t
The following prayers and recommended devotional acts have been quoted from Shaykh al-Tusi’s famous book of Misbah al-Mutahajjid and other reference books.
t
After you say the Taslim statement—the closing part of the ritual prayers—and accomplish your prayer, repeat the Takbir statement (i.e. allahu akbar; Allah is the Greatest) three times while raising your hands to the level of your ears and then say:
la ilaha illa allahu
There is no god save Allah;
ilahan wahidan
One and Only God;
wa nahnu lahu muslimuna
and we are submissive to Him.
la ilaha illa allahu
There is no god save Allah
wa la na`budu illa iyyahu
and we worship none save Him,
mukhlisina lahu alddina
making our devotion sincere as in His sight,
wa law kariha almushrikuna
even though the polytheists may detest it.
la ilaha illa allahu
There is no god save Allah;
rabbuna wa rabbu aba'ina al-awwalina
(He is) Our Lord and the Lord of our fathers of old.
la ilaha illa allahu
There is no god save Allah;
wahdahu wahdahu wahdahu
Alone, alone, alone.
anjaza wa`dahu
He has truly fulfilled His promise,
wa nasara `abdahu
granted His servant victory,
wa a`azza jundahu
made powerful His soldiers,
wa hazama al-ahzaba wahdahu
and defeated the parties alone.
falahu almulku wa lahu alhamdu
So, sovereignty be His and praise be His.
yuhyi wa yumitu
He grants life and causes (others) to die,
wa yumitu wa yuhyi
and (then) causes to die and raises from the dead;
wa huwa hayyun la yamutu
while He is eternally ever-living and He never dies.
biyadihi alkhayru
All goodness is at His Hand,
wa huwa `ala kulli shay'in qadirun
and He has power over all things.
t
Then, say the following:I seek forgiveness of Allah; there is no god save Him,
allahumma inni as'aluka min kulli khayrin ahata bihi `ilmuka
O Allah, I beseech You to grant me part of all good things that are encompassed by Your knowledge
wa a`udhu bika min khizyi alddunya wa `adhabi alakhirati
and I seek Your protection against the disgrace of this world and the chastisement in the Next World.
wa a`udhu biwajhika alkarimi
I also seek protection of Your Noble Face,
wa `izzatika allati la turamu
Your invulnerable omnipotence,
walhamdu lillahi alladhi lam yattakhidh waladan
All praise be to Allah Who has not taken to Himself a son,
wa lam yakun lahu sharikun fi almulki
nor has He had any partner in sovereignty,
wa lam yakun lahu waliyyun mina aldhdhulli
nor does He need any to protect Him from humiliation.
wa kabbirhu takbiran
And magnify Him with all magnificence.
t
Then, utter the Tasbih al-Zahra' litany (which is discussed in the attached book of al-Baqiyat al-Salihat).
t
Before you move from your prayer-place, repeat the following litany ten times:
ash-hadu an la ilaha illa allahu
I bear witness that there is no god save Allah;
wahdahu la sharika lahu
(He is) One and Only; and there is no partner with Him;
ilahan wahidan
a Single God;
ahadan fardan samadan
One, Unique, and eternally Besought of all.
lam yattakhidh sahibatan wa la waladan
He has taken to Himself neither a wife nor a son.
t
It is narrated that a great reward is obtained by saying this litany, especially after the Dawn (Fajr) and Evening (`Isha') obligatory Prayers and at sunrise and sunset.
t
Then, say the following:
subhana allahi kullama sabbaha allaha shay'un
All Glory be to Allah whenever Allah is glorified by things,
wa kama yuhibbu allahu an yusabbaha
as exactly as Allah likes to be glorified,
wa kama huwa ahluhu
as exactly as He is worthy of glorification,
allahumma inni as'aluka an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
O Allah, I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad
wa as'aluka min khayri ma arju
and I beseech You to grant me the best of what I hope
wa khayri ma la arju
and the best of what I have not included with my hopes.
wa a`udhu bika min sharri ma ahdharu
I also beseech You to protect me against the evil of what I anticipate
wa min sharri ma la ahdharu
and the evils of what I do not anticipate.
