�'ih� falam yakhdhuln� |
O He Whose tribulations have not been endured by me properly; yet, He has not disappointed me! |
وَيَا مَنْ رَآنِي عَلَىٰ ٱلْمَعَاصِي فَلَمْ يَفْضَحْنِي |
wa y� man ra'�n� `al� alma`��� falam yaf�a�n� |
O He Who has seen me committing acts of disobedience to Him; yet, He has not exposed me! |
وَيَا مَنْ رَآنِي عَلَىٰ ٱلْخَطَايَا فَلَمْ يُعَاقِبْنِي عَلَيْهَا |
wa y� man ra'�n� `al� alkha��y� falam yu`�qibn� `alayh� |
O He Who has seen me committing wrongdoings; yet, He has not punished me for them! |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
(Please) bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad, |
وَٱغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي |
waghfir l� dhanb� |
forgive my sin |
وَٱشْفِنِي مِنْ مَرَضِي |
washfin� min mara�� |
and cure me of my ailment. |
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ |
innaka `al� kulli shay'in qad�run |
Verily, You have power over all things.� |
Ibn `Abb�s added: One year later, I saw the man fresh-faced and glowing. He said, �Whenever I said this prayer in sickness, I would be soon restored to health, in ailment, I would be soon cured, and before a despotic authority, I would be protected against him.�
It is reported that al-Naj�sh�, an ancient king of Abyssinia, inherited from his fathers a four hundred year old bonnet that appeases any pain that it touches. When the bonnet was untied to inspect its secret, the following prayer was seen written therein:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمَلِكِ ٱلْحَقِّ ٱلْمُبِينِ |
bismill�hi almaliki al�aqqi almub�ni |
In the Name of Allah; the King and the Manifest Truth. |
شَهِدَ ٱللَّهُ انَّهُ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ هُوَ |
shahida all�hu annah� l� il�ha ill� huwa |
Allah is witness that there is no god save Him. |
وَٱلْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَاولُو الْعِلْمِ |
walmal�'ikatu wa ul� al`ilmi |
The angels and the men of learning too are witness. |
قَائِماً بِالْقِسْطِ |
q�'iman bilqis�i |
Maintaining His creation in justice, |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ |
l� il�ha ill� huwa al`az�zu al�ak�mu |
there is no god save Him; the Almighty and Wise. |
إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِنْدَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلإِسْلاَمُ |
inna aldd�na `inda all�hi al-isl�mu |
Lo! The religion with Allah is Islam. |
لِلَّهِ نُورٌ وَحِكْمَةٌ |
lill�hi n�run wa �ikmatun |
To Allah there are light, wisdom, |
وَحَوْلٌ وَقُوَّةٌ |
wa �awlun wa quwwatun |
might, power, |
وَقُدْرَةٌ وَسُلْطَانٌ وَبُرْهَانٌ |
wa qudratun wa sul��nun wa burh�nun |
omnipotence, authority, and clear evidence. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
آدَمُ صَفِيُّ ٱللَّهِ |
�damu �afiyyu all�hi |
Adam is the choice of Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
إِبْرَاهِيمُ خَلِيلُ ٱللَّهِ |
ibr�h�mu khal�lu all�hi |
Abraham is the friend of Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
مُوسَىٰ كَلِيمُ ٱللَّهِ |
m�s� kal�mu all�hi |
Moses is the spoken by Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
مُحَمَّدٌ ٱلْعَرَبِيُّ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ |
mu�ammadun al`arabiyyu ras�lu all�hi |
Mu�ammad the Arab is the messenger of Allah, |
وَحَبِيبُهُ وَخِيَرَتُهُ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ |
wa �ab�buh� wa khiyaratuh� min khalqih� |
as well as His most beloved and best of all His creatures. |
اسْكُنْ يَا جَمِيعَ ٱلاوْجَاعِ |
uskun y� jam�`a al-awj�`i |
Calm down, O all pains, |
وَٱلاسْقَامِ وَٱلامْرَاضِ |
wal-asq�mi wal-amr��i |
illnesses, diseases, |
وَجَمِيعَ ٱلْعِلَلِ |
wa jam�`a al`ilali |
all ailments, |
وَجَمِيعَ ٱلْحُمَيَّاتِ |
wa jam�`a al�umayy�ti |
and all fevers. |
سَكَّنْتُكَ بِٱلَّذِي سَكَنَ لَهُ مَا فِي ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ |
sakkantuka billadh� sakana lah� m� f� allayli walnnah�ri |
I make you calm down in the name of the One to Whom whatsoever in the night and daylight rests |
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ |
wa huwa alssam�`u al`al�mu |
and He is the All-hearing and All-knowing. |
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ خَيْرِ خَلْقِهِ |
wa �all� all�hu `al� khayri khalqih� |
May Allah bless the best of His creatures; |
مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ اجْمَعِينَ |
mu�ammadin wa �lih� ajma`�na |
Mu�ammad, and his entire Household. |
According to Mak�rim al-Akhl�q, al-Naj�sh�, having had headache, wrote a message to the Holy Prophet (�) complaining about his ache. In response, the Holy Prophet (�) sent him a amulet written in a patch. When al-Naj�sh� put the patch in his bonnet, his headache was relieved.
This is the amulet:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ٱلْمُبِينُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu almaliku al�aqq almub�nu |
There is no god save Allah, the King and the manifest truth. |
شَهِدَ ٱللَّهُ انَّهُ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ |
shahida all�hu annah� l� il�ha ill� huwa |
Allah bears witness that there is no god but He |
وَٱلْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَاوْلُو ٱلْعِلْمِ |
walmal�'ikatu wa ulul-`ilmi |
and so do the angels and those possessed of knowledge |
قَائِمًا بِٱلْقِسْطِ |
q�'iman bilqis�i |
maintaining His creation with justice. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ |
l� il�ha ill� huwa al`az�zu al�ak�mu |
There is no god but Him, the Mighty, the Wise. |
لِلَّهِ نُورٌ وَحِكْمَةٌ |
lill�hi n�run wa �ikmatun |
To Allah there are light, wisdom, |
وَعِزٌّ وَقُوَّةٌ |
wa `izzun wa quwwatun |
might, power, |
وَبُرْهَانٌ وَقُدْرَةٌ |
wa burh�nun wa qudratun |
clear argument, omnipotence, |
وَسُلْطَانٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ |
wa sul��nun wa ra�matun |
authority, and mercy. |
يَا مَنْ لاَ يَنَامُ |
y� man l� yan�mu |
O He Who never sleeps! |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
إِبْرَاهِيمُ خَلِيلُ ٱللَّهِ |
ibr�h�mu khal�lu all�hi |
Abraham is the friend of Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
مُوسىٰ كَلِيمُ ٱللَّهِ |
m�s� kal�mu all�hi |
Moses is the spoken by Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
عِيسىٰ رُوحُ ٱللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ |
`�s� r��u all�h wa kalimatuh� |
Jesus and Allah�s spirit and word. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ |
mu�ammadun ras�l all�hi |
Mu�ammad is Allah�s messenger, |
وَصَفِيُّهُ وَصِفْوَتُهُ |
wa �afiyyuh� wa �ifwatuh� |
choice, and select. |
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ |
�all� all�hu `alayhi wa �lih� wa sallama |
May Allah send blessings and peace upon him and his Household. |
اسْكُنْ |
uskun |
Calm down! |
سَكَّنْتُكَ بِمَنْ يَسْكُنُ لَهُ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَوَاتِ وَٱلارْضِ |
sakkantuka biman yaskunu lah� m� f� alssamaw�ti wal-ar�i |
I make you calm down in the name of the One before Whom whatever is in the heavens and the earth rests |
وَبِمَنْ سَكَنَ لَهُ مَا فِي ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ |
wa biman sakana lah� m� f� allayli walnnah�ri |
and in the name of the One to Whom whatsoever in the night and daylight rests |
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ |
wa huwa alssam�`u al`al�mu |
and He is the All-hearing and All-knowing. |
فَسَخَّرْنَا لَهُ ٱلرِّيحَ تَجْرِي بِامْرِهِ |
fasakhkharn� lah� alrr��a tajr� bi-amrih� |
Then, We made the wind subservient to him; it made his command |
رُخَاءً حَيْثُ اصَابَ |
rukh�'an �aythu a��ba |
to run gently wherever he desired |
وَٱلشَّيَاطِينَ كُلَّ بَنَّاءٍ وَغَوَّاصٍ |
walshshay���na kulla bann�'in wa ghaww��in |
and the devils, every builder and diver. |
الاَ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ تَصِيرُ ٱلامُورُ |
al� il� all�hi ta��ru al-um�ru |
Verily, all things return to Allah. |
Imam al-B�qir (`a) is reported to have said: Whoever suffers from headache may rub his head with his hand and repeat the following statement seven times:
اعُوذُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي سَكَنَ لَهُ مَا فِي ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ |
a`�dhu bill�hi alladh� sakana lah� m� f� albarri walba�ri |
I beseech the protection of the One to Whom whatsoever in the lands, in the sea, |
وَمَا فِي ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلارْضِ |
wa m� f� alssam�w�ti wal-ar�i |
in the heavens, and in the earth rests |
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ |
wa huwa alssam�`u al`al�mu |
and He is the All-hearing and All-knowing. |
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have advised the same amulet to be repeated seven times by those who suffer from earache.
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have advised those who suffer from earache to do the following:
Bring a piece of very old cheese, crush it, add milk to it, boil it on fire, and pour some drops of it in the ached ear.
Recite the following holy verse on a glass of water and then drink it:
اوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذينَ كَفَرُوٱ |
awalam yara alladh�na kafar� |
�Do not those who disbelieve |
انَّ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلارْضَ |
anna alssam�w�ti wal-ar�a |
see that the heavens and the earth |
كَانَتَا رَتْقاً فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا |
k�nat� ratqan fafataqn�hum� |
were closed up, but We have opened them |
وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ |
wa ja`aln� min alm�'i kulla shay'in �ayyin |
and We have made of water everything living? |
افَلاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ. |
afal� yu'min�na |
Will they not then believe?� |
It is reported that whenever the Holy Prophet (�) was ailed or suffered from headache, he would open his two hands, recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah, S�rah al-Falaq, and S�rah al-N�s, and then rub his face with his hands. Then, the ache would disappear.