Then, recite the following Qur'anic texts:
(1) Surah al-Hamd (i.e. al-Fatihah No. 1), (2) ªyah al-Kursi (2:255-257), (3) Verses of Bearing Witness (ªyat al-Shahadah; 3:18-19), (4) Verses of Kingdom (ªyah al-Mulk; 3:26-27), and (5) Verses of Subservience (ªyah al-Sakharah 7:54-56).
Then, repeat the following verses (Surah al-Saffat 37:180-183) three times:
as'aluka an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
I beseech You to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
wa an tu`tiqa raqabati mina alnnari
to deliver me from the Fire,
wa an tukhrijani mina alddunya saliman
to cause me leave this world free (from liabilities),
wa tudkhilani aljannata aminan
to allow me to Paradise with security,
wa an taj`ala du`a'i awwalahu falahan
and to make the beginning of my prayer successful,
wa awsatahu najahan
the middle of it a gain,
wa akhirahu salahan
and the end of it a prosperity.
innaka anta `allamu alghuyubi
Verily, You are the Knower of all unseen things.
t
According to al-Sahifah al-`Alawiyyah (a collection of Imam `Ali’s supplications), the following supplicatory prayer is advisably said after the obligatory prayers:
ya man la yashghaluhu sam`un `an sam`in
O He Who is not distracted by a sound from hearing another sound!
wa ya man la yughallituhu alssa'iluna
O He Who is not confused by the beseechers!
wa ya man la yubrimuhu ilhahu almulihhina
O He Who is not annoyed by the insistence of those who entreat Him persistently!
adhiqni barda `afwika
(Please do) Make me taste the nice flavor of Your pardon
wa halawata rahmatika wa maghfiratika
and the sweetness of Your mercy and forgiveness.
t
You may also say the following supplicatory prayer:
ilahi hadhihi salati sallaytuha
O Allah, This is my prayer that I have just offered
la lihajatin minka ilayha
on account of neither a need that You may have for it
wa la raghbatin minka fiha
nor a desire that You may have for it;
illa ta`ziman wa ta`atan
rather, it is only glorification of You, obedience to You,
wa ijabatan laka ila ma amartani bihi
and response to You to carry out what You have ordered me to do.
ilahi in kana fiha khalalun aw naqsun
O my God: If there is a defect or a deficiency in my prayer,
min ruku`iha aw sujudiha
whether in the genuflection or the prostration;
fala tu´akhidhni
then, (please) do not reproach me for it;
wa tafaddal `alayya bilqabuli wal-ghufrani
rather, confer upon me with Your acceptance (of it) and forgiveness (of me).
t
After accomplishment of the ritual prayers, you may also say the following supplicatory prayer, which the Holy Prophet (s) taught to Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu'minin (`a) for developing memory:
Glory be to Him Who does not inflict on the inhabitants of the earth various sorts of torture!
subhana alrra'ufi alrrahimi
Glory be to the Affectionate, the Merciful!
O Allah, (please) fill my heart with illumination, discernment,
wa fahman wa `ilman
(faculty of) understanding, and knowledge.
innaka `ala kulli shay'in qadirun
Verily, You have power over all things.
t
Al-Kaf`ami, in his book of al-Misbah, cites that it is advisable to repeat the following supplicatory prayer three times after obligatory prayers:
u`idhu nafsi wa dini
I seek for myself, my religion,
wa ahli wa mali
my family members, my possessions,
wa waladi wa ikhwani fi dini
my descendants, my brethren-in-faith,
wa ma razaqani rabbi wa khawatima `amali
all sustenance that my Lord has provided to me as sustenance, the results of my deeds,
wa man ya`nini amruhu
and whomever I may concern about,
billahi alwahidi
(I seek for all these) the protection of Allah, the Single,
al-ahadi alssamadi
the One, and the eternally Besought of all
alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad
Who begets not, nor is He begotten;
wa lam yakun lahu kufwan ahadun
and the like of Whom there is none.
wa birabbi alfalaqi
And [I seek the protection of] the Lord of the dawn
min sharri ma khalaqa
from the evil of what He has created,
wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqaba
the evil of the utterly dark night when it comes,
wa min sharri alnnaffathati fi al`uqadi
the evil of those who blow on knots,
wa min sharri hasidin idha hasada
and the evil of the envious when he envies.
wa birabbi alnnasi
And [I seek the protection of] the Lord of men,
maliki alnnasi
the King of men,
ilahi alnnasi
the God of men,
min sharri alwaswasi alkhannasi
from the evil of the whisperings of the slinking (Satan),
alladhi yuwaswisu fi suduri alnnasi
who whispers into the hearts of men
mina aljinnati walnnasi
from among the jinn and the men.
t
It is narrated in an inscription handwritten by Shaykh al-Shahid that the Holy Prophet (s) said: Whoever desires that Almighty Allah will not show him his evildoings (that he did in this world) on the Resurrection Day and will not open the record of his evildoings, should say the following supplicatory prayer after each obligatory prayer:
innaka tahdi man tasha'u ila siratin mustaqimin
Verily, You guide him whom You wish to a straight path.
Again, repeat the following invocation ten times:
allahumma ahyini `ala ma ahiyayta `alayhi `aliyya bna abi talibin
O Allah, (please) make me live carrying the conducts on which You made `Ali the son of Abu-Talib live
wa amitni `ala ma mata `alayhi `aliyyu bnu abi talibin `alayhi alssalamu
and make me die on the principles for which `Ali the son of Abu-Talib—peace be upon him—died.
Also, repeat each of the following statements one hundred times:
astaghfiru allaha wa atubu ilayhi
(1) I pray the forgiveness of Allah and I repent before Him.
as'alu allaha al`afiyata
(2) I beseech Allah for good health.
astajiru billahi mina alnnari
(3) I seek Allah’s protection against Hellfire.
wa as'aluhu aljannata
(4) I ask Him for Paradise.
as'alu allaha alhura al`ina
(5) I ask Allah for the Paradisiacal Women.
(10) Only that which Allah wills shall come to pass and there is neither might nor power save with Allah, the All-high and All-great.
hajaztu al-a`adiya `anni bibadi`i alssamawati wal-ardi
I am restraining the enemies against me through the Originator of the heavens and the earth;
inna ja`alna min bayni aydihim saddan
“And We have set a bar before them
wa min khalfihim saddan
and a bar behind them,
fa-aghshaynahum fahum la yubsiruna
and (thus) have covered them so that they see not.”
This supplication, which is reported from Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu'minin (`a) at the Night of Mabit,([1]) is advisably said each morning and evening.
In Tahdhib al-Ahkam (by Shaykh al-Tusi), it is reported that whoever repeats the following litany ten times after the Dawn Prayers, Almighty Allah will save him from blindness, insanity, leprosy, poverty, and (house) demolition or dotage:
subhana allahi al`azimi wa bihamdihi
All glory be to Allah, the All-great and in praise of Him;
and there is neither might nor power save with Allah, the All-high and All-great.
Shaykh al-Kulayni reports Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (`a) as saying: Whoever repeats the following litany seven times after the Dawn and Sunset Prayers, Almighty Allah will saved him from seventy kinds of misfortune the least of which are flatulence, leprosy, and insanity; and his name will be erased from the list of the condemned ones, if it was listed there, and will be added to the list of the happy ones:
bismi allahi alrrahmani alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah the All-compassionate, the All-merciful;
there is neither might nor power save with Allah, the All-high and All-great.
Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (`a) is also reported to have said that one who desires to enjoy both the worldly life and the Next World, and one who has eye ache, should utter the following supplicatory prayer after the Dawn and Sunset Prayers:
allahumma inni as'aluka bihaqqi muhammadin wa ali muhammadin `alayka
O Allah, I do beseech You, in the name of the right of Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad that is incumbent upon You
salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad
waj`al alnnura fi basari
and to make light in my sight,
walbasirata fi dini
discerning in my religion,
wal-yaqina fi qalbi
conviction in my heart,
wal-ikhlasa fi `amali
sincerity in my deeds,
walssalamata fi nafsi
safety in my self,
walssa`ata fi rizqi
richness in my sustenance,
walshshukra laka abadan ma abqaytani
and perpetual thankfulness for You as long as you keep me alive.