For those who suffer from headache, while rubbing their heads with the hands, the following holy verse should be recited:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُمْسِكُ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلارْضَ انْ تَزُولاَ |
inna all�ha yumsiku alssam�w�ti wal-ar�a an taz�l� |
Surely, Allah upholds the heavens and the earth lest they come to naught; |
وَلَئِنْ زَالَتَا إِنْ امْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ احَدٍ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ |
wa la'in z�lat� in amsakahum� min a�adin min ba`dih� |
and if they should come to naught, there is none who can uphold them after Him. |
إِنَّهُ كَانَ حَلِيماً غَفُوراً |
innah� k�na �al�man ghaf�ran |
Surely, He is the Forbearing, the Forgiving. |
The following incident is quoted from the book of Rab�` al-Abr�r:
In Turtus (a city western Syria), Al-Ma'm�n, the `Abb�sid ruler, was once affected by headache that none could treat. Having heard about this, the Roman emperor sent him a bonnet and a letter in which he wrote, �Having been informed about your headache, I sent you this bonnet so that you would put it on your head and your ache would vanish.� Anticipating that the bonnet would be poisoned, al-Ma'm�n ordered the messenger to put it on his head. However, no harm happened to the messenger. Al-Ma'm�n then ordered the bonnet to be put on the head of another man who suffered from headache. Therefore, his pain vanished. Only then did he put it on his head and his headache vanished. Surprised, al-Ma'm�n untied the bonnet and found the following inscription written therein:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismi all�h alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
كَمْ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ لِلَّهِ فِي عِرْقٍ سَاكِنٍ |
kam min ni`matin lill�hi f� `irqin s�kinin |
Too many graces of Allah are in dormant vein. |
حٰم عسقٰ |
��-m�m `ayn-s�n-q�f |
��-m�m `ayn-s�n-q�f |
لاَ يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلاَ يُنْزِفُونَ |
l� yu�adda`�na `anh� wa l� yunzif�na |
They shall not be affected with headache thereby nor shall they get exhausted. |
مِنْ كَلاَمِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ خَمَدَتِ ٱلنِّيرَانُ |
min kal�mi alrra�m�ni khamadati alnn�r�nu |
Due to the words of the All-beneficent Lord, fires are extinguished. |
وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاََّ بِٱللَّهِ |
wa l� �awla wa l� quwwata ill� bill�hi |
There is neither might nor power save with Allah. |
وَجَالَ نَفْعُ ٱلدَّوَاءِ فِيكَ |
wa j�la naf`u alddaw�'i f�ka |
Let the benefit of medicine pervade in you |
كَمَا يَجُولُ مَاءُ ٱلرَّبِيعِ فِي ٱلْغُصْنِ |
kam� yaj�lu m�'u alrrab�`i f� alghu�ni |
just as the spring water pervades in twigs. |
Put your hand on the ached half of your head and repeat the following prayer three times:
يَا ظَاهِراً مَوْجُوداً |
y� ��hiran mawj�dan |
O Manifestly Existent, |
وَيَا بَاطِناً غَيْرَ مَفْقُودٍ |
wa y� b��inan ghayra mafq�din |
O never missing although immanent! |
ارْدُدْ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِكَ ٱلضَّعِيفِ ايَادِيَكَ ٱلْجَمِيلَةَ عِنْدَهُ |
urdud `al� `abdika al��a`�fi ay�diyaka aljam�lata `indah� |
Confer back Your excellent favors upon your weak servant |
وَاذْهِبْ عَنْهُ مَا بِهِ مِنْ اذىٰ |
wa adhhib `anhu m� bih� min adhan |
and remove from him the harm from which he is suffering. |
إِنَّكَ رَحِيمٌ قَدِيرٌ |
innaka ra��mun qad�run |
Verily, You are All-merciful and Omnipotent. |
Imam al-B�qir (`a) is reported to have said: Put your hand on the ailed organ and recite the following holy verses [the last four verses of S�rah al-�ashr]:
لَوْ انْزَلْنَا هٰذَا ٱلْقُرْآنَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ� |
law anzaln� h�dh� al-qur'�na `al� jabalin� |
Had We sent down this Qur'�n on a mountain� |
These holy verses have been previously cited in this book.
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said: As for those who suffer from mouth ache, they may put their hands on the ached organ and say the following:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismi all�h alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ ٱسْمِهِ دَاءٌ |
bismi all�h alladh� l� ya�urru ma`a ismih� d�'un |
In the Name of Allah with Whose Name no malady will harm. |
اعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَهَا شَيْءٌ |
a`�dhu bikalim�ti all�hi allat� l� ya�urru ma`ah� shay'un |
I pray for the protection of Allah�s Words with which nothing will harm. |
قُدُّوسٌ قُدُّوسٌ قُدُّوسٌ |
qudd�sun qudd�sun qudd�sun |
All-holy. All-holy. All-holy. |
اسْالُكَ يَا رَبِّ بِٱسْمِكَ |
as'aluka y� rabbi bismika |
I beseech You, O my Lord, in Your Name, |
ٱلطَّاهِرِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ ٱلْمُبَارَكِ |
al���hiri almuqaddsi almub�raki |
the all-pure, the sacred, the all-blessed; |
ٱلَّذِي مَنْ سَالَكَ بِهِ اعْطَيْتَهُ |
alladh� man sa'alaka bih� a`�aytah� |
whoever beseeches You in Your Name, You will give him |
وَمَنْ دَعَاكَ بِهِ اجَبْتَهُ |
wa man da`�ka bih� ajabtah� |
and whoever implores You in Your Name, You will respond to him. |
اسْالُكَ يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ |
as'aluka y� all�hu y� all�hu y� all�hu |
I beseech you, O Allah, O Allah, O Allah, |
انْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلنَّبِيِّ وَاهْلِ بَيْتِهِ |
an tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin alnnabiyyi wa ahli baytih� |
to bless Mu�ammad, the Prophet, and his Household |
وَانْ تُعَافِيَنِي مِمَّا اجِدُ فِي فَمِي وَفِي رَاسِي |
wa an tu`�fiyan� mimm� ajidu f� fam� wa f� ra's� |
and to cure me of the ache from which I am suffering in my mouth, my head, |
وَفِي سَمْعِي وَفِي بَصَرِي |
wa f� sam`� wa f� ba�ar� |
my hearing, my sight, |
وَفِي بَطْنِي وَفَِي ظَهْرِي |
wa f� ba�n� wa f� �ahr� |
my stomach, my back, |
وَفِي يَدِي وَفِي رِجْلي |
wa f� yad� wa f� rijl� |
my hand, my leg, |
وَفِي جَوَارِحِي كُلِّهَا |
wa f� jaw�ri�� kullih� |
and all of my organs. |
Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said: As for those who suffer from toothache, they may put their hands on the ached organ and recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah, S�rah al-Taw��d, S�rah al-Qadr, and the following holy verse:
وَتَرَىٰ ٱلْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً |
wa tar� aljib�la ta�sabuh� j�midatan |
And you see the mountains, you think them to be solid, |
وَهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ ٱلسَّحَابِ |
wa hiya tamurru marra alssa��bi |
and they shall pass away as the passing away of the cloud-- |
صُنْعَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي اتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ |
�un`a all�hi alladh� atqana kulla shay'in |
the handiwork of Allah Who has made every thing thoroughly. |
إِنَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَفْعَلُونَ |
innah� khab�run bim� taf`al�na |
Surely, He is Aware of what you do. |
Likewise, Imam `Al� (`a) is reported to have said: You may rub the place of your prostration (in ritual prayers) with your hand, rub the ached tooth with it, and say the following:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ |
bismi all�hi |
In the Name of Allah. |
وَٱلشَّافِي ٱللَّهُ |
walshsh�f� all�hu |
The (true) Healer is Allah. |
وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاََّ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَلِيِّ ٱلْعَظِيمِ |
wa l� �awla wa l� quwwata ill� bill�hi al`aliyyi al`a��mi |
There is neither might nor power save with Allah, the Most High and All-great. |
You may recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah and S�rah al-Taw��d. With each S�rah, you may recite:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismi all�h alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
After S�rah al-Taw��d, you may recite the following holy verses:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
وَلَهُ مَا سَكَنَ فِي ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ |
wa lah� m� sakana f� allayli walnnah�ri |
And to Him belongs whatever dwells in the night and the day |
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ |
wa huwa alssam�`u al`al�mu |
and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. |
قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلاَمًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ |
quln� y� n�ru k�n� bardan wa sal�man `al� ibr�h�ma |
We said: O fire! Be a comfort and peace to Abraham. |
وَارَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ ٱلاخْسَرِينَ |
wa ar�d� bih� kaydan faja`aln�humu al-akhsar�na |
They desired a war on him but We made them the greatest losers. |
نُودِيَ انْ بُورِكَ مَنْ فِي ٱلنَّارِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا |
n�diya an b�rika man f� alnn�ri wa man �awlah� |
Blessed is Whoever is in the fire and whatever is about it |
وَسُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ |
wa sub��na all�hi rabbi al`�lam�na |
and glory be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. |
You may then say the following prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ يَا كَافِياً مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ |
all�humma y� k�fiyan min kulli shay'in |
O Allah, O He Who saves from all things |
وَلاَ يَكْفِي مِنْكَ شَيْءٌ |
wa l� yakf� minka shay'un |
while nothing can save from You, |
إِكْفِ عَبْدَكَ وَٱبْنَ امَتِكَ |
ikfi `abdaka wabna amatika |
(please) save Your servant and the son of Your she-servant |
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَخَافُ وَيَحْذَرُ |
min sharri m� yakh�fu wa ya�dharu |
from the evil of what he fears and anticipates |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلْوَجَعِ ٱلَّذِي يَشْكُوهُ إِلَيْكَ |
wa min sharri alwaja`i alladh� yashk�hu ilayka |
and from the evil of the ache about which he is complaining to You. |
It is also reported that one who suffers from toothache may take a blade or a leaf of a date-palm tree, rub the ached place with it, and repeat the following statement seven times:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi wa bill�hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust). |
مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ |
mu�ammadun ras�lu all�hi |
Mu�ammad is the messenger of Allah |
وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ خَلِيلُ ٱللَّهَ |
wa ibr�h�mu khal�lu all�hi |
and Abraham is the friend of Allah. |
اسْكُنْ بِٱلَّذِي سَكَنَ لَهُ مَا فِي ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ بِإِذْنِهِ |
uskun billadh� sakana lah� m� f� allayli walnnah�ri bi'idhnih� |
Calm down in the name of the One to Whom whatsoever is in the night and day rests by His permission |
وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ |
wa huwa `al� kulli shay'in qad�run |
and He has power over all things. |
It is also reported that one who suffers from toothache may put a stick or a piece of iron on the tooth and use this amulet from the side of the tooth by repeating it seven times:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
الْعَجَبُ كُلُّ ٱلْعَجَبِ |
al`ajabu kullu al`ajabi |
How wonderful! It is the wonder of wonders |
دُودَةٌ تَكُونُ فِي ٱلْفَمِ |
d�datun tak�nu f� alfami |
that a worm in the mouth |
تَاكُلُ ٱلْعَظْمَ |
ta'kulu al`a�ma |
eats the bone |
وَتُنْزِلُ ٱلدَّمَ |
wa tunzilu alddama |
and causes blood to come out. |
انَا ٱلرَّاقِي |
an� alrr�q� |
I use this amulet |
وَٱللََّهُ ٱلشَّافِي وَٱلْكَافِي |
wall�hu alshsh�f� walk�f� |
but Allah is the healer and the savior. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاََّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god save Allah. |
وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ |
wal�amdu lill�hi rabbi al`�lam�na |
All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. |
(وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَٱدَّارَاتُمْ فِيهَا |
wa idh qataltum nafsan fadd�ra'tum f�h� |
�And when you killed a man, then you disagreed with respect to that, |
وَٱللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ. |
wall�hu mukhrijun m� kuntum taktum�na |
and Allah was to bring forth that which you were going to hide. |
فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا |
faquln� i�rib�hu biba`�ih� |
So, We said: Strike the dead body with part of the sacrificed cow. |
كَذٰلِكَ يُحْيِي ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ |
kadh�lika yu�y� all�hu almawt� |
Thus Allah brings the dead to life |
وَيُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ) |
wa yur�kum �y�tih� la`allakum ta`qil�na |
and He shows you His signs so that you may understand.� |
The previous method may be repeated seven times.
It is also reported that the previously mentioned verse (i.e. �and when you killed��) may be recited by those who suffer from chest pains.
A tradition reads, �Seek healing from the Holy Qur'�n, for Almighty Allah says, �O men! There has come to you indeed an admonition from your Lord and a healing for what is in the breasts. (10/57)��
An all-inclusive prayer is reported for curing of coughing. This lengthy prayer, which is quoted from Bi��r al-Anw�r, Book of Prayers, begins with the following statement:
اللَّهُمَّ انْتَ رَجَائِي |
all�humma anta raj�'� |
O Allah, You are my hope |
وَانْتَ ثِقَتِي وَعِمَادِي� |
wa anta thiqat� wa `im�d�� |
and You are my trust and reliance� |
The Holy Prophet (�) is reported to have advised those who suffer from colic to mix honey with hot water and recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah seven times on the mixture so as to seek Almighty Allah�s protection against the pains.
As to Imam `Al� (`a), he is reported to have directed those who suffer from stomach pains to drink hot water and say the following prayer:
يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ |
y� all�hu y� all�hu y� all�hu |
O Allah! O Allah! O Allah! |
يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ |
y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu |
O All-beneficent! O All-merciful! |
يَا رَبَّ ٱلارْبَابِ |
y� rabba al-arb�bi |
O Lord of all lords! |
يَا إِلٰهَ ٱلآلِهَةِ |
y� il�ha al-�lihati |
O God of all gods! |
يَا مَلِكَ ٱلْمُلُوكِ |
y� malika almul�ki |
O King of all kings! |
يَا سَيِّدَ ٱلسَّادَةِ |
y� sayyida alss�dati |
O Master of all masters! |
إِشْفِنِي بِشِفَائِكَ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَسُقْمٍ |
ishfin� bishif�'ika min kulli d�'in wa suqmin |
(Please) cure me, with Your cure, of all maladies and illnesses, |
فَإِنِّي عَبْدُكَ وَٱبْنُ عَبْدَيْكَ |
fa'inn� `abduka wabnu `abdayka |
for I am Your servant and the son of Your two servants |
اتَقَلَّبُ فِي قَبْضَتِكَ |
ataqallabu f� qab�atika |
and I turn living under Your control. |
For a stomach pain or any other ailment, the sick is recommended to put his/her hand on the ailed place and repeat the following evil-repelling prayer:
اعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ ٱللَّهِ وَجَلاَلِهِ |
a`�dhu bi`izzati all�hi wa jal�lih� |
I pray the protection of Allah�s almightiness and majesty |
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا اجِدُ |
min sharri m� ajidu |
against the evil of what I feel. |
The sick may then put his/her right hand on the ailed place and repeat the following three times:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi |
In the Name of Allah. |
For those who suffer from colitis, they are required to write S�rah al-F�ti�ah, S�rah al-Falaq, and S�rah al-N�s on a paper or a sheet and then adds the following statement thereunder:
اعُوذُ بِوَجْهِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ |
a`�dhu biwajhi all�hi al`a��mi |
I pray the protection of the Face of the All-great Allah, |
وَبِعِزَّتِهِ ٱلَّتِي لاَ تُرَامُ |
wa bi`izzatih� allat� l� tur�mu |
His almightiness that is invulnerable, |
وَبِقُدْرَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي لاَ يَمْتَنِعُ مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ |
wa biqudratih� allat� l� yamtani`u minh� shay'un |
and His omnipotence against which nothing can stop |
مِنْ شَرِّ هٰذَا ٱلْوَجَعِ |
min sharri h�dh� alwaja`i |
against the evil of this pain, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِيهِ |
wa min sharri m� f�hi |
the evil of whatever is in it, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا اجِدُ مِنْهُ |
wa min sharri m� ajidu minhu |
and the evil of what I feel because of it. |
Then, the sheet may be washed with rainwater and drunk (1) in the beginning of the day before eating anything and (2) before going to sleep. This is blessed and useful way.
It is narrated that a man complained to the Holy Prophet (�) about colitis from which his brother had suffered. The Holy Prophet (�) instructed, �Tell your brother to drink a mixture of honey and hot water.� The next day, the man returned to the Holy Prophet (�) and informed that the prescription was not useful. The Holy Prophet (�) commented, �Allah is truthful, but your brother�s colon is not. Go back, give him the same drink, and recite on it S�rah al-F�ti�ah seven times as prayer for God�s protection.� When the man left, the Holy Prophet (�) said to Imam `Al� (`a), �The brother of this man is hypocrite; therefore, the drink was not effective with him.�
To treat warts�small, benign, and hard excrescence on the skin or on the hand occasionally�for each wart, you may take seven barley seeds. Recite the verses 1-6 of S�rah al-W�qi`ah (No. 56) seven times over each seed. Then, recite the following verse seven times over each seed, too:
وَيَسْالُونَكَ عَنْ ٱلْجِبَالِ فَقُلْ يَنسِفُهَا رَبِّي نَسْفًا. |
wa yas'al�naka `an aljib�li faqul yansifuh� rabb� nasfan |
They ask thee concerning the Mountains, say, �My Lord will uproot them and scatter them as dust; |
فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًا صَفْصَفًا. |
fayadharuh� q�`an �af�afan |
He will leave them as plains smooth and level; |
لاَ تَرَىٰ فِيهَا عِوَجًا وَلاَ امْتًا. |
l� tar� f�h� `iwajan wa l� amtan |
Nothing crooked or curved wilt thou see in their place. |
You may then blow over it. Take one seed at a time and rub each seed on one wart. Then, put all of the seeds in a piece of cloth, tie up a rock on the piece of cloth, and throw it in a well.
This act is said to be advisably done in the waning of the moon.
A warty person is recommended to rub the warts with a piece of salt and recite three times the last four verses of S�rah al-�ashr:
لَوْ انْزَلْنَا هٰذَا ٱلْقُرْآنَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ� |
law anzaln� h�dh� al-qur'�na `al� jabalin� |
Had We sent down this Qur'�n on a mountain� |
The piece of salt may be then thrown in an oven and the warty person may pass over it hurriedly. Then, the warts will vanish, Allah willing.
The author of the book of al-Khaz�'in has mentioned that warts may vanish when they are overlaid with the hair-removing powder.
Recite the last four verses of S�rah al-�ashr with ponderation while you are ceremonially pure after you have performed the ritual ablution (wu��') before and after an obligatory prayer:
لَوْ انْزَلْنَا هٰذَا ٱلْقُرْآنَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ� |
law anzaln� h�dh� al-qur'�na `al� jabalin� |
Had We sent down this Qur'�n on a mountain� |
The swelling will then vanish, Allah willing.