In `Uddat al-Da`i, Shaykh Ibn Fahad reports Imam `Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (`a) to have said: Whoever says the following statement after the Dawn Prayer, will have all his requests made easy-to-gain for him and will be saved by Almighty Allah against every thing that aggrieves him:
bismillahi
In the Name of Allah.
wa salla allahu `ala muhammadin wa alihi
May Allah bless Muhammad and his Household.
wa ufawwidu amri ila allahi
“I confide my cause unto Allah.
inna allaha basirun bil`ibadi
Surely, Allah is Seer of His slaves.
fawaqahu allahu sayyi'ati ma makaru
So, Allah warded off from him the evils which they plotted.”
la ilaha illa anta subhanaka
“There is no god save You. Be You Glorified!
inni kuntu mina alzzalimina
Lo! I have been a wrongdoer.
fastajabna lahu wa najjaynahu mina alghammi
Then, We heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish.
wa kadhalika nunji almu'minina
Thus do We save the believers.”
hasbuna allahu wa ni`ma alwakilu
“Allah is Sufficient for us! Most Excellent is He in Whom we trust.
fanqalabu bini`matin mina allahi wa fadlin
So, they returned with grace and favor from Allah,
lam yamsas-hum su'un
and no harm touched them.”
ma sha'a allahu
Only that which Allah wills shall come to pass.
la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahi
There is neither strength nor power save with Allah.
Only that which Allah, but not people, wills shall come to pass.
ma sha'a allahu wa in kariha alnnasu
Only that which Allah wills shall come to pass even if people detest it.
hasbiya alrrabbu mina almarbubina
Sufficient for me is the Lord against the lorded.
hasbiya alkhaliqu mina almakhluqina
Sufficient for me is the Creator against the creatures.

Sufficient for me is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
hasbi man huwa hasbi
Sufficient for me is He Who is sufficient for me.
hasbi man lam yazal hasbi
Sufficient for me is He Who has been always sufficient for me.
hasbi man kana mudh kuntu lam yazal hasbi
Sufficient for me is He Who had been since eternity and still sufficient for me.
hasbiya allahu la ilaha illa huwa
“Allah suffices me. There is no god save Him.
`alayhi tawakkaltu
In Him have I put my trust,
wa huwa rabbu al`arshi al`azimi
and He is the Lord of the Tremendous Throne.”
Our master scholar, Shaykh al-Nuri, in his book of Dar al-Salam, has recorded on the authority of his mentor Fath `Ali al-Sultanabadi that Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq al-`Iraqi had lived in harsh poverty for a long time without finding any solution for his state until he saw, in dream, that he was in a valley where there was an enormous tent with a dome over it. As he asked about the lord of that tent, he was answered that it was owned by Imam al-Mahdi, the Awaited—the protecting shelter and the relief of the deprived ones—may Allah hasten his reappearance. He therefore hurried towards that tent and complained about his poverty, asking the Imam (`a) to teach him a supplication that would relieve him from his grief and save him from his misfortunes. The Imam, having heard his complaint, instructed him to visit the tent of one of his offspring. He therefore left the Imam’s tent and headed for the tent to which he was guided. When he reached there, he saw Sayyid Muhammad al-Sultanabadi sitting in his prayer-place while he was engaged in uttering supplications and litanies. He greeted him and told him about his story with the Imam. The Sayyid therefore taught him a supplication that would relieve him from poverty and bring him good sustenance.
When the man woke up, he found that he had learnt that supplication by heart; therefore, he hurried to the house of the Sayyid and found him in the same state that he had seen in the dream. As if the Sayyid had already known about the dream, he welcomed the man and smiled in his face. The man hence asked the Sayyid about that supplication and the Sayyid answered him. Immediately after saying the supplication persistently, the man became so wealthy that fortune covered him from all sides.