For women suffering from dystocia (i.e. difficult or abnormally painful childbirth), the following holy verses may be written on a parchment and tied to their right thigh. It must be untied after they give birth:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
كَانَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ |
ka'annahum yawma yarawna m� y�`ad�na |
On the day that they shall see what they are promised, |
لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٱ إِلاََّ سَاعَةً مِنْ نَهَارٍ |
lam yalbath� ill� s�`atan min nah�rin |
they shall be as if they had not tarried save an hour of the day. |
كَانَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا |
ka'annahum yawma yarawnah� |
On the day that they see it, |
لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٱ إِلاََّ عَشِيَّةً اوْ ضُحَاهَا |
lam yalbath� ill� `ashiyyatan aw �u��h� |
it will be as though they had not tarried but the latter part of a day or the early part of it. |
إِذْ قَالَتِ ٱمْرَاةُ عِمْرَانَ |
idh q�lat imra'atu `imr�na |
When a woman of `Imr�n said: |
رَبِّ إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لَكَ مَا فِي بَطْنِي مُحَرَّراً |
rabbi inn� nadhartu laka m� f� ba�n� mu�arraran |
My Lord! Surely, I vow to You what is in my womb, to be devoted (to Your service); |
فَتَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي إِنَّكَ انْتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ |
fataqabbal minn� innaka anta alssam�`u al`al�mu |
accept therefore from me. Surely, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. |
It is also reported that the following holy verse should be recited over women suffering from dystocia:
فَاجَاءَهَا ٱلْمَخَاضُ إِلَىٰ جِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ |
fa'aj��ah� almakh��u il� jidh`I alnnakhlati |
And the throes (of childbirth) compelled her to betake herself to the trunk of a palm tree. |
قَالَتْ يَا لَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هٰذَا |
q�lat y� laytan� mittu qabla h�da� |
She said: Oh, would that I had died before this, |
وَكُنتُ نَسْيًا مَنْسِيّاً |
wa kuntu nasyan mansiyyan |
and had been a thing quite forgotten. |
فَنَادَاهَا مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الاَّ تَحْزَنِي |
fan�d�h� min ta�tih� all� ta�zan� |
Then (the child) called out to her from beneath her: Grieve not! |
قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيّاً |
qad ja`ala rabbuki ta�taki sariyyan |
Surely, your Lord has made a stream to flow beneath you. |
وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ |
wa huzz� ilayki bijidh`i alnnakhlati |
And shake towards you the trunk of the palm tree, |
تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا |
tus�qi� `alayki ru�aban janiyyan |
it will drop on you fresh ripe dates. |
The reciter should then raise the voice with the following holy verse and the statement following it:
(وَٱللَّهُ اخْرَجَكُمْ مِنْ بُطُونِ امَّهَاتِكُمْ |
wall�hu akhrajakum min bu��ni ummah�tikum |
�And Allah has brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers; |
لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْئًا |
l� ta`lam�na shay'an |
you did not know anything; |
وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلابْصَارَ وَٱلافْئِدَةَ |
wa ja`ala lakumu alssam`a wal-ab��ra wal-af'idata |
and He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts |
لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ.) |
la`allakum tashkur�na |
that you may give thanks.� |
كَذٰلِكَ ٱخْرُجْ ايُّهَا ٱلطَّلَقُ |
kadh�lika ukhruj ayyuh� al��alaqu |
So, come out O throes. |
اخْرُجْ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ |
ukhruj bi'idhni all�hi |
Come out, by the permission of Allah. |
For easy childbirth, Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have advised of writing the following prayer on a sheet of paper or a parchment:
اللَّهُمَّ فَارِجَ ٱلْهَمِّ |
all�humma f�rija alhammi |
O Allah, O reliever of agonies, |
وَكَاشِفَ ٱلْغَمِّ |
wa k�shifa alghammi |
dispeller of distresses, |
وَرَحْمٰنَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ وَرَحِيمَهُمَا |
wa ra�m�na aldduny� wal-�khirati wa ra��mahum� |
and beneficent and merciful of this world and the Hereafter, |
ٱرْحَمْ� |
ir�am� |
(please) have mercy upon� |
You may now mention the woman�s name and her mother�s:
رَحْمَةً تُغْنِيهَا بِهَا عَنْ رَحْمَةِ جَمِيعِ خَلْقِكَ |
ra�matan tughn�h� bih� `an ra�mati jam�`i khalqika |
with such mercy that makes her dispense with the mercy of all of Your creatures, |
تَفْرُجُ بِهَا كُرْبَتَهَا |
tafruju bih� kurbatah� |
relieve her anguish, |
وَتَكْشِفُ بِهَا غَمَّهَا |
wa takshifu bih� ghammah� |
repel her distress, |
وَتُيَسِّرُ وِلاَدَتَهَا |
wa tuyassiru wil�datah� |
and makes easy her childbirth. |
(وَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ |
wa qu�iya baynahum bil�aqqi wa hum l� yu�lam�na |
�And judgment shall be given between them with justice, |
وَقِيلَ ٱلْحَمْدُ للَِّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ) |
wa q�la al�amdu lill�hi rabbi al`�lam�na |
and it shall be said: All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.� |
(1) It is recommended to say this amulet, which the Holy Prophet (�) taught to Imam `Al� (`a) against fever:
اللَّهُمَّ ٱرْحَمْ جِلْدِيَ ٱلرَّقِيقَ |
all�humma ir�am jildiya alrraq�qa |
O Allah, (please) have mercy upon my soft skin |
وَعَظْمِيَ ٱلدَّقِيقَ |
wa `a�miya alddaq�qa |
and my fragile bone. |
وَاعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فَوْرَةِ ٱلْحَرِيقِ |
wa a`�dhu bika min fawrati al�ar�qi |
I pray Your protection against the outburst of fire. |
يَا امَّ مِلْدَمٍ |
y� umma mildamin |
O Ummu-Mildam (i.e. fever), |
إِنْ كُنْتِ آمَنْتِ بِٱللَّهِ |
in kunti �manti bill�hi |
if you believe in Allah, |
فَلاَ تَاكُلِي ٱللَّحْمَ |
fal� ta'kul� alla�ma |
then do not eat the flesh, |
وَلاَ تَشْرَبِي ٱلدَّمَ |
wa l� tashrab� alddama |
do not drink the blood, |
وَلاَ تَفُورِي مِنَ ٱلْفَمِ |
wa l� taf�r� min alfami |
do not boil in the mouth, |
وَٱنْتَقِلِي إِلىٰ مَنْ يَزْعَمُ انَّ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلٰهاً آخَرَ |
wantaqil� il� man yaz`amu anna ma`a all�hi il�han �khara |
and move to one who claims that there is another god with Allah, |
فَإِنِّي اشْهَدُ انْ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ |
fa'inn� ashhadu an l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
for I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, |
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ |
wa�dah� l� shar�ka lah� |
One and Only and having no associate, |
وَاشْهَدُ انَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ |
wa ashhadu anna mu�ammadan `abduh� wa ras�luh� |
and I bear witness that Mu�ammad is His servant and messenger. |
(2) A feverish person is recommended to say repeatedly in mornings and evenings the prayer known as du`�' al-n�r�a prayer that Lady F��imah al-Zahr�' (`a) taught to Salm�n. This prayer can be found in Maf�t�� al-Jin�n.
(3) The Holy Imams (`a) are reported to have used to treated themselves against fever with cold water. Successively, they used to wet their clothes by putting one on and leaving the other in water. When the dressed one dried out, they would put on the other wet one.
(4) Handwritten by Imam al-Ri�� (`a), a feverish person may write the following inscriptions on three sheets of paper as follows:
On the first sheet, the following may be written down:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
لاَ تَخَفْ إِنَّكَ انْتَ ٱلاعْلَىٰ |
l� takhaf innaka anta al-a`l� |
�Fear not! Surely, you shall be the uppermost.� |
On the second sheet, the following may be written down:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
لاَ تَخَفْ نَجَوْتَ مِنْ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ |
l� takhaf najawta min alqawmi al���lim�na |
�Fear not! You are secure from the unjust people.� |
On the third sheet, the following may be written down:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
الاَ لَهُ ٱلْخَلْقُ وَٱلامْرُ |
al� lah� alkhalqu wal-amru |
�Surely, His is the creation and the command. |
تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ |
tab�raka all�hu rabbu al`�lam�na |
Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.� |
On each of these sheets, S�rah al-Taw��d may be recited three times. After that, the feverish person may swallow the sheets in three days; each one on a day. If this is practiced, the fever will be healed, Allah willing.
(5) The feverish person my untie the buttons of his shirt, hang his head down to his chest, say the adh�n and the iq�mah statements, and recite S�rah al-F�ti�ah seven times. If this is practiced, the fever will be healed, Allah willing.
(6) The Holy Imams (`a) are reported to have instructed that the following prayer should be written on a parchment and hanged to the feverish person:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ بِعِزَّتِكَ |
all�humma inn� as'aluka bi`izzatika |
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your almightiness, |
وَقُدْرَتِكَ وَسُلْطَانِكَ |
wa qudratika wa sul��nika |
omnipotence, authority, |
وَمَا احَاطَ بِهِ عِلْمُكَ |
wa m� a���a bih� `ilmuka |
and whatever is comprehended by Your knowledge |
انْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
an tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
to bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad, |
وَانْ لاَ تُسَلِّطَ عَلَىٰ� شَيْئاً مِمَّا خَلَقْتَ بِسُوءٍ |
wa an l� tusall�a `al�� ibni� shay'an mimm� khalaqta bis�'in |
not to overload over [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so] any thing evil that You have created, |
وَٱرْحَمْ جِلْدَهُ ٱلرَّقِيقَ |
war�am jildah� alrraq�qa |
and to have mercy upon his soft skin |
وَعَظْمَهُ ٱلدَّقِيقَ |
wa `a�mah� alddaq�qa |
and his fragile bone |
مِنْ فَوْرَةِ ٱلْحَرِيقِ |
min fawrati al�ar�qi |
against the outbursts of fire. |
اخْرُجِي يَا امَّ مِلْدَمٍ |
ukhruj� y� umma mildamin |
Come out, O Ummu-Mildam (i.e. fever), |
يَا آكِلَةَ ٱللَّحْمِ |
y� �kilata alla�mi |
eater of flesh, |
وَشَارِبَةَ ٱلدَّمِ |
wa sh�ribata alddami |
and drinker of blood. |
حَرُّهَا وَبَرْدُهَا مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ |
�arruh� wa barduh� min jahannama |
Its heat and coldness are from Hell. |
إِنْ كُنْتِ آمَنْتِ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلاعْظَمِ |
in kunti �manti bill�hi al-a`�ami |
If you have believed in Allah the Greatest, |
انْ لاَ تَاكُلِي لِـ� لَحْماً |
an l� takul� li� la�man |
then do not eat any thing of the flesh of [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so], |
وَلاَ تَمُصِّي لَهُ دَماً |
wa l� tamu��� lah� daman |
do not suck any amount of his blood, |
وَلاَ تُنْهِكِي لَهُ عَظْماً |
wa l� tunhik� lah� `a�man |
do not weaken any part of his bones, |
وَلاَ تُثَوِّرِي عَلَيْهِ غَمّاً |
wa l� tuthawwir� `alayhi ghamman |
do not stir up distress over him, |
وَلاَ تُهَيِّجِي عَلَيْهِ صُدَاعاً |
wa l� tuhayyij� `alayhi �ud�`an |
do not excite headache over him, |
وَٱنْتَقِلِي عَنْ شَعْرِهِ وَبَشَرِهِ |
wantaqil� `an sha`rih� wa basharih� |
and move away from his hair, skin, |
وَلَحْمِهِ وَدَمِهِ |
wa la�mih� wa damih� |
flesh, and blood |
إِلىٰ مَنْ زَعَمَ انَّ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلٰهاً آخَرَ |
il� man za`ama anna ma`a all�hi il�han �khara |
to one who claims that there is another god with Allah |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ |
l� il�ha ill� huwa |
save Whom there is no god. |
سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ |
sub��nah� wa ta`�l� `amm� yushrik�na |
Glory be to Him and Exalted be Him against whatever they associate with Him. |
Then, it is recommended to write down the name of a non-Muslim or an enemy of Almighty Allah.
(7) On the right arm of the feverish person, it is advised to hang a sheet of paper (or the like) on which the following inscription has been written down:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
�In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
الْحَمْدُ للَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ |
al�amdu lill�hi rabbi al`�lam�na |
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. |
ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
alrra�m�ni alrra��mi |
The Beneficent, the Merciful. |
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ |
m�liki yawmi aldd�ni |
Master of the Day of Judgment. |
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ |
iyy�ka na`budu wa iyy�ka nasta`�nu |
Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help. |
إِهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَاطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ |
ihdin� al��ir��a al-mustaq�ma |
Keep us on the right path� |
صِرَاطَ ٱلَّذِينَ انْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ |
�ir��a alladh�na an`amta `alayhim |
the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favors. |
غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ |
ghayri almagh��bi `alayhim |
Not (the path) of those upon whom Your wrath is brought down, |
وَلا ٱلضَّالِّينَ |
wa l� al���ll�na |
nor of those who go astray.� |
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi wa bill�hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust). |
اعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلتَّامَّاتِ كُلِّهَا |
a`�dhu bikalim�ti all�hi altt�mm�ti kullih� |
I pray the protection of all the perfect words of Allah, |
ٱلَّتِي لاَ يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلاَ فَاجِرٌ |
allat� l� yuj�wizuhunna barrun wa l� f�jirun |
beyond which neither a pious nor an impious can go, |
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ وَذَرَا وَبَرَا |
min sharri m� khalaqa wa dhara'a wa bara'a |
against the evil of whatsoever He has created, fashioned, and made, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلْهَامَّةِ وَٱلسَّامَّةِ |
wa min sharri alh�mmati walss�mmati |
against the evil of the pestles, the poisonous, |
وَٱلْعَامَّةِ وَٱللاَّمَّةِ |
wal`�mmati wall�mmati |
the general (evils), and the ill sights, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ طَوَارِقِ ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ |
wa min sharri �aw�riqi allayli walnnah�ri |
against the evil of the comers at nights and in days, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ فُسَّاقِ ٱلْعَرَبِ وَٱلْعَجَمِ |
wa min sharri fuss�qi al`arabi wal`ajami |
against the evil of the wicked Arabs and non-Arabs, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ فَسَقَةِ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ |
wa min sharri fasaqati aljinni wal-insi |
against the evil of the wicked jinn and men, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ |
wa min sharri alshshay��ni wa shirkih� |
against the evil of Satan and his snares, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي شَرٍّ |
wa min sharri kulli dh� sharrin |
against the evil of all evil things, |
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ هُوَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا |
wa min sharri kulli d�bbatin huwa �khidhun bin��iyatih� |
and against the evil of every living creature that He holds it by its forelock. |
إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ |
inna rabb� `al� �ir��in mustaq�min |
Surely, my Lord is on the right path. |
رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا |
rabban� `alayka tawakkaln� |
�Our Lord, on You do we rely, |
وَإِلَيْكَ انَبْنَا |
wa ilayka anabn� |
to You do we turn, |
وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ |
wa ilayka alma��ru |
and to You is the eventual coming.� |
يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْداً وَسَلاَماً عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ |
y� n�ru k�n� bardan wa sal�man `al� ibr�h�ma |
�O fire, be a comfort and peace to Abraham. |
وَارَادُوٱ بِهِ كَيْداً فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ ٱلاخْسَرِينَ |
wa ar�d� bih� kaydan faja`aln�hum al-akhsar�na |
They desired a war on him, but We made them the greatest losers.� |
بَرْداً وَسَلاَماً عَلَىٰ � بْنِ� |
bardan wa sal�man `al�� ibni� |
Let it be comfort and peace to [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so (his mother�s name)]. |
رَبَّنَا لاَ تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا اوْ اخْطَانَا |
rabban� l� tu'�khidhn� in nas�n� aw akh�a'n� |
�Our Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. |
رَبَّنَا وَلاَ تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا |
rabban� wa l� ta�mil `alayn� i�ran |
Our Lord, do not lay on us a burden |
كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا |
kam� �amaltah� `al� alladh�na min qablin� |
as You did lay on those before us. |
رَبَّنَا وَلاَ تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لاَ طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ |
rabban� wa l� tu�ammiln� m� l� ��qata lan� bih� |
Our Lord, do not impose upon us that which we have not the strength to bear. |
وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا |
wa(a)`fu `ann� wa(a)ghfir lan� wa(a)r�amn� |
Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. |
انْتَ مَوْلاَنَا |
anta mawl�n� |
You are our Patron; |
فَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَافِرِينَ |
fan�urn� `al� alqawmi alk�fir�na |
so, help us against the unbelieving people.� |
حَسبِيَ ٱللَّهُ |
�asbiya all�hu |
�Sufficient to me is Allah. |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ |
l� il�ha ill� huwa |
There is no god save Him. |
فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلاًَ |
fattkhidhhu wak�lan |
So, take Him for a protector.� |
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَيِّ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَمُوتُ |
wa tawakkal `al� al�ayyi alladh� l� yam�tu |
�Rely on the Ever-living Who dies not |
وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِ |
wa sabbi� bi�amdih� |
and celebrate His praise. |
وَكَفىٰ بِهِ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِ خَبِيراً بَصِيراً |
wa kaf� bih� bidhun�bi `ib�dih� khab�ran ba��ran |
And Sufficient is He as being aware of the faults of His servants.� |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu |
There is no god but Allah, |
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ |
wa�dah� l� shar�ka lah� |
One and Only and having no associate. |
صَدَقَ وَعْدَهُ |
�adaqa wa`dah� |
He has truly fulfilled His promise, |
وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ |
wa na�ara `abdah� |
given victory to His servant, |
وَهَزَمَ ٱلاحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ |
wa hazama al-a�z�ba wa�dah� |
and defeated the allies alone. |
مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّهُ |
m� sh�'a all�hu |
Only what Allah wills shall come to pass. |
لاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِٱللَّهِ |
l� quwwata ill� bill�hi |
�There is no power save with Allah.� |
كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ َلاغْلِبَنَّ انَا وَرُسُلِي |
kataba all�hu la'aghlibanna ana wa rusul� |
�Allah has written down: I will most certainly prevail, I and My messengers. |
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ |
inna all�ha qawiyyun `az�zun |
Surely, Allah is Strong, Mighty.� |
إِنَّ حِزْبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْغَالِبُونَ |
inna �izba all�hi hum algh�lib�na |
�Surely, the party of Allah are they that shall be triumphant.� |
وَمَنْ يَعْتَصِمْ بِٱللَّهِ |
wa man ya`ta�im bill�hi |
�And whoever holds fast to Allah, |
فَقَدْ هُدِيَ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ |
faqad hudiya il� �ir��in mustaq�min |
he indeed is guided to the right path.� |
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ |
wa �all� all�hu `al� mu�ammadin |
May Allah bless Mu�ammad |
وَآلِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ |
wa �lih� al��ayyib�na al���hir�na |
and his pure and immaculate Household. |
(8) On three pieces of sugar, the following three phrases may be written down and the feverish person may eat them in the mornings of three days as the first meal, each piece a day:
The inscription on the first piece of sugar is this:
عَقَدْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ |
`aqadtu bi'idhni all�hi |
I will be tied up by the permission of Allah. |
The inscription on the second piece of sugar is this:
نَدَدْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ |
nadadtu bi'idhni all�hi |
I have fled by the permission of Allah. |
The inscription on the third piece of sugar is this:
سَكَنْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ |
sakantu bi'idhni all�hi |
I will be calmed down by the permission of Allah. |
It is reported that a man complained to Imam M�s� al-K��im (`a) about suffering from continuous tenesmus (i.e. a frequent, excessive, and painful desire to defecate). As treatment, the Imam (`a) taught the man to say the following prayer after the Night Prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ مَا كَانَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَمِنْكَ |
all�humma m� k�na min khayrin faminka |
O Allah, whatsoever good thing I have ever experienced has been from You |
لاَ حَمْدَ لِي فِيهِ |
l� �amda l� f�hi |
and I have no praiseworthy thing about it. |
وَمَا عَمِلْتُ مِنْ سُوءٍ فَقَدْ حَذَّرْتَنِيهِ |
wa m� `amiltu min s�'in faqad �adhdhartan�hi |
As for whatsoever evil I have done, You have already warned me against it; |
لاَ عُذْرَ لِي فِيهِ |
l� `udhra l� f�hi |
therefore, I am not excused in doing it at all. |
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اعُوذُ بِكَ انْ اتَّكِلَ عَلَىٰ مَا لاَ حَمْدَ لِي فِيهِ |
all�humma inn� a`�dhu bika an attakila `al� m� l� �amda l� f�hi |
O Allah, I thus pray Your protection against that I rely upon things that I have no praiseworthy interference it them |
اوْ آمَنَ مِمَّا لاَ عُذْرَ لِي فِيهِ |
aw �mana mimm� l� `udhra l� f�hi |
or that I feel secure against things that I am unexcused in committing them. |
Imam M�s� al-K��im (`a) is also reported to have advised the same previous prayer to be said after the Night Prayer by those who suffer from stomach gurgling. [A man said to him, �I suffer from stomach gurgling that never stops. Therefore, I feel embarrassed when people to whom I speak hear the sounds of such gurgling. So, please pray Allah to cure me of it.]