Hajj Fath `Ali al-Sultanabadi used to praise the Sayyid so laudably. For some time, he studied under him.
The following three matters were taught by the Sayyid to that man:
(1) He taught him that he, after the Dawn Prayers, should put his hand on his chest and repeat seventy times the phrase of:
Ya fattahu
O Greatest Judge
(2) He taught him to regularly say the following supplicatory prayer that, as is recorded in al-Kafi, the Holy Prophet (s) taught to one of his companions who had been afflicted by disease and poverty. Soon after that, the man recovered health and got rid of poverty. The supplication is this:
la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahi
There is neither might nor power except with Allah.
tawakkaltu `ala alhayyi alladhi la yamutu
I put my trust in the Ever-living (Lord) Who never dies.
walhamdu lillahi alladhi lam yattakhidh waladan
All praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a wife or a son
wa lam yakun lahu sharikun fi almulki
and Who has not have a partner in the kingdom,
wa lam yakun lahu waliyyun min aldhdhulli
and Who has not have a helper to save Him from disgrace;
wa kabbirhu takbiran
and magnify Him with all magnificence.
(3) He taught him to say the abovementioned supplication, which is recorded by Ibn Fahad al-Hilli in `Uddat al-Da`i, after the Dawn Prayers.
It is thus necessary to constantly say these supplications since great rewards will be given to those who do not neglect so.
Thanksgiving Prostration (Sajdat al-Shukr)
It is highly recommended to do the Thanksgiving Prostration after the accomplishment of obligatory prayers. Too many are the supplications and litanies that may be said during the Thanksgiving Prostration. In this connection, Imam `Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (`a) is reported to have said that one may repeat one hundred times one of the following words during the Thanksgiving Prostrations:
shukran shukran
Thanks, thanks.
`afwan `afwan
Pardon! Pardon!
Imam al-Rida (`a) is also reported to have said: The least to be said while prostrating is to repeat the following three times:
The Post-Afternoon Prayer Litanies.Subsequent to the Afternoon (`Asr) Prayer, say the following supplicatory prayer, as is quoted from Misbah al-Mutahajjid:
allahumma inni as'aluka alyusra ba`da al`usri
O Allah, I surely beseech You for easiness after difficulty,
walfaraja ba`da alkarbi
relief after misfortune,
walrrakha'a ba`da alshshiddati
and comfort after hardship.
allahumma ma bina min ni`matin faminka
O Allah, You are certainly the source of each and every favor that covers us.
la ilaha illa anta
There is no god save You.
astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka
I pray Your forgiveness and repent before You.
Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (`a) is reported as saying: Anyone who implores Almighty Allah’s forgiveness (i.e. astaghfirullaha) seventy times after the `Asr Prayer will have seven hundred of his sins forgiven.
Imam Muhammad al-Taqi (al-Jawad) (`a) is also reported as saying: Anyone who recites Surah al-Qadr (No. 97) ten times after the `Asr Prayer will be granted the reward of the deeds of all creatures on that day.
It is also recommended to say Du`a' al-`Asharat every morning and evening. Yet, the best time for this supplication is the time after the `Asr Prayers on Fridays.
O you who believe! Call for Divine blessings on him and salute him with a becoming salutation.”
allahumma salli `ala muhammadin alnnabiyyi
O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad the Prophet,
wa `ala dhurriyyatihi
upon his offspring,
wa `ala ahli baytihi
and upon his Household.
Then, repeat the following litany seven times:
bismi allahi alrrahmani alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
fa'innahu la yaghfiru aldhdhunuba kullaha jami`an illa anta
for none can forgive all sins save You.
You may then offer the Sunset supererogatory (Nafilah) prayer, which consists of four units of prayer, each two separated by a Taslim statement. You should not utter any word between the two parts of the prayer.
According to the Shaykh, it has been narrated that Surah al-Kafirun (No. 109) should be recited in the first unit and Surah al-Tawhid in the second. In the third and fourth units, it is optional to recite any other Surah desired.