Imam al-��diq (`a), advising those who suffer from stomach gurgling, said, �Black cumin may be mixed with honey and then eaten.�
Y�nus has reported that whitish scales between the eyes affected him. He therefore complained about this disease to Imam al-��diq (`a) who, leading him to a treatment, said: You may pure yourself ceremonially, offer a two-unit prayer, and say this ( prayer):
يَا اللَّهُ يَا رَحْمَٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ |
y� all�hu y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu |
O Allah! O All-beneficent! O All-merciful! |
يَا سَمِيعَ ٱلدَّعَوَاتِ |
y� sam�`a aldda`aw�ti |
O Hearer of prayers! |
يَا مُعْطِيَ ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ |
y� mu`�iya alkhayr�ti |
O Donor of the good! |
اعْطِنِي خَيْرَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَخَيْرَ ٱلآخِرَةِ |
a`�in� khayra aldduny� wa khayra al-�khirati |
(Please) give me the good of this world and the good of the Hereafter, |
وَقِنِي شَرَّ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَشَرَّ ٱلآخِرَةِ |
wa qin� sharra aldduny� wa sharra al-�khirati |
protect me against the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter, |
وَاذْهِبْ عَنِّي مَا اجِدُ |
wa adhhib `ann� m� ajidu |
and remove from me what I am facing, |
فَقَدْ غَاظَنِي ٱلامْرُ وَاحْزَنَنِي |
faqad gh��an� al-amru wa a�zanan� |
for this matter has enraged and saddened me. |
Reporting the same narration, the author of `Uddat al-D�`� has reported Imam al-��diq (`a) as saying:
In the beginning of the last third of night, you may perform the ritual ablution (wu��') and offer the prayer you usually offer at this time. In the second prostration of the first two units of the prayer, you may say the following ( prayer) while you are in a state of prostration:
يَا عَلِيُّ يَا عَظِيمُ |
y� `aliyyu y� `a��mu |
O Most High! O All-great! |
يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ |
y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu |
O All-beneficent! O All-merciful! |
يَا سَامِعَ ٱلدَّعَوَاتِ |
y� s�mi`a aldda`aw�ti |
O Hearer of prayers! |
يَا مُعْطِيَ ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ |
y� mu`�iya alkhayr�ti |
O Donor of the good! |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
(Please) send blessings upon Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad, |
وَاعْطِنِي مِنْ خَيْرِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ |
wa a`�in� min khayri aldduny� wal-�khirati m� anta ahluh� |
give me from the good of this world and the Hereafter |
مَا انْتَ اهْلُهُ |
wa�rif `ann� min sharri aldduny� wal-�khirati m� anta ahluh� |
in a way that fits You, |
وَٱصْرِفْ عَنِّي مِنْ شَرِّ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ |
wa adhhib `ann� h�dh� alwaja`a |
repel from me the evil of this world and the Hereafter |
مَا انْتَ اهْلُهُ |
fa'innah� qad gh��an� wa a�zanan� |
in a way that fits You, |
وَاذْهِبْ عَنِّي هٰذَا ٱلْوَجَعَ |
y� `aliyyu y� `a��mu |
and remove from me this pain, |
فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ غَاظَنِي وَاحْزَنَنِي |
y� ra�m�nu y� ra��mu |
for it has enraged and saddened me. |
You may pray Almighty Allah so persistently.
Y�nus added, �Before I returned to al-K�fah, Almighty Allah has removed from me all the traces of that disease.�
For this disease as well as hemorrhoids, it is reported to write down S�rah Y�s�n with honey in a cup that must be then washed and drunk.
It is also reported to have the soil of Imam al-�usayn�s tomb after being kneaded with rainwater.
It is also reported to overlay the ailed organ with henna and hair-removing powder for those suffering from mange, furuncle, and herpes. For the same diseases, it is reported to recite, write down, and hang on the diseased person the following holy verses and statement:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
�In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
وَمَثَلُ كَلِمَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ |
wa mathalu kalimatin khab�thatin |
And the parable of an evil word |
كَشَجَرَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ |
kashajaratin khab�thatin |
is as an evil tree |
ٱجْتُثَّتْ مِنْ فَوْقِ ٱلارْضِ |
ijtuththat min fawqi al-ar�i |
pulled up from the earth's surface; |
مَا لَهَا مِنْ قَرَارٍ |
m� lah� min qar�rin |
it has no stability.� |
مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ |
minh� khalaqn�kum |
�From it, We created you |
وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ |
wa f�h� nu`�dukum |
and into it, We shall send you back, |
وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً اخْرَىٰ |
wa minh� nukhrijukum t�ratan ukhr� |
and from it, will We raise you a second time.� |
اللَّهُ اكْبَرُ وَانْتَ لاَ تُكَبَّرُ |
all�hu akbaru wa anta l� tukabbiru |
Allah is the Most Great, but you do not glorify His greatness. |
اللَّهُ يَبْقَىٰ وَانْتَ لاَ تَبْقَىٰ |
all�hu yabq� wa anta l� tabq� |
Allah shall remain forever, but you do not remain forever. |
وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ |
wall�hu `al� kulli shay'in qad�run |
Allah has power over all things. |
One of the companions of the Holy Imams (`a) is reported to have uncovered his private parts in a situation where it is improper to uncover one�s private parts; he was therefore affected by an ailment at that place. When he complained about this to Imam al-��diq (`a), he was taught to do this amulet:
Put your left hand on the ailed part and repeat the following prayer three times. If you do, you will be restored to health, Allah willing:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi wa bill�hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust). |
بَلىٰ مَنْ اسْلَمَ وَجْهَهُ لِلَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ |
bal� man aslama wajhah� lill�hi wa huwa mu�sinun |
�Yes! Whoever submits himself entirely to Allah and he is the doer of good (to others), |
فَلَهُ اجْرُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ |
falah� ajruh� `inda rabbih� |
he has his reward from his Lord, |
وَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ |
wa l� khawfun `alayhim wa l� hum ya�zan�na |
and there is no fear for him nor shall he grieve.� |
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ |
all�humma inn� aslamtu wajh� ilayka |
O Allah, I have submitted myself to You |
وَفَوَّضْتُ امْرِي إِلَيْكَ |
wa fawwa�tu amr� ilayka |
and entrusted my affair to You. |
لاَ مَلْجَا وَلاَ مَنْجَىٰ مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ |
l� malja'a wa l� manj� minka ill� ilayka |
There is neither shelter nor refuge against You except with You. |
Quoted from the book of �ibb al-A'immah (Medicine of the Imams), J�bir al-Ju`f� reported Imam Mu�ammad al-B�qir (`a) as saying:
I was present with al-�usayn ibn `Al� (`a) when a man from the descendants of Umayyah, yet he was loyalist to us, came to him and said, �O son of Allah�s Messenger, I could hardly come to you walking because of a pain from which I am suffering in my leg.�
The Imam (`a) asked, �How are you turned back from the amulet of al-�asan ibn `Al� (`a)?�
�What is that, son of Allah�s Messenger?� asked the man.
The Imam (`a) explained, �You may recite the first seven verses of S�rah al-Fat�.�
Afterwards, the man said, �As I had carried out this direction, I felt no pain at all.�
It is also reported that one who suffers from knee pains may say the following prayer after the ritual prayers:
يَا اجْوَدَ مَنْ اعْطَىٰ |
y� ajwada man a`�� |
O most magnanimous of all those who may donate! |
يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ سُئِلَ |
y� khayra man su'ila |
O best of all those who may be besought! |
وَيَا ارْحَمَ مَنِ ٱسْتُرْحِمَ |
wa y� ar�ama man istur�ima |
O most merciful of all those whose mercy is asked! |
إِرْحَمْ ضَعْفِي وَقِلَّةَ حِيلَتِي |
ir�am �a`f� wa qillata ��lat� |
(Please) have mercy upon my weakness and my confusion |
وَاعْفِنِي مِنْ وَجَعِي |
wa a`fin� min waja`� |
and release me from my pain. |
For those suffering from pains in the legs, it is reportedly recommended to recite the following holy verse seven times over the legs:
وَٱتْلُ مَا اوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ كِتَابِ رَبِّكَ |
watlu m� ��iya ilayka min kit�bi rabbika |
�And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. |
لاَ مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ |
l� mubaddila likalim�tih� |
There is none who can alter His words |
وَلَنْ تَجِدَ مِنْ دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا |
wa lan tajida min d�nih� multa�adan |
and you shall not find any refuge besides Him.� |
For those suffering from eye aches, many traditions have recommended saying the following prayer after the ritual obligatory prayers of dawn (sub�) and sunset (maghrib):
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْكَ |
all�humma inn� as'aluka bi�aqqi mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin `alayka |
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the right of Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad that is incumbent upon You |
انْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
an tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
to bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad |
وَانْ تَجْعَلَ ٱلنُّورَ فِي بَصَرِي |
wa an taj`ala alnn�ra f� ba�ar� |
and to place light in my sight, |
وَٱلْبَصِيرَةَ فِي دِينِي |
walba��rata f� d�n� |
insight in my faith, |
وَٱلْيَقِينَ فِي قَلْبِي |
walyaq�na f� qalb� |
certitude in my heart, |
وَٱلإِخْلاَصَ فِي عَمَلِي |
wal-ikhl��a f� `amal� |
sincerity in my deeds, |
وَٱلسَّلاَمَةَ فِي نَفْسِي |
walssal�mata f� nafs� |
safety in my self, |
وَٱلسَّعَةَ فِي رِزْقِي |
walssa`ata f� rizq� |
opulence in my sustenance, |
وَٱلشُّكْرَ لَكَ ابَداً مَا ابْقَيْتَنِي |
walshshukra laka abadan m� abqaytan� |
and thanks for You forever as long as You keep me alive. |
Al-Bizan�� reported Y�nus ibn �aby�n to have said: One day, we visited Imam al-��diq (`a) and found him tensely sore-eyed; therefore, we were depressed. The next morning, we visited him while he was completely healed. Surprised by this, we asked him, �May Allah accept us as ransoms for you! Have you treated your eyes with a certain medicine?� The Imam answered, �Yes, I have. I have treated them with the best of all medicines.� �What is that?� we asked. The Imam (`a) answered, �It is a amulet.� We therefore wrote down that amulet, which is as follows:
اعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ ٱللَّهِ |
a`�dhu bi`izzati all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s almightiness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِقُوَّةِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu biquwwati all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s all-powerfulness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِقُدْرَةِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu biqudrati all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s omnipotence, |
وَاعُوذُ بِنُورِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bin�ri all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s light, |
وَاعُوذُ بِعَظَمَةِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bi`a�amati all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s grandeur, |
وَاعُوذُ بِجَلاَلِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bijal�li all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s majesty, |
وَاعُوذُ بِجَمَالِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bijam�li all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s beauty, |
وَاعُوذُ بِبَهَاءِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bibah�'i all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s splendor, |
وَاعُوذُ بِجَمْعِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bijam`i all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s wholeness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِعَفْوِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bi`afwi all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s pardon, |
وَاعُوذُ بِغُفْرَانِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu bighufr�ni all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s forgiveness, |
وَاعُوذُ بِرَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ |
wa a`�dhu biras�li all�hi |
I pray the protection of Allah�s Messenger |
وَاعُوذُ بِٱلائِمَّةِ: |
wa a`�dhu bil-a'immati |
I pray the protection of the Imams: |
عَلِيَّ بْنِ ابِي طَالِبٍ |
`aliyyi ibni ab� ��libin |
`Al� ibn Ab�-��lib, |
وَٱلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ |
wal�asani ibni `aliyyin |
al-�asan ibn `Al�, |
وَٱلْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ |
wal�usayni ibni `aliyyin |
al-�usayn ibn `Al�, |
وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ |
wa `aliyyi ibni al�usayni |
`Al� ibn al-�usayn, |
وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ |
wa mu�ammadi ibni `aliyyin |
Mu�ammad ibn `Al�, |
وَجَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
wa ja`fari ibni mu�ammadin |
Ja`far ibn Mu�ammad, |
وَمُوسَىٰ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ |
wa m�s� ibni ja`farin |
M�s� ibn Ja`far, |
وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَىٰ |
wa `aliyyi ibni m�s� |
`Al� ibn M�s�, |
وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ |
wa mu�ammadi ibni `aliyyin |
Mu�ammad ibn `Al�, |
وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
wa `aliyyi ibni mu�ammadin |
`Al� ibn Mu�ammad, |
وَٱلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ |
wa al�asani ibni `aliyyin |
al-�asan ibn `Al�, |
وَٱلْحُجَّةِ بْنِ ٱلْحَسَنِ |
wal�ujjati ibni al�asani |
and al-�ujjah (the Argument-person) ibn al-�asan, |
عَلَىٰ مَا نَشَاءُ |
`al� m� nash�'u |
over whatever we wish |
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا اجِدُ |
min sharri m� ajidu |
against the evil of what I am feeling. |
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ ٱلْمُطِيعِينَ |
all�humma rabba almu��`�na |
O Allah! O Lord of the obedient! |
When we asked the Imam (`a) about the meaning of jam` all�h, he said, �It means the wholeness of Allah.�
It is also reported that one who suffers from eye pains may recite �yah al-Kurs� and believe in his inner self that the reciting of this holy verse will cure him of that pain.
Before reciting this holy verse, one suffering from eye pains is advised to put his hand on his eye and say the following:
اعِيذُ نُورَ بَصَرِي |
u`�dhu n�ra ba�ar� |
For the light of my sight, I pray |
بِنُورِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يُطْفَا |
bin�ri all�hi alladh� l� yu�fa'u |
the protection of Allah�s light that is inextinguishable. |
This will be useful.
For those who suffer from nyctalopia (i.e. reduction or loss of vision in dim light), they are recommended to write down �yah al-N�r several times (on a sheet of paper) in a cup, wash it, put it in a flask, and use it as eye ointment.
�yah al-N�r is the following:
اللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلارْضِ |
all�hu n�ru alssam�w�ti wa(a)l-ar�i |
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. |
مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ |
mathalu n�rih� kamishk�tin f�h� mi�b��un |
The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein a lamp is. |
ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ |
al-mi�b��u f� zuj�jatin |
The lamp is in a glass. |
ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ كَانَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ |
alzzuj�jatu ka'annah� kawkabun durriyyun |
The glass is as it were a shining star. |
يُوقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونِةٍ |
y�qadu min shajaratin mub�rakatin zayt�niatin |
(This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive |
لاَ شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلاَ غَرْبِيَّةٍ |
l� sharqiyyatin wa l� gharbiyyatin |
neither of the east nor of the west, |
يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ |
yak�du zaytuh� yu��'u |
whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) |
وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ |
wa law lam tamsas-hu n�run |
though no fire touched it. |
نُورٌ عَلَى نُورٍ |
n�run `al� n�rin |
Light upon light. |
يَهْدِي ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ |
yahd� all�hu lin�rih� man yash�'u |
Allah guides to His light whom He will. |
وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلامْثَالَ لِلْنَّاسِ |
wa ya�ribu all�hu al-amth�la lilnn�si |
And Allah speaks to mankind in allegories, |
وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ |
wa(a)ll�hu bikulli shay'in `al�mun |
for Allah is Knower of all things. |
It is also reported that whoever recites the Holy Qur'�n from copies of the Holy Qur'�n, will enjoy strong sight.
It is also reported that whoever repeats the following holy verse every day, his eyes will be saved from all optical troubles:
فَجَعَلْنَاهُ سَمِيعاً بَصِيراً |
faja`aln�hu sam�`an ba��ran |
�So, We make him hearing, seeing.� |
Al-Kaf`am� says: According to experiments, to seek the advocacy of Imam M�s� al-K��im (`a) is useful for cure of eye pains as well as the troubles of the other organs.
For those suffering from nosebleed, it is recommended to pour cold water on their heads and foreheads.
The Holy Prophet (�) is also reported to have said, �For each tree, leaf, and fruit of harmel (also harmala; a plant having aromatic seeds containing various alkaloids and used locally for medicines, oil, and dye),([2]) there is an angel entrusted with them until they are wrecked. Verily, in the root and branches of these trees is an amulet against distress and sorcery. In the grains of this plant, there is remedy of seventy-two maladies. So, treat yourselves with this plant and with olibanum.�
It is reported that when Imam al-Ri�� (`a) once passed by an epileptic person, he ordered a cup of water to be brought to him. The Imam (`a) then recited S�rah al-F�ti�ah, S�rah al-Falaq, and S�rah al-N�s on the cup and expectorated in it. He then ordered them to pour that water on the head and face of the epileptic person. Immediately, the man restored consciousness. The Imam (`a) then said to him, �This will never affect you again.�

NEXT SECTION
First: Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have advised of the following: For all ailments, you may say this prayer:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi wa bill�hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust). |
كَمْ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ لِلَّهِ |
kam min ni`matin lill�hi |
Too many are the graces of Allah |
فِي عِرْقٍ سَاكِنٍ وَغَيْرِ سَاكِنٍ |
f� `irqin s�kinin wa ghayri s�kinin |
in the calm and the stirred up veins |
عَلَىٰ عَبْدٍ شَاكِرٍ وَغَيْرِ شَاكِرٍ |
`al� `abdin sh�kirin wa ghayri sh�kirin |
to grateful and ungrateful servants (of Him). |
Upon accomplishing an obligatory prayer, you may grasp your beard with your right hand and repeat the following prayer three times:
اَللَّهُمَّ فَرِّجْ عَنِّي كُرْبَتِي |
all�humma farrij `ann� kurbat� |
O Allah, (please) relieve me from my agony, |
وَعَجِّلْ عَافِيَتِي |
wa `ajjil `�fiyat� |
hasten my healing, |
وَٱكْشِفْ ضُرِّي |
wakshif �urr� |
and remove my harm. |
Make sure that you associate this prayer with tears and weeping.
Second: Imam al-��diq (`a) is also reported to have advised: Put your hand on the ailed organ and say this:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ |
bismill�hi wa bill�hi |
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust). |
وَمُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ |
wa mu�ammadun ras�lu all�hi |
Mu�ammad is the messenger of Allah, |
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ |
�all� all�hu `alayhi wa �lih� |
may Allah bless him and his Household. |
وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِٱللَّهِ |
wa l� �awla wa l� quwwata ill� bill�hi |
There is neither might nor power except with Allah. |
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱمْسَحْ عنِّي مَا اجِدُ |
all�humma imsa� `ann� m� ajidu |
O Allah, (please) wipe out what I am suffering from. |
You may then rub your right hand over the ailed organ three times.