It has been also narrated that Imam `Ali al-Naqi (al-Hadi) (`a) used to recite, in the third unit (Rak`ah) of this prayer, Surah al-Fatihah and the first six verses (ªyahs) of Surah al-Hadid, and in the fourth unit, Surah al-Fatihah and the last four verses of Surah al-Hashr.
It is also recommended to repeat the following supplicatory prayer seven times in the last prostration (sajdah) of all supererogatory prayers each night, especially at Friday nights (i.e. the night before Friday):
wa jiwari nabiyyika muhammadin `alayhi wa alihi alssalamu
and the vicinity of Your Prophet Muhammad—peace be upon him and his Household.
allahumma ma bina min ni`matin faminka
O Allah, You are certainly the source of each and every favor that covers us.
la ilaha illa anta
There is no god save You.
astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka
I pray Your forgiveness and I repent before You.
The Ghufaylah Prayer
You may then offer the Ghufaylah Prayer in the period between the Sunset (maghrib) and the Evening (`isha') Prayers. This prayer consists of two units in the first of which you should recite, after Surah al-Fatihah, the following verses (Surah al-Anbiya' 21:87-88):
wa dha alnnuni idh dhahaba mughadiban
And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger
fazanna an lan naqdira `alayhi
and deemed that We would not suppress his sustenance.
fanada fi alzzulumati
But he cried out in the darkness,
an la ilaha illa anta subhanaka
“There is no god save You. Be You Glorified!
inni kuntu min alzzalimina
Lo! I have been a wrongdoer.”
fastajabna lahu wa najjaynahu min alghammi
Then we heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish.
wa kadhalika nunji almu'minina
Thus do we save the believers.
In the second unit, you should recite, after Surah al-Fatihah, the following verse (6:59):
wa `indahu mafatihu alghaybi
And with Him are the keys of the Invisible.
la ya`lamuha illa huwa
None but He knows them.
wa ya`lamu ma fi albarri walbahri
And He knows what is in the land and the sea.
Not a leaf falls but He knows it,
wa la habbatin fi zulumati al-ardi
not a grain amid the darkness of the earth,
wa la ratbin wa la yabisin
naught of wet or dry
illa fi kitabin mubinin
but (it is noted) in a clear record.
After that, you should raise your both hands for Qunut, saying:
allahumma inni as'aluka bimafatihi alghaybi
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the Keys of the Invisible (world)
allati la ya`lamuha illa anta
that none knows save You;
an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa alihi…
(please) send blessings to Muhammad and his Household and...
You may then mention your needs.
Then, say the following:
allahumma anta waliyyu ni`mati
O Allah, You are the source of the graces that I have,
walqadiru `ala talibati
You have the power to respond to my request,
ta`lamu hajati
and You know my needs;
fa-as'aluka bihaqqi muhammadin wa alihi
I therefore beseech You in the name of Muhammad and his Household,
`alayhi wa `alayhimu alssalamu
peace be upon him and them,
lamma qadaytaha li
to grant me my needs.
You may then pray to Him for your personal needs, for it has been narrated that any one who offers this prayer and supplicates Almighty Allah will have his requests granted.
Please, do not fatigue me by seeking that which You have not decided for me to take,
fa'innaka ghaniyyun `an `adhabi
because You are certainly in no need for tormenting me
wa ana faqirun ila rahmatika
while I am in full need for Your mercy.
fasalli `ala muhammadin wa alihi
(Please) Send blessings upon Muhammad and his Household
wa jud `ala `abdika bifadlika
and confer liberally upon me, Your slave, out of Your graciousness.
innaka dhu fadlin `azimin
You are surely the Lord of great favor.
It is worth mentioning that the abovementioned supplication is one of the supplications recommended to seeking sustenance.
The Wutayrah Prayer
Upon accomplishment of the Evening Prayer, it is recommended to recite Surah al-Qadr (No. 97) seven times and offer the Wutayrah supererogatory prayer, which consists of two units and should be offered in the position of sitting by reciting one hundred verses of the Holy Qur'an in both the units. Hence, it is recommended to recite Surah al-Waqi`ah (No. 56) in the first unit and Surah al-Tawhid in the second.