Third: Imam al-B�qir (`a) is reported to have said: When Imam `Al� (`a) was ailed, the Holy Prophet (�) came to him and advised him to say this prayer:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ تَعْجِيلَ عَافِيَتِكَ |
all�humma inn� as'aluka ta`j�la `�fiyatika |
O Allah, I beseech You for haste of Your healing, |
وَصَبْراً عَلَىٰ بَلِيَّتِكَ |
wa �abran `al� baliyyatika |
endurance of Your tribulation, |
وَخُرُوجاً إِلَىٰ رَحْمَتِكَ |
wa khur�jan il� ra�matika |
and exit to Your mercy. |
Fourth: Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have advised of the following:
You may put your hand on the ailed organ and repeat this prayer three times:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْالُكَ بِحَقِّ ٱلْقُرْآنِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ |
all�humma inn� as'aluka bi�aqqi alqur'�ni al`a��mi |
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the Great Qur'�n |
ٱلَّذِي نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوْحُ ٱلامِينُ |
alladh� nazala bih� alrr��u al-am�nu |
with which the Faithful Spirit has descended |
وَهُوَ عِنْدَكَ فِي امِّ ٱلْكِتَابِ عَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ |
wa huwa `indaka f� ummi alkit�bi `aliyyun �ak�mun |
and which is with You in the Mother of the Book is elevated and full of wisdom, |
انْ تَشْفِيَنِي بِشِفَائِكَ |
an tashfiyan� bishif�'ika |
to cure me with Your cure, |
وَتُدَاوِيَنِي بِدَوَائِكَ |
wa tud�wiyan� bidaw�'ika |
medicate me with Your medicine, |
وَتُعَافِيَنِي مِنْ بَلاَئِكَ |
wa tu`�fiyan� min bal�'ika |
heal me from Your tribulation, |
وَتُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
wa tu�alliya `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
and bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad, |
عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلاَم |
`alayhim(u) alssal�m |
peace be upon them. |
Fifth: Ab�-�amzah is reported to have said: One day, I felt pain in my knee. When I complained about it to Imam al-B�qir (`a), he advised me, saying: Upon accomplishment of a prayer, you may say this prayer:
يَا اجْوَدَ مَنْ اعْطَىٰ |
y� ajwada man a`�� |
O most magnanimous of all those who may donate, |
وَيَا خَيْرَ مَنْ سُئِلَ |
wa y� khayra man su'ila |
best of all those whom may be begged, |
وَيَا ارْحَمَ مَنِ ٱسْتُرْحِمَ |
wa y� ar�ama man istur�ima |
and most merciful of all those whose mercy is sought, |
ٱرْحَمْ ضَعْفِي وَقِلَّةَ حِيلَتِي |
ir�am �a`f� wa qillata ��lat� |
(please) have mercy upon my weakness and upon the failure of my stratagem |
وَٱعْفِنِي مِنْ وَجَعِي |
wa`fin� min waja`� |
and relieve me from my pain. |
Ab�-�amzah added: When I did, I was healed.
It is worth mentioning that I have referred in Section Three to other prayers against ailments and illnesses.
Third: Sayyid Ibn ��w�s, may Allah have mercy upon him, says that he tried this prayer personally:
On a parchment, you may write down this:
يَا مَنِ ٱسْمُهُ دَوَاءٌ |
y� man ismuh� daw�'un |
O He Whose Name is remedy |
وَذِكْرُهُ شِفَاءٌ |
wa dhikruh� shif�'un |
and Whose remembering is cure! |
يَا مَنْ يَجْعَلُ ٱلشِّفَاءَ فِيمَا يَشَاءُ مِنَ ٱلاشْيَاءِ |
y� man yaj`alu alshshif�'a f�m� yash�'u min al-ashy�'i |
O He Who places cure in whatever thing He wills, |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ |
�alli `al� mu�ammadin wa �li mu�ammadin |
(please) bless Mu�ammad and the Household of Mu�ammad |
وَٱجْعَلْ شِفَائِي مِنْ هٰذَا ٱلدَّاءِ فِي ٱسْمِكَ هٰذَا |
waj`al shif�'� min h�dh� aldd�'i f� ismika h�dh� |
and cause my cure of this malady to be in this Name of You: |
You may then write each of the following phrases ten times:
يَا اللَّهُ |
y� all�hu |
(1) O Allah! |
يَا رَبِّ |
y� rabbi |
(2) O my Lord! |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ |
y� ar�ama alrr��im�na |
(3) O most merciful of all those who show mercy! |
Fourth: To treat pimples, Imam al-��diq (`a) is reported to have said: When you feel the emergence of pimples, you may put your forefinger on it, revolve the area around it, and repeat this statement seven times:
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْحَلِيمُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ |
l� il�ha ill� all�hu al�al�mu alkar�mu |
There is no god save Allah the All-forbearing and All-generous. |
In the seventh time, you may bandage and tie it with the forefinger.
Fifth: Upon seeing wild boars, you may repeat the following words:
يَا رَؤُوفُ يَا رَحِيمُ |
y� ra'�fu y� ra��mu |
O All-clement! O All-merciful! |
يَا رَبِّ يَا سَيِّدِي |
y� rabbi y� sayyid� |
O my Lord! O my Master! |
Sixth: To treat backache, it is reported that you may put your hand on the ailed place and recite the following holy verse three times:
�وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ انْ تَمُوتَ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ كِتَاباً مُؤَجَّلاًَ |
wa m� k�na linafsin an tam�ta ill� bi'idhni all�hi kit�ban mu'ajjalan |
�And a soul will not die but with the permission of Allah. The term is fixed. |
وَمَنْ يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنْيَا نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا |
wa man yurid thaw�ba aldduny� nu'tih� minh� |
And whoever desires the reward of this world, We shall give him of it, |
وَمَنْ يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ ٱلآخِرَةِ نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا |
wa man yurid thaw�ba al-�khirati nu'tih� minh� |
and whoever desires the reward of the hereafter, We shall give him of it, |
وَسَنَجْزِي ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ.� |
wa sanajz� alshsh�kir�na |
and We will reward the grateful.� |
You may then repeat S�rah al-Qadr seven times. Once you do so, you will be healed, by the permission of Allah.
Seventh: To treat navel pains, it is reported that you may put your hand on the ailed place and repeat this holy verse three times. Once you do so, you will be healed, by the permission of Allah:
�وَإِنَّهُ لَكِتَابٌ عَزِيزٌ. |
wa innah� lakit�bun `az�zun |
�And most surely, it is a Mighty Book. |
لاَ يَاتِيهِ ٱلْبَاطِلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلاَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ |
l� ya't�hi alb��ilu min bayni yadayhi wa l� min khalfih� |
Falsehood shall not come to it from before it nor from behind it; |
تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ حَكِيمٍ حَمِيدٍ.� |
tanz�lun min �ak�min �am�din |
a revelation from the Wise, the Praised One.� |
Eighth: This evil-repelling prayer is reported from Imam al-Ri�� (`a) to treat all pains:
اعِيذُ نَفْسِي بِرَبِّ ٱلارْضِ وَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَاءِ |
u`�dhu nafs� birabbi al-ar�i wa rabbi alssam�'i |
I pray for myself the protection of the Lord of the earth and the Lord of the heavens. |
اعِيذُ نَفْسِي بِٱلَّذِي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ ٱسْمِهِ دَاءٌ |
u`�dhu nafs� billadh� l� ya�urru ma`a ismih� d�'un |
I pray for myself the protection of the One with Whose Name no malady can harm. |
اعِيذُ نَفْسِي بِٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي ٱسْمُهُ بَرَكَةٌ وَشِفَاءٌ |
u`�dhu nafs� bill�hi alladh� ismuh� barakatun wa shif�'un |
I pray for myself the protection of Allah Whose Name is blessing and cure. |
Ninth: To treat flank pains, it is reported that upon the accomplishment of a prayer, you may put your hand on the place of your prostration, rub your flank with your hand, and say these verses of the Holy Qur'�n:
�افَحَسِبْتُمْ انَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثًا |
afa�asibtum annam� khalaqn�kum `abath�n |
�What! Did you then think that We had created you in vain |
وَانَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لاَ تُرْجَعُونَ. |
wa annakum ilayn� l� turja`�na |
and that you shall not be returned to Us? |
فَتَعَالَىٰ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ |
fata`�l� all�hu almaliku al�aqqu |
So, exalted be Allah, the True King; |
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ |
l� il�ha ill� huwa |
no god is there but He, |
رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِ. |
rabbu al`arshi alkar�mi |
the Lord of the honorable dominion. |
وَمَنْ يَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلٰهًا آخَرَ |
wa man yad`u ma`a all�hi il�h�n �khara |
And whoever invokes with Allah another god-- |
لاَ بُرْهَانَ لَهُ بِهِ |
l� burh�na lah� bih� |
he has no proof of this-- |
فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ |
fa'innam� �is�buh� `inda rabbih� |
his reckoning is only with his Lord. |
إِنَّهُ لاَ يُفْلِحُ ٱلْكَافِرُونَ. |
innahu l� yufli�u alk�fir�na |
Surely, the unbelievers shall not be successful. |
وَقُلْ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ |
wa qul rabbi ighfir wa(i)r�am |
And say: O my Lord! Forgive and have mercy, |
وَانْتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ.� |
wa anta khayru alrr��im�na |
and You are the best of the Merciful ones.� |
Tenth: To treat stomach and colon troubles, you may recite this holy verse:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ. |
bismill�hi alrra�m�n alrra��mi |
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
�وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذْ ذَهَبَ مُغَاضِباً |
wa dh� alnn�ni idh dhahaba mugh��iban |
And (mention) Dhu'n-N�n (Jonah), when he went off in anger |
فَظَنَّ انْ لَنْ نَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ |
fa�anna an lan naqdira `alayhi |
and deemed that We would not suppress his sustenance. |
فَنَادَىٰ فِي ٱلظُّلُمَاتِ |
fan�d� f� al��ulum�ti |
But he cried out in the darkness, |
انْ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ انْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ |
an l� il�ha ill� anta sub��naka |
�There is no god save You. Be You Glorified! |
إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ. |
inn� kuntu min al���lim�na |
Lo! I have been a wrongdoer.� |
فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلغَمِّ |
fastajabn� lah� wa najjayn�hu min alghammi |
Then we heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. |
وَكَذٰلِكَ نُنْجِي ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ.� |
wa kadh�lika nunj� almu'min�na |
Thus do we save the believers. |
You may then repeat S�rah al-F�ti�ah seven times.
This is a proved treatment.
